Chapter 1: The broken bond

~Zoe~ His hands slowly traced a line from my cleavage, down to my belly, and then bunched at the back of my head. I winced in discomfort, not because whatever he was doing to me was painful, but because I wasn't ready for it. Moreover, I couldn't take the risk of being punished for being intimate with a man before the official mating ceremony. I felt myself slowly being pressed down to the king-sized bed and his hands went to the waistband of my panties. The red alert in my head suddenly chimed, and I held his hand, keeping it in place. “No, Jax. We can’t”, I protested, dragging his hands away from my waist and sitting up on the bed. “C’mon baby” he breathed, reaching for me again. “Let me know how it feels with you… even if it’s just once. Besides, we are Mates. It doesn’t matter if we do it now or later because we will end up together”, he rasped and cupped my breasts again. His mouth descended on me and hot kisses were imprinted all over my body. I was morally weak at this point and all I wanted to do was to give in to this passion from my mate. I wanted him to claim me and make me his. “I'm dying to get a taste of you, baby; and I feel that you want the same thing too” He rasped roughly in my ear and dropped another kiss on the sweet spot on my neck. “Allow us to fuel this burning passion between us. No one needs to know” He was seducing me, and he was too good at the game. He was making me want to give in to his sweet talk and throw caution to the wind. But then, I heard my mother’s warning all over again. The daughter of the alpha must not be defiled before she is officially joined with her mate. If not, great consequences will follow such an act. “No. Wait, please” I insisted. “I’m sorry, but I can’t do this right now. Not until the official mating ceremony”. I saw the turmoil in his eyes. The conflict warring inside of him. He propped himself up on an elbow and stared deep into my soul, almost making me rethink my stance. Jax Cartier and I have been together for two years now. We found out that we were mates on my 18th birthday. He was the son of the Alpha of the rival Pack- Hollowbridge- whom I had secretly been admiring. You can imagine my happiness when I found out that the moon goddess had fated us to be together. That, however, did not go well with my father, the Alpha of the Moonstone Pack, and all the members of the Pack. They would never give their daughter to the enemy as a mate. “Zoe, we’ve been together for a while now. Don’t you trust that I will never hurt you? And no one will ever know that you’re not a virgin anymore. You won’t tell, and I certainly won’t. We are soul mates who will end up together no matter what. So what are you afraid of? Nothing will go wrong”. I sighed and caressed his stubble. “I know, but I’m literally at war with my father and my Pack members because I refused to listen to their warnings to reject you. Do you think it would be wise to add an extra problem to that?” The bed groaned as he lifted his weight off it and stood. He paced around the room, running his hands through his hair, looking frustrated. I wished he could understand where I was coming from. It’s a taboo in my Pack for an alpha’s daughter to be deflowered before the mating ceremony. According to stories that I’ve heard, the last two daughters who dared to flaunt the rule were demoted to Omegas and sent out of the Pack. They became rogues. I’ve used getting my degree first as an excuse whenever Jax made s****l advances at me, but he was clearly tired of hearing the same thing over and over again. “You’re right,” he finally said. “I’m sorry that I’ve been selfish; thinking just about my needs and not putting yours into consideration too”. A smile played along the lines of my face and I exhaled in relief. He understands. That was one of the first things that made me fall head over heels in love with him. Jax understands me so perfectly well, even when I’m being misunderstood by others. Looking at his perfectly structured face graced with stubble that made him look even sexier, and with the way his eyes bore into mine like he could see deep into my soul with those damn whisky-colored eyes, I felt like the luckiest woman alive. And I couldn't be more grateful for this beautiful gift from the moon goddess. “You know, you just jumped right on me immediately after I came in here and never offered me anything,” I said, smiling at him. “Why don’t you get us some drinks? Let’s have some before I go back home” The proposition seemed to brighten his mood immediately. He dashed out of the room and came back minutes later with an already-opened bottle of wine and two glasses. “Apologies for the open bottle. I took a little this morning before you arrived.” He said and poured drinks into both glasses. I gave a throaty laugh. “No problems baby. It’s not like you’re gonna poison or drug me”. He gave me a smoldering gaze while handing me my glass. “Well then, cheers to fighting for our love and getting the happiness that we deserve”. Glasses clinked, and I took a sip of the wine while Jax excused himself. I was almost at the last sip when I started feeling drowsy. The glass dropped from my hand and shattered on the floor. The room spun around timelessly and I had to find a support to lean into. I shook my head to clear out the dizziness, but it was still there. I couldn’t possibly be tipsy over a half glass of wine, right? I tried to call out to Jax but my voice was so weak that I could barely hear myself. My vision became blurry and I became weaker. That was when he came. He laid me on the bed and I felt my clothes slipping away from my body. I wanted to protest, but it was useless. I was like a dead vegetable. A tear dropped from my eye and I felt the darkness swallow me whole.
