~Zoe~ I was hooked, staring at what lay at my feet. I could not tear my eyes away from the reddened mass which had been thrown there. The sound of gurgling filled my ears, and it was like I was on a movie set because there was no way it was real life. How was it that a heart that was trying to continue beating but couldn’t as it was separated from the body that was its owner until a moment ago? Just when I thought Niklaus was going to walk away and give orders to release the young lady, he turned back at the last minute, drove his hand into her chest, and tore out her heart. He hadn’t stopped there, not at all. He had looked at me for the umpteenth time that afternoon and thrown the detached heart in my direction. It had rolled down the steps and stopped just shy of touching my feet.
