Malcolm
Rain was coming down hard as I drove back to Chevalier de la Lune to console my friend’s, grief-stricken mate. All night I dreamt of Sofia doing the deed to end my friend’s life. She would cackle while looking right at me while laughing. I hoped it was just my anxiety and not visions being projected into my mind.
The car swerves on the wet road, and Addison gasps. “Malcolm!” She yells and smacks my arm.
I shake my head, “sorry,” I grumble.
“Do you need me to drive?” She asks.
I shake my head, “No, I am fine,” I respond.
“You have been driving for eight hours straight. Rico and I keep having to beg you to take a break,” Addison argues. “Seriously, pull over and let me drive.”
“No, we are almost there,” I say to her.
“We aren’t any good to anyone if we get injured or killed,” Addison adds. “And your parents would kill me if anything happens to you.”
I let out a long sigh and pulled over to the side of the road. Rico snores in the backseat and opens his eyes when the car stops. “Are we there yet?” He mumbles.
“No, we are just switching drivers,” Addison responds as we open the doors.
We run around the car and get in quickly. I am nearly soaked just from a few seconds in the rain. I look out the window as Addison slowly pulls back onto the road.
“Damn, I need to piss,” Rico grumbles.
“We will be there in twenty, Rico,” Addison tells him.
“I don’t think I can wait that long,” I hear Rico moving around behind me. “Don’t worry. I found a bottle.”
Addison cringes as Rico relieves himself in the bottle, “Seriously?” She sneers.
“Like you haven’t seen a d**k before,” Rico snorts.
“I’m a lesbian, you i***t,” Addison argues.
“And?” Rico laughs. “Ahh, yes, that is so much better,” He hums.
“Sick,” Addison grumbles.
“You are just jealous that you can’t just piss wherever,” Rico laughs.
Addison starts to say something back, and I glance at her. “Sorry, Malcolm,” she presses her lips together. “Are you having dreams about your mate again?”
I shrug but say nothing. I have told her and Rico about Sofia and my dreams. Addison is more sympathetic than Rico as she wants to find her mate, while Rico could care less about his mate. I shut my eyes and drift off to dreamland, where I see her dancing in the moonlight. Her lithe frame moves with ease while her pale skin glows. Her blue eyes stare directly at me. I step towards her, and she dances around me, beckoning me into the darkness. Like a fool, I follow her and find myself lost and calling to her. ‘Sofia,’ my voice shouts but gets lost in the gloom.
I am jolted awake when I hear shouting and open my eyes. We are at the Chevalier de la Lune gate, and Addison is arguing in French with the guard. “What’s going on?” I ask.
“He won’t let us in,” Addison responds.
I sit up and look at the wet guard. “What’s the hold up, sir?”
“Beta Roman has ordered me not to let anyone in,” The guard responds in a thick accent.
“Tell Luna Blanche that I am here,” I tell him.
“The Luna is in labor,” The guard says with fear.
“Then let the Beta know that I am here. He knows who I am,” I demand, inflecting some of my tone.
The guard stiffens, but I know it won’t affect him much. “Go on in, your majesty,” The guard bows his head. “Sorry for the trouble.” He steps back, and we drive into the pack.
I can sense the grief as we drive by the darkened houses. Some eyes look forlornly out their windows as we drive past. I get a sense of foreboding as we stop in front of the packhouse. Beta Roman, a tall and heavily built man, stands outside as we get out of the car.
“Our Alpha is dead, and his Luna is hanging on for dear life giving birth to our heir,” Roman says as I approach him.
“I’m sorry for the intrusion,” I sigh.
The Beta shakes his head, “No, your highness, I should be sorry. I should have just told the guard to let you in.”
“It is fine,” I pat his shoulder. “I am here to help.”
Roman nods as tears well up in his eyes, “I can’t believe Armand is dead. He was the strongest man I knew.”
“How is his father taking it?” I ask.
“Former Alpha Pascal and the former Luna are on their way back here. They intend to take back their titles, but he is a broken man to lose his only son,” Beta Roman explains while lighting up a cigarette, “Do you mind?” He indicates the cigarette.
“Of course not,” I respond.
Beta Roman’s eyes glaze over for a second as he takes a drag on his cigarette, “s**t,” He curses.
“What is wrong?” I ask.
“Luna Blanche has given birth to a healthy son, but she is not doing well,” He takes a deep breath.
“I need to see her,” I tell him.
He points to another building a few blocks away, “Be my guest,” He tells me. “I have work to do, your highness. I will have an omega show your warriors their rooms.”
“Thank you, Roman,” I pat his shoulder and look at Addison and Rico, who are both standing at attention. “You two can go to your rooms. I will be at the hospital with Luna Blanche.”
“I pray she makes it,” Addison says to me.
“Me too, Addison,” I say and walk through the rain towards the pack hospital. I am drenched when I reach the door and am whisked inside by concerned nurses.
“Come in, your highness,” A nurse grabs my wet sleeve and practically drags me indoors. “The Luna is fading fast but is asking for you.”
