“Hey, how did your little hangout go with you know who?” Jen asked me as I wait for my driver to pick me up after school.
“It went alright, he showed me the school pool.”
“I knew there’s a pool, didn’t go to see how big it is though”, she said.
“It’s huge, Andy joined the team last year.”
“I think the whole school knew about that Brit”, she laughed, “so you and Andy getting all cozy I see.”
“We’re just talking Jen, no reason to get jealous”, I smirked.
She scoffed, “I’m not jealous, he can date whoever he wants. I don’t care.”
“If you say so”, I winked as my driver arrived, “want a ride?”
“Nah, I’m taking the subway just going to change out of this uniform. See you tomorrow girl”, she hugged me. Jenelle was here from a scholarship, she worked extra hard in middle school to get accepted into this school because she was my friend and still dating Andy at that time.
Our uniform consisted of dark blue pleated skirts at knee length although the popular girls wore their own at mid-thigh, white shirt with a dark blue tie, long white socks, and black shoes. The guys were long pants instead, we have a matching jacket with the school’s monogram on it.
“Good evening Miss Brittany”, my driver Erik greeted me as he opened the back seat door.
“Same to you”, I got in. My younger sister eight-year-old sister Blair was seated along with our stepbrother Spencer who was twelve years old.
“Evening guys.”
“Mom said that Mr. Ken will be home for dinner tonight”, Spencer said.
Spencer doesn’t call my father dad though his mother and my father were married for three years now. Blair started to call his mother, mom but I called her by her first name; she can never replace my mother although my mom did some terrible things.
“Yay, daddy is home today”, Blair cheered.
When we arrived home, our maid took our bags and jackets to our room.
“My darlings, you’re finally home”, Delia my stepmother hugged each of us, “Your father is up in his study.”
“Daddy!” Blair yells and ran up the stairs.
“Careful Blair”, Delia said, “so Spencer how was school? Did you do well on that presentation you been stressing over all weekend?” She asked her son.
“Yes, I got an A; thanks to Brittany's suggestion who told me what to do Saturday night”, he smiled.
“I told you 7th-grade presentation is nothing to stress over about and the solar system was perfect to use. I have been there”, I patted his shoulder.
“I’ll be making dinner tonight, I give the chef two nights off”, Delia announced.
“Mom, can you cook?” Spencer asked.
“Yes, it’s been a while but I’m sure I still have the skills. I’m making some brownies for Blair’s school cake sale tomorrow.”
I heard the timer went off, “the first batch is ready”, she went back to the kitchen.
“Thank you so much, it’s a good thing I didn’t do the volcano. The girl who did it got a B plus, but it still was cool”, Spencer hugged me.
“Your welcome, if you need any more cool ideas for the science fair you may have next semester you know where to find me”, I go up the stairs to my room.
“Hey kiddo”, dad greeted me as he walked out of his study with Blair on his back.
“Hey, dad.”
We both shared the same color eyes, Blair got mom’s hazel eyes and dad’s black hair.
“Enjoyed school today? No one gave you too much trouble?” He asked.
“No, it was alright”, I replied.
An incident happened last month and my dad had to come to school to deal with it personally. Kayla and her friends thought it would have been funny to prank me and stuff rotten things in my locker, her parents were involved as well and they weren’t happy since they were associated with dad’s company.
They all got a week’s detention along with writing me an apology letter after the principal read it.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes and I finally got my chemistry project”, I nodded.
“Partner?”
“Unfortunately, but he’s cool.”
“He?”
“It’s a guy, but he’s nice don’t worry and wasn’t part of the bullying crew”, I assured him.
He was in the crew indirectly, even if he didn’t do anything directly to me he was still in the crew who did it.
“Good”, he nodded and put Blair down, “go start on that homework of yours then bring it for me to see”, he told her.
She went to her room.
“Looking for any colleges? I knew you had a career day last year and another one will be up sometimes next semester.”
“A few have crossed my mind just have to do some more research on it and what program I want to get into”, I shrugged.
“How about next summer we go check out the colleges personally like get a tour of the campuses and talk about the programs available with persons there?” He suggested.
“Really?”
“Yeah just the two of us, but by spring have a list of colleges you are interested in”, he said.
“New York University is one on the list.”
“Good, but think bigger like Boston or Princeton.”
I went to my room.

“Are you ready Brittany? Your school calls at 8 and you know you’re only allowed to be five minutes late”, Delia said as I put on my shoes.
“I’m aware”, I said.
It was now 7:45 am and school is ten minutes away, if it was earlier I could have walked but Delia wouldn’t allow it. Only scholar students walk to school or if they were lucky enough to get a drop to school by their parents or someone.
“Blair and Spencer already left with their driver, Erik is waiting outside for you and your lunch is already packed”, she informed me.
I picked up my bag and left my room, dad already left for work and Delia will be going to her work soon.
She was a manager and a part-time actress but hasn’t done any acting in a while.
“Here, have a good day at school”, she kissed my cheek and hands me the brown bag, “aren’t you tired of this bag? Blair and Spencer don’t even have this, their lunches are given to them at school. I can call the school and add your meal plan as the Morgan did for their daughter.”
“I don’t even eat in the cafeteria Delia, that wouldn’t be necessary”, I put the brown bag in my book bag.
“Someone can still deliver your lunch for you, just think about it and your driving test is this Saturday”, she added.
“I’m nervous though, what if I don’t do good?”
“You will, that new car your father brought you are sitting far too long in the garage.”
“Time to go”, Erik entered the house.
I look at the clock, 7:40 am.
“Bye”, I kissed Delia and ran out of the house.

I entered the school just as the bell rang, no time for a locker stop got to run straight to French. I ran to my class and reached inside the room a few seconds before my teacher did.
“You almost got detention”, Jenelle whispered to me as I took my seat.
“Yeah, woke up late.”
“I wonder why.”
I smiled.
“You’re lucky you weren’t late mute girl, don’t want to mess up that perfect record of yours”, Kayla said behind me.
“Just leave her alone, you know her daddy will just come back in school again”, Buzz another friend of Zachary and part of the crew said.
“I’m just teasing, it’s not like I touched her”, she scoffed.
“Jenelle I heard you and Andy did it before you broke up”, Buzz said as class was going on.
“Well we didn’t”, Jenelle snapped.
“Why did you come here in the first place? Were you so desperate to be with Andy?”
“No, I came here because I always wanted to.”
“Aw so touching, it’s nice with a girl like you with that kind of background got into this prestigious school”, Kayla laughed.
Jenelle clutched her fist.
“I can’t understand how mute girl here are even friends with you, sure her family is rich but if she wasn’t how she is now then I’m sure she wouldn’t even spare you a second glance”, Kayla laughed.
“Those of you to the back, be quiet”, Mr. Blackman said and turned back to the board.
“You’ll never be one of us, charity”, Kayla whispered.
‘Shut up!” Jenelle snapped.
“Miss Franklin, detention for interrupting my class”, Mr. Blackman turned around and snapped and the popular crew behind us laughed.
“But sir I can’t stay back today I have to-”
“If you don’t show up then it’s a week’s detention, do you understand?” He warned.
Jenelle sighs, “yes sir.”
“Good and since you decided to interrupt me, come translate these phrases”, he added.
Thank goodness Jen knew her French phrases.
