Chapter 35

1955 Words
The ringing seems to get louder and louder as Axel fumbles with the phone, the usual collected man is flustered, they haven’t even had a chance to nurse their wounds, no chance to regroup, they have 3 displaced packs, they aren’t even together as a group. Everyone is spread all over the country. Jade takes the phone off Axel, holding his hand tightly as she answers. “This is Jade” “Hi this is Luna Davina” Jade breathes a sigh of relief. If the Luna is calling, then they must have felt something or discovered something. “What is it Luna Davina?” “The alpha is strung up and dead” Her voice has a hint of sorrow, but her words are even. “What? He is and you are not?” Jade didn’t mean to sound so harsh, but it is odd to change so much. While Grace was by herself, her mate was already dead and it looked like a rush job, she wasn’t presented in the same way as the others and the fact that she is a relative of the guardians makes her out of the norm. Jade wants to scream, she wants to cry, all her exhaustion crashing down on her. They haven’t even had a moment to breathe. “Okay, where are you?” “The dawn pack” “We will be there soon” Jade hangs up the phone, three sets of eyes all solely focused on hers. “Could it be a trap?” “What if it isn’t?” “Talk with the others” Jade nods and Cressida grabs Jade’s hand and Jasper’s hand. Her new skill is to be able to join in on pack links. ‘Hey guys, I know that we have had no time but the phone rang again’ There is a collective silence as they all know what that means. Never in their lives, never did the powerful group think that their worst nightmare would become a ringtone of the phone. Jade explains the situation. ‘We are not sure if it is a trap, she didn’t sound very upset about her mate being dead and why is she fine?’ ‘If it is a trap they should have used a better actress’ Alexis stands at Blue moon looking at Lucas, Christian and Kira chatting, Lucas looks back at her and nods. ‘Blue moon is close, Jade, you head back to Opal moon and keep safe, if it is a trap, we will sort it out. If it isn’t, we will look it over’ Ava instantly joins. ‘We will meet you there. Four of us are better than two, Jade and Axel you guys head back and join Alina and Phoenix and start trying to research the buildings’ ‘Keep the link open, I need to know what is happening every second’ Alexis sighs. ‘I guess we will sleep when we are dead’ Lucas looks at her shaking his head. ‘Way to jinx a dangerous situation’ Jade can’t help but smile. She feels uncomfortable about the situation, but if they all go running off all the time, they will never be able to research. Without being able to research, they will never get a step ahead. They will be pulled from one location to the next, led by the nose. The group of four get on the plane, crossing paths with the four wolves traveling to the dawn pack, heading into the unknown, running on pure adrenaline, praying that their tired minds don’t give out first. At opal moon, Daniel, who runs one of the sections of Opal moon and Caden, who is Phoenix’s Beta, their extra alpha Sam, have combined to settle the sunset pack, spreading them over the three sections and organizing the extra security measures needed. Not a single person complains, they wouldn’t go against the moon goddess's plan, they wouldn’t stay back at the sunset pack and become a burden to Alina and Phoenix, proud of their alpha and Luna, who have dragged the sunset pack up from a joke to reaching new heights, their leader even getting selected for such an important task. Alina and Phoenix made their way straight to the alpha house after the link. They aren’t about to neglect duties and be with their pack while the others are working hard. There has been a delivery of werewolf literature from different locations, so one room is filled with random books that look like they haven’t been opened for hundreds of years. The dust collected is insane. Hunter is just happy to keep busy. If he is working toward bringing those responsible down, it seems to put his mind at ease. Going back to new moon, even if it was for the shortest time just reminded him that he was never going to be able to bring his mother home, would never be able to show her how well Ava and him can run the pack, see that he can be a better alpha than his father ever dreamed of being. Hunter was glad for the distraction of Tyson and Max, not so much Violet, she just adds an extra headache to the mix. Alexis and Lucas run as fast as they can. They are slightly further away than Ava and Hunter so they want to make up the distance without holding up the show. The blonde wolf watches the grey wolf in front of him, she is so much smaller than the others, he always lets her set the pace, but sometimes he thinks that it would be better to set a slower pace for her because she runs so fast to the point that she will just burn herself out, but he knows that even if he went in front of her and slowed she would either overtake him or push him to speed up. ‘Are you tired princess?’ ‘Well I am halfway between no longer being able to feel my legs and my muscles are spasming so much that I have to keep turning and checking that you aren’t hacking me with a machete when I am not looking’ ‘If I hack you with a machete, I will do it to your face’ ‘How about you just don’t try and murder me?’ ‘You are pretty mouthy, I can’t make those sort of promises’ Alexis shakes her head, what an i***t. She looks back, he looks like he is going for a leisurely stroll, when she is sure her legs are about to fall off her body. She increases her speed slightly, before Lucas has a chance to register she springs off a tree, launching into the air, shifting in the process. Lucas shakes his head and slightly deviates from his course to catch her on his back. She tightens her grip on him and he takes off at full speed, his huge size and long legs ripping through the forest with ease. Alexis settles into his fur, it is quite comfortable but there is no way she could sleep. If she fell off he would probably leave her behind. With his speed the wind whips wildly around her body with an odd sort of howling noise. They meet up with Ava and Hunter. Ava laughs when she sees Alexis. ‘Are you having a rest?’ ‘Lucas said that I am painfully slow’ Lucas snorts, she is trying to make him sound like an ass at all times, he does a good enough job of that, she doesn’t need to make things up. ‘How did me asking if you were tired turn into me badmouthing you?’ ‘I read between the lines’ ‘Uhh huh’ He decides to never ask her how she is going again. But it is a lie, his main concern in life is Alexis and her comfort and happiness. The two blonde and one dark alpha wolves tear through the forest at break-neck speeds, Alexis hanging on for dear life, but having the time of her life, her legs no longer hurt and there is no way she could get this kind of speed. As they arrive at the border of the Dawn pack. Jade, Axel, Jasper and Cressida arrive at the alpha house. With the combination of wolves and a witch or witches they decide to keep Jasper and Cressida with them. There are enough people to run Opal moon now with the addition of the sunset pack. If the enemy has magic backing them up, then they need the same. Alina pairs with Cressida to tell her everything that they thought had happened magic wise. Only when they gauge the skills of their opponent can they look for a weakness, but just by the general description and looking at the pendant, Cressida knows that she is outclassed by a long way. Alina and Cressie hit the magic books and the others start researching the buildings. Jade spends the time wisely trying to contact the elders. But the elders are notoriously reclusive, just randomly showing up to hold weddings and Alpha, Luna ceremonies. There is no direct contact, it is more a put out word and they contact you type of situation which is infuriating when they are on a race against time. But that isn’t what is making Jade the most anxious, she feels like she is sitting in safety while she has sent half the group out to the sl*ughter. She feels incredibly uncomfortable about the whole situation. At the border of the dawn pack, Alexis has long flipped off Lucas’ back in an exaggerated fashion, shifting in mid air. Ava can appreciate the theatrics and Hunter’s mind is out of the deep pit that over thinking can suck him into. Lucas’ non stop jokes and the bickering between Lucas and his mate that they happily let the others in on. Hunter and Ava both find it hard to believe that the two are actually older than them, but the immaturity brings an element of fun to an otherwise sombre run. Two border patrol meet them not long after they cross the border and escort them to the edge of the clearing. They can see the pack house ahead. At the edge of the treeline there are a few piles of clothes ready for them. Alexis can’t help herself. ‘This is so oddly accommodating’ Certain basic needs slip a person's mind during grief, such forward thinking would be rare when the alpha of a pack dies. ‘I know’ ‘As annoying as Lucas is, if he had just died, the last thing on my mind would be to supply clothes’ Lucas’ large blonde wolf nudges the grey wolf hard enough that she nearly knocks into the tree. ‘See I told you that you loved me’ ‘No, I would be too busy partying. What? Did you think that meant I would be grieving?’ The four shift and Alexis jumps into Lucas’ arms, giving him a big kiss. In this dangerous situation, her normal jokes seem a bit harsh and, instead of apologizing, which would give him the upper hand, she just shows that she loves him this way. Lucas knows that she is only joking, but happily takes his naked mate into his arms. He kisses his mark on her shoulder before his lips attach to her ear, his hot breath tickling her. The fine layer of sweat covering his sculpted body from the big run. “You will pay for that later” Alexis looks at him, her blue-grey eyes shining, she kisses him hard on the lips. “I look forward to it”
