Chapter 39

1460 Words
Four wolves burst back into the dawn pack. Back in the opal moon pack the six are sat in a circle holding hands with their eyes closed, Cressida has a fine layer of sweat over her forehead, her teeth clenched and her concentration is near unbreakable. Jasper’s eyes are partially closed as he watches his mate, worry lacing his handsome features, all sorts of words on the tip of his tongue, but his respect of her wishes outweighs his growing anxiety, but he finds it impossible to push back the apprehension completely. Each of the six can see exactly what Ava is seeing, in some sort of weird virtual reality-style scenario, Cressida is pushing her magic to limits that she has never reached before. Her whole body is feeling drained and they have only had vision for less than four minutes, but she wants desperately to increase her power, to be able to help this group, to be able to fight magic with magic, she will never be able to push herself to new heights if she does not head far outside her comfort zone, she needs to put into practice some of the vast amount of knowledge that she has been able to absorb in such a short time. Ava has to keep in mind that the others can see the same thing she does, so has to make a conscience effort to remember to not look at Hunter as much as normal. Hunter hasn’t spoken and hasn’t even looked back, his heart rate has been spiked the entire run, his head swimming in all sorts of thoughts. The others follow silently, knowing full well that they are heading straight back to the site of the deaths, not knowing the exact reasons, but the nervousness coming from the usually composed wolf is enough to tell them that it is nothing good. As soon as they reach the area, the heavy scent of blood and death hangs in the air. All of them can’t help but close their eyes, while back at opal moon they can’t smell what Ava smells. They know by the falter in her steps and her closed eyes that something is coming, the grips of the hands around the circle slowly tighten. Cressida can feel the change in Ava’s emotions, making to harder to hang on to and control her magic, but she holds out as the sheen of sweat forms into droplets running down Cressida’s ivory skin, her white blonde hair starts to slightly stick to her forehead, Jasper watches every change, biting his tongue till he tastes blood to keep the words in his mouth. The four wolves stand at the site of the alphas murder looking on. While they expected as much, while they knew it deep down in their heart, it is still hard to look at and they can only chalk it up to another failing on their behalf. They get let on trails they follow blindly and, what are the results, feels like death is following them right behind them people died while they are so close. Cressida gasps and holds Jasper's hand so tightly that he even starts to feel a bit of pain which is impressive from her human hands. This is not something she wants to view at all, but it is important for them to see it. Just trying to act like it's some odd TV show, not reality, it is just a play. They all wish it was. Scattered around the site are warriors bodies. Hanging on the tree opposite to the alpha and his meant to be Luna, Davina hangs with lifeless eyes staring at them an unknown wolf hanging beside her. 'To the one that values position over all else and the c*****e left behind' The girls look on at the girl that they held such dislike for only moments before, while they did not agree with her moral compass or her choices, and they definitely didn’t agree with her blatant seduction. But she didn't deserve this. No one deserves this. Davina’s painted lips look shocking next to her deathly pale, bloodless face. The group look at the man beside her. He is strong and handsome. 'So I guess this was her fated mate?' 'He is a beta' 'So all this came down to the fact that she didn't want to be a beta female, she wanted to be the luna, all this mess, all the ruined fates, all the love lost, just to claim a useless title' While four of the women are Lunas and Cressida is a beta female, if the moon goddess had not blessed them with the alphas as their mates, none of them would want this position. It is a lot of hard work for not much thanks, so much responsibility, endless hours, hard training. While they love the job and wouldn't give it up now, if that wasn't their place, they would have happily take a step back and just be a everyday pack member. The boys have seen a lot of Davina’s type before they found their lunas, the countless girls that approached them, wanting to be their mate, trying to force it upon them, desperate for the title. They never understood the appeal and, of course, were never going to accept someone like that. Hunter shifts and steps forward, picking up a photograph that is under Davina. It is a photo perfectly staged like the others of the two dead bodies. He flips the photo over. On the back are the words again the same that ones that were on the blank photo. He presses his lips in a straight line and looks at the bottom right-hand corner where some extra words are. 'twisted fates yet together again' Alexis sighs, her small gray wolf head moving up to look at the sky. 'Can I just say that this b*tch is f*cked up, why does all her sick little sayings, seem like she's fighting some noble cause, like is it some random justification? I think every single screw in the head is loose' No one can argue with that. Jade sighs and finally opens her eyes, looking at Cressida, who has a slight tremor of sweat dripping steadily down her face, knowing that they are pushing her friend way too far. 'Find what you can find and get back here' As soon as the link is broken, Cressida slumps down, but Jasper is been waiting for this moment, capturing her in his arms and sweeping her out of the room in a swift motion. Cressida pressed tightly to his chest. His thumb wipes sweat off her forehead as he places a kiss on her smooth skin. "You were unbelievable baby" Every day he is a little bit more proud of his mate. While he loved her and marked her the first moment they met, he was a little bit apprehensive about bringing a witch back into the pack, worrying about how she would be treated, worrying how she would fit in with the pack dynamic, worrying if she'd ever be able to find it home. He loves her no matter what but he wants her to live a happy life. She amazes him each and every day. She fits in so well yet stands on her own as a valuable member and an amazing individual. He carries her to their room and lays her down on the bed before joining the others once again. There is nothing left to find at the dawn pack, just body after body, no clues just riddles. The usual playful smile on Lucas’ face is nowhere to be seen. “This is f*cked up. Are we the cause of all this?” Alexis wraps her arms around his waist. Hunter and Ava embrace, a grim look on Hunter’s face, his golden eyes not shining like usual, looking dull in comparison. Those golden eyes have seen too much in such a short time, they all have. 'She would do this whether we were around or not. Three couples were taken before the guardians were formed, three were lost after. We may have changed her timeline and some targets, but she will do it whether we are around or not' Ava nods, she understands Alexis’ words and knows that she is right, but it is hard to plaster a smile on her usually happy face. 'It feels personal, but we are not at fault' They inform the dawn pack before taking off back to opal moon. The last two packs they have left without a leader, but they have other things to worry about, but it just adds more burden to the already pressing weight that is pressing on each of their shoulders.
