Megan
I gazed at my reflection in the mirror, the heavy black wedding gown feeling like a weight on my shoulders. The elaborate dress was beautiful, but it was so cumbersome that I felt as though I was being suffocated by its layers.
With a sigh of relief, I decided to change into something more comfortable. I walked over to the closet, hoping to find an outfit that would allow me to breathe a little easier.
As I opened the closet door, I was stunned by the sight before me. It was filled with an assortment of shoes, dresses, bags, and jewelry, all meticulously arranged.
My eyes widened at the unexpected abundance. It was overwhelming, and I felt a pang of anxiety as I tried to decide what to wear.
Eventually, I chose a simple, casual dress that seemed light and easy compared to the heavy wedding gown.
Carefully, I undressed, folding the gown with as much care as I could manage. I was so focused on my task that I didn’t hear the faint noise behind me at first.
When I finally did, my heart skipped a beat. I turned around quickly, only to see a man standing in the room, his eyes wide with surprise.
I was caught off guard, and I suddenly realized that I was completely naked!
Before I could react, the man’s hand shot out and covered my mouth. I was terrified. My eyes were wide with fear as he spoke in a low, urgent tone. “I’ll take my hand off if you promise not to scream.”
Tears welled up in my eyes as I nodded, my fear overwhelming any sense of dignity. The man removed his hand slowly, and I scrambled to grab a nearby towel.
I wrapped it around myself as quickly as I could, trying to cover my exposed body. I knelt on the floor, my eyes squeezed shut as I whispered a desperate prayer.
“Please, Lord, don’t let there be any ghosts or demons. I promise I’ll pray for Alpha Jake’s soul and be a good widow for him. Just don’t show me anything frightening.”
The man stood there, watching me with a look of both surprise and amusement. When I finally opened my eyes, I was shocked to see him still standing there. I took a deep breath and asked, my voice trembling, “A-Are you a ghost or a demon?”
I tried to calm myself, making sure the towel was securely wrapped around me before cautiously walking toward him. He was much taller than I was, so I had to tiptoe slightly to pinch both of his cheeks. He looked even more surprised at my actions. I was still trying to make sense of everything when I exclaimed, “Oh, you’re not a ghost or a demon!”
The man’s expression softened, and he gently held my chin, looking into my eyes. “I’m very much alive,” he said calmly. “I’m not a ghost or a demon. I’m a werewolf, like Beta Lucas and the other.”
My heart raced as I absorbed his words. I swallowed hard, feeling a blush spread across my cheeks as I looked down. “I’m sorry if I scared you,” he said softly.
I managed to find my voice. “Who are you? Does Beta Lucas know you’re here?”
He nodded. “Yes, he knows. My name is Jay. I’m a secret warrior of Alpha Jake, who was alive until recently.”
I felt a wave of anxiety. “Is Alpha Jake really dead?”
Jay’s expression grew serious. “Someone wanted to kill Alpha Jake. We don’t know who ordered it, and he’s still missing. For now, no one can know about me. It should be our secret.”
I felt a knot form in my stomach at his words. “Really?”
Jay’s gaze softened. “Beta Lucas will double your allowance and ensure you have everything you need. The only condition is that you remain silent.”
I looked at him, trying to understand the full scope of what he was offering. “Everything?”
Jay nodded, but then he frowned slightly. He seemed to be evaluating something in his mind. “What do you like, you like jewel? Money or…”
Before he could finish his thought, I surprised him by asking, “Can you get me a slice of the wedding cake? It’s been so long since I’ve had any.”
Jay’s eyes widened in surprise. “Cake?”
I nodded, Jay sighed then few minutes passed Beta Lucas entered the room, carrying a plate with a generous slice of wedding cake along with some other food. I felt a surge of happiness as I saw the cake, even I did not know how Beta Lucas know I want to eat.
“I’m so hungry!” I exclaimed, eagerly reaching for the plate.
Beta Lucas chuckled, his eyes twinkling with amusement. “So, why are you only wearing a towel?”
I glanced at Jay, and we both exchanged a moment of shared embarrassment. I quickly ran back to the closet to change into my casual dress. When I returned, Jay was seated, and Beta Lucas had already left.
I took a seat and looked at the cake, feeling a mixture of relief and curiosity. “Do you want some cake?” I asked Jay.
Jay hesitated for a moment, then nodded. “Sure, I’d like that.”
As we shared the cake, Jay admitted, “I was actually quite hungry myself.”
We both laughed, the tension between us easing. The simple act of sharing food provided a small but comforting distraction from everything that had happened. The cake was delicious, and it felt like a rare moment of normalcy amidst the chaos.
Jay looked at me with a smile. “I’m glad you’re enjoying the cake.”
I nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude. “Yeah.” I didn’t know why, but my heart started beating faster when I looked into Jay’s eyes. There was something about him that made me feel different, something I couldn't quite understand. I had never been in love before, so I wasn’t sure if that’s what this was.
But it didn’t matter—I reminded myself that I could never feel that way about him or anyone else. I was the widow of Alpha Jake now, and it was forbidden for me to love anyone else. The weight of that realization made me pull back, and I quickly lowered my gaze to the floor, trying to hide my confusion.
Jay must have noticed the change in me because his voice cut through the silence. “Why did you go so quiet all of a sudden?”
I hesitated for a moment before asking, “Are we even allowed to talk like this? As far as I know, I’m prohibited from speaking to other men unless it’s something important, and even then, only Beta Lucas.”
Jay smiled, his eyes warm but playful. “That’s exactly why you need to stay quiet and not tell anyone about me.”
A small smile tugged at my lips. I nodded in understanding, realizing that keeping Jay’s presence a secret was more important than following those rigid rules. “I understand. But if you know Alpha Jake so well…” I paused, my curiosity taking over. “Was he really a good man?”
Jay’s laugh was deep and genuine, filling the room. “Of course, he was. Handsome, good, kind, and very caring. He was everything you’d expect from a leader.”
I smiled too, picturing the man who had been my husband, though I never truly got to know him. “I wish I had met him properly when he was still alive.”
Jay’s smile faltered just a little, turning more somber. “Maybe you will, one day. We still don’t know for sure if Alpha Jake is dead or alive.”
I nodded, a sense of uncertainty creeping in. The thought of Alpha Jake being alive somewhere, unknown and lost, was hard to process. But before I could dwell on it, we both heard a knock at the door. My heart skipped as I realized it was Cindy, the servant. My eyes darted to Jay, and his expression became serious.
“Don’t tell anyone about me,” he whispered urgently.
“I promise,” I whispered back, just as Cindy knocked again. Jay gave me a final look, and before I could say anything else, he moved swiftly to the window and disappeared into the night.
I stood there, my heart still racing for reasons I couldn’t fully explain. Cindy’s voice called out again from the hallway, but all I could think about was the strange, unexpected encounter with the mysterious man named Jay.
As I slowly walked toward the door, I knew that keeping his secret would be harder than I had imagined.