I nod and sigh heavily. The nurse leads me down a long hallway, and I hear the distinctive cry of a newborn. It pains me that the boy will never know his father. I am led into a room, and Blanche sits on the bed, but her eyes are closed.
“I’m so glad you are here,” She opens her eyes and gives me a weak smile. “Armand loved you so,” she sniffled.
I step towards her, “I am so sorry for your loss, Blanche.”
“I don’t understand what Armand did to deserve assassination. We are a humble pack with few enemies,” she cries. “My heart and wolf are aching for my mate. I don’t know if I can go on without him.”
I clasp her hand and lean down, “You must hold on for your son, Blanche. He needs you. You are a strong woman,” I assure her. “Armand told me that you are the strongest woman he ever met.”
“Armand,” She starts to cry. “My dear mate,” she holds her hands up and looks straight ahead. “I am coming for you, Armand.”
“No, Blanche,” I plead with her. “You have to hang on. For your son, for your pack.”
“His name is Bastien Armand Lavigne,” she looks at me with fading light in her eyes. “My heart is broken, and I will not be much of a mother to him. Tell him that I loved him. Please tell Bastien that his parents both loved and wanted him,” she says in a near whisper.
“Hold on, Blanche,” I plead with her. “Hold on,” I say as her hand slips from mine. “Doctors!” I shout as the alarms on the machines connected to Blanche go off. A doctor and several murses run into the room and start to work on Blanche. I move out of their way and pray to the Goddess to spare her. “I freed you from the prison your sister held you in,” I say loudly. “Please save this woman,” I plead to no answer.
The heart machine’s steady noise tells me the answer. “The Luna is gone,” The doctor announces in French.
My heart drops as they hang their heads over Luna’s now still body. Blanche’s unseeing eyes stare straight at me as I step toward her. “I will always watch over your son,” I vow to her. I turn and walk out of the room and down the long hallway. The staff in the pack hospital begin to howl and wail. I step outside, and the mournful howls of the pack surround me. A familiar scent hangs in the air despite the rain. Xerxes comes alive and whines.
‘She is here,’ He pants. ‘Mate is here.’
I feel a cold rage as I listen to the mournful pack. “Let’s go find her,” I tell my wolf and let him take over. My clothes shred as I shift into a white wolf and take off into the woods, following the scent of sage. My fur becomes soaked, and my legs are covered in mud as the sage scent seems to surround us. I see her moving in the near-total darkness of the forest. I shift into human form, and she appears a few feet before me.
Wearing a long white linen dress, she stares me down. Her raven black hair hangs down her pale shoulders as her blue eyes regard me. Xerxes is in my head howling for his mate. “Did you kill my friend?” I ask her.
She tilts her head, “It’s good to see you again, Prince Malcolm.”
“Did you kill my friend?” I repeat and step towards her.
A peal of light laughter erupts from her beautiful mouth, “Oh, my dear,” She moves a circle around me, lightly caressing my naked skin, sending shivers through my body. “You know the answer to that.”
My anger rises as she leans into me. I stare down at her as she looks up at me with innocence. “Why?”
“I never ask the why, Malcolm,” she responds and caresses my cheek.
‘Mate!’ Xerxes shouts.
“Armand didn’t deserve this. None of them deserved this,” I plead with her.
“You all deserve it, my prince,” She muses. “Your kind are the monsters in this world.”
“You are a monster,” I say with quivering conviction.
Her lips hover near mine, “You don’t honestly believe that,” She whispers. “I sense your wolf fighting to claim me.”
I step back from her and take a deep breath. “I don’t want to believe it, Sofia. But are you the Chameleon Killer?”
She smirks, “I am many things, Malcolm.” She reaches up and cups my cheek. I let her lean in and press her lips against mine. She pulls back and looks me in the eyes, and I grab her in my arms and kiss her fiercely.
Xerxes howls with pleasure as I explore her mouth with my tongue. Her hands run up and down my cold naked body, even lightly grazing my growing erection. I feel the urge to take her here in the middle of the forest but resist. I pull back from her with a growl as howls echo through the woods.
“That is my cue,” Sofia touches my chest and backs away.
“No, stay,” Xerxes pleads through my lips.
Sofia waves her hands and chants in another language as a portal opens. “Until next time,” She says and disappears into the portal just as Chevalier de la Lune wolves run up to me.
I look at the wolves as two shift into Beta Roman and Delta Louis. “I needed a moment,” I tell them.
“We were concerned when there were reports that your wolf was spotted running madly through the woods,” Beta Roman nods.
“I’m fine,” I sigh.
“Good, because Alpha Pascal has arrived and wants to meet with you,” The Beta tells me.
“I will be right there, Beta,” I reply.
“Good,” He says and looks at the other wolves who disappear into the trees. Roman and Louis both shift and take off after them.
Sofia’s scent is still in the air as Xerxes whines for her. ‘Another day we will claim her, Xerxes,’ I try to reassure him. ‘And hopefully, I will be able to turn her into a queen that will be loved by all.’ I shift and run back to the packhouse.
