Aurora’s POV.
My eyes shone with unshed tears. I sat next to my mother. Aria has been down with a strange illness for some time. The pack doctors' have tried their best, but still, she is not getting any better.
I sat beside Aria’s bed, her hand in mine, as the candlelight, which was the only source of light in the room, cast a dim light in the room. Her eyes sunk into the sockets; she looked like every breath she took would be her last.
"Aurora, my child." Aria’s voice came out weakly, barely above a whisper. "I must tell you the truth."
My heart thundered in my chest, and my mind raced with thoughts of what she had to say. What truth was she talking about?
“"What truth, Aria? You're scaring me."
Aria turned to face me. "You were not born into our pack, Aurora. You were found, abandoned in the forest, as a tiny pup. You were just a few days old when I found you.”
Her words were like a punch in the gut. "What do you mean? I am your daughter, right? You are my daughter. "I am a member of this pack.”
Aria's nod shattered my hopes. "I took you in and raised you as my own. But your true parents... I never knew who they were. You were just a little pup, not bigger than my palm when I found you.”
Tears welled up in my eyes as I tried to wrap my head around her words. "Why are you telling me this now, Aria? After all these years? Why?… I was so happy without knowing the truth.” My voice was choked with emotion as I spoke.
Aria gave me a weak smile. "I want you to know the truth before I go, Aurora. You deserve to know where you come from, even if it's not yet known for sure.”
I gulped, trying to accept the secrets Aria had kept hidden for so long. "But why keep it a secret all these years?"
A drop of tears fell from her eyes to the pillow, her voice barely above a whisper. "Fear, Aurora. Fear of losing you, of you leaving us. You are an omega, different from the others, and always picked on. I wanted to protect you from the truth, from the possibility of self-hatred.”
I felt my throat run dry as I looked at the woman who had raised me—the only mother I had ever known, Elma—who stood up against the whole pack for my sake. "You're not leaving me, Aria. You're not going anywhere."
Aria's smile was weak, but I got the message. “"I'm sorry, Aurora. My time is coming to an end, or, should I say, has come. But I want you to know that you are loved, no matter where you come from. You are mine, and I will always be with you in here." She said this and placed a hand on her chest, on the left part, indicating her heart.
As I held her hand, tears rushed down my face. I knew that my life was about to change forever, and I knew that in this case, it was for the worst. The truth Aria had kept hidden for so long tested everything I thought I knew about myself and life as a whole.
“B-but mom…” I mumbled as a drop of tears fell from my eyes into her hand.
Aria's breath came in short gasps. "Aurora, my child, never give up. No matter what obstacle or challenge life throws at you, do not give up. Do not listen to those who have bad things to say about you. Remember, people will only throw a stone at a tree with good fruits. No one cares about a tree with bad fruit.”
Tears rushed down my face as I held her hand, and the weight of her words crashed down my shoulders. "I won't, Aria. I promise. But please, don't leave me. I can't bear the thought of living without you. You have to stay, please, mom.”
Aria's voice was very low; I could see she was struggling to speak. "You're strong, Aurora. Stronger than you think. Don't let anyone or anything break your spirit. You have so much to offer this world."
I felt like my whole world was crashing to the ground. “What…what…will happen?”
Aria's gaze met. Her eyes had a knowing look in them. "You will take care of yourself, Aurora. You will make your dreams a reality, and you will make me proud. Promise me, Aurora. Promise me you will never give up."
I nodded, my voice barely audible when I spoke. "I promise, Aria. I'll make you proud. I'll chase my dreams, no matter what. I will not allow anyone to pick me up.”
Aria's face relaxed, a small smile on her lips. “I know you will, Aurora. I know you will."
As I held her hand, I could feel her life slipping away from me. I knew that I had to be strong. I had to keep my promise to Aria, no matter how hard it would be. I had to chase my dreams, even if it meant facing the hardest obstacles and challenges in life.
Aria's eyes closed and fluttered open. I held her hand, tears still rushing down my face, as I whispered, "Goodbye, Aria. I'll never forget you. I'll make you proud."
As if on cue, the candlelight went off, and the whole room was thrown into darkness. I bawled my eyes out as I sat beside Aria's lifeless body. My heart shattered into a million pieces.
The truth she had revealed to me would change my life forever, and I knew that I had to find the courage and strength to keep my promise, no matter what life had in store for me.
Who were my parents? And why did they throw me away?
Just then, a knock at the door took me out of my thoughts.
“Who is that?”
