Hector threw himself into his duties as a fully trained serviceman. He found it stimulating to stride through the Pale, walking beside or behind Tad as the width of the paved way dictated, fixing the geophysical map of the policosmos into his kinaesthetic memory.
Like all other service trainees, he had the map imprinted into his base data set, but walking over the ground determined physical memory in a way that could not be obtained from data sets alone. Not until training was complete were trainees allowed onto the actual streets of the Pale. Hector, with his entrance from Beta Gate and his days tagging along with Tad at the time of the PPA cleanup, was the only one who had ever stepped beyond the confines of the trainee oikos.
