Chapter 12: The Relic of Time

814 Words
The ruins of Tempora were as ancient as they were mysterious, shrouded in the legends of a time long past when time itself was a malleable force, bent and woven by the magics of old. Liora and Elric, carrying the weight of their first success from the Lumina Caves, approached the ruins with a mix of anticipation and wariness. The second relic, the Relic of Time, was reputed to be the most enigmatic of all, protected by puzzles and traps that manipulated time itself. The entrance to Tempora was marked by enormous stone pillars, each carved with intricate symbols that seemed to dance and shift when looked at indirectly. The air here was thick with a palpable sense of suspended animation, as if the very atmosphere was holding its breath. As they stepped through the archway, the ground beneath them shimmered, and for a moment, Liora felt as though she was walking through different moments simultaneously. Shadows flickered at the edge of her vision, echoes of events that had taken place long ago, or perhaps ones that were yet to come. Elric caught her arm, steadying her. "Time is thin here," he murmured, his eyes scanning the shifting shadows warily. "We need to be careful. Every step could be a step through centuries." Liora nodded, taking a deep breath to center herself. The first challenge presented itself almost immediately. Ahead of them lay a corridor, its walls lined with hourglasses of various sizes, each sand timer flowing at a different rate. At the end of the corridor stood a door, sealed by a complex lock that pulsed with a gentle, golden glow. "Look," Elric pointed towards the hourglasses. "Each timer must correspond to the lock. We need to align them to the right moment for the door to open." Working together, they began to turn the hourglasses, synchronizing them by trial and error. It was a delicate process; each adjustment seemed to alter the flow of time around them. Shadows lengthened and shortened with each turn, and the air buzzed with the energy of contained time. After several tense minutes, they aligned the last hourglass, and the lock on the door clicked open. Beyond the door, the ruins unfolded like a labyrinth, designed to disorient and confuse. Time here was a puzzle in itself, with paths looping back on themselves, and moments repeating endlessly until the correct path was chosen. They navigated through corridors where their younger selves ran past, giggling echoes of their earlier adventures in the forest. The heart of the ruins was a vast chamber, dominated by a gigantic sundial that cast a shadow upon a circular arrangement of stones. The relic had to be there, but as they approached, the shadow on the sundial began to spin wildly, the sun tracking across the sky at an impossible speed, casting night and day over them in rapid succession. Elric grasped Liora’s hand. "The sundial! It controls the time in this chamber. We must stop it at the right moment." They watched as the shadow passed over the stones, each stone lighting up briefly with a radiant light when the shadow touched it. Liora noticed that one particular stone glowed brighter and for longer than the others. "There! That's where we need the shadow to stop," she shouted over the whirring sound of time. Timing their run to perfection, they dashed across the chamber during the brief twilight that occurred every few seconds as day turned to night and back again. Reaching the sundial, Liora threw her weight against the gnomon, the part casting the shadow, slowing it down with all her might. Elric joined her, and together, they brought the chaotic spinning to a halt, aligning the shadow with the brightly glowing stone. Instantly, the chamber stabilized. The rapid passage of day and night ceased, and the stone under the shadow clicked upwards slightly, revealing a small, intricately carved hourglass, glowing with its own inner light. The Relic of Time. Elric carefully picked it up, his hands trembling slightly. "We have it," he said, a look of awe on his face. "But we must move quickly now. The ruins won't hold now that its heart has been taken." As they made their way back through the labyrinthine ruins, the puzzles seemed to unravel themselves, as if acknowledging their right to pass. The hourglasses flowed backward, returning them to the entrance with dizzying speed, each step retracing their journey in reverse until they stood once again at the ruins’ entrance. The world outside hadn't changed, but Liora felt as if eons had passed within her soul. She glanced at Elric, seeing the same unspoken understanding in his eyes. They had the second relic, and with it, the hope of breaking his curse grew stronger. But the journey was far from over, and time, they both knew, was still not on their side
