As the car pulls up, Davina nearly falls out of it in an effort to get away from Alexis.
Ava and Hunter exit the car behind. Ava observes Davina’s pale face and frightened look, a small smirk forming on her face.
Only Alexis would manage to frighten someone so much without actually laying a hand on them. Her smart ass mouth is so well trained against her own mate, that shutting anyone else down is as easy as a walk in the park. Even being in the rear vehicle, Ava still couldn't shake the feeling that she wanted to rip Davina limb from limb just from the way she looked at Hunter the moment they walked in the pack.
Two of the warriors march ahead and the group of four regroup and follow behind, keeping very vigilant.
Davina trails behind, not daring to look at the two handsome men again.
She can tell from the way Alexis and Ava walk together they have the same style and she knows that they will be just the same type of people, so it's not really worth the risk, no matter how exquisite the prize is at the end. She just has no idea that they aren't quite the same. Ava is sweet and friendly all the time except in her jealousy surrounding Hunter, Ava won't show it with words as much as she will show it with her fists. Davina doesn't know that she should be grateful to only have to hear Alexis' crazy words because the alternative would be so much more painful.
Davina has no fighting skills, relying on the men to come to her willingly, so going against two raging Lunas is not something that she will be able to walk away from.
As they enter the site of the murders, it still catches them slightly off guard. While they're expecting it, while they have seen it all before, it is still hard to witness.
In front of them, strung up on the tree the same as the rest, is the crude basic rope suspending the two bodies. Not a speck of blood can be seen, the same lifeless eyes, the same clean scene.
Alexis looks at the luna beside her with the obvious Alpha mating mark and then looks at the naked woman hanging beside the alpha. They knew nothing about a second body, they assumed that it was an alpha by himself.
"Who is that?"
Davina looks at her mate and then at the girl before answering with very little emotion.
“That is his fated mate"
Suddenly, all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place, the way that she could look with no grief, the way she could still function normally, if a mate is to die it takes such a toll that the other is lucky to survive, let alone be in such a stable place.
The way she was looking at Lucas and Hunter, caring little for the true moon goddess' planned fated mate, only caring about her own selfish desires.
A position climber.
No love can be seen as Davina looks over the man that she rejected her own mate for, the man that she broke up his fated mate relationship, the man that she let mark her.
Alexis has not seen many chosen mates so this is all new to her. The others have been around werewolves their whole lives, so obviously has seen this side but never seen a chosen mate care so little about the other. There are a lot of reasons for a chosen mate, love, fated mates die, trying to move on from that, rejection, trying to move on from that.
To actually want to get tied to someone for life, there is usually a deep foundation of love, but to see a fated mate hanging right beside the alpha, she got rejected yet still met her demise with him.
What type of fairness is that?
It is unreasonably harsh.
The girl with obvious seduction techniques gets to be Luna, got to take her mate, now gets to stand here looking at the two dead bodies while Davina still has a pack. She is still alive and well.
What fairness is that?
"His fated mate is within the pack?"
"No she is……. With my fated mate in a neighbouring pack"
Alexis wants to laugh. What type of soap opera sh*t is this?
"You swapped fated mates?"
"No. She was just trying to make Jacob jealous after getting rejected"
Ava and Alexis exchange glances. What type of a messed up situation is this? They are all so young, yet how did they deviate so far off the plan to end up here.
'This doesn't make any sense, this is unlike any of the others. While she is his fated mate, someone else is technically Luna, someone else is bearing the alpha's mark and the one strung up beside him is bearing someone else's mark I assumed it had to do with the couple aspect'
‘If this was the first one we had seen, if it wasn't for the others that were normal, I would think that she's going after ones that went against the natural order, weird situation’
Somehow, the messy tangle of the relationships in question seems to detract from the fact that there is two dead bodies hanging in front of them, making it very hard to concentrate on the fact, they are on a moon goddess mission yet dealing with people that have gone so far against them in goddesses plan.
Lucas looks at Davina.
"Take it from here. Get everyone out of this area for the time being"
Lucas' voice is thick, rich and full of authority, making Davina slightly sway in her determination not to go against the two angry lunas.
These two would be the ultimate mates but she may just die in the process of acquiring them.
Having never been met with rejection before, she thinks that it's actually her choice and the girls are the only obstacle in acquiring what she wants. She doesn't notice that the boys have absolutely no interest in her whatsoever, that the boys would take their own life before straying from their mates. Davina doesn't see that true love because she hasn't experienced it.
Davina motions with her hand and the warriors quickly follow her back to the vehicles. It is good enough to be in charge of the Dawn pack at the moment. Really, she doesn't need to choose an alpha as a mate, she can take anyone now and make them the alpha of the pack. What someone with very little experience like her does not realize is that it takes more than a title to keep the pack safe. It takes that Alpha blood strength to be the big deterrent against invaders. Her way of thinking can only lead to the Dawn packs downfall.
Ava and Alexis visibly relax when Davina leaves. Lucas has been watching on the whole time in amusement and Hunter still doesn't realize what has happened.
'Same again, let's investigate'
The group moves through the site in an organized fashion. Even with their minds clouded with exhaustion, they are still sharp and thorough.
'There is no scent covering this time, it is like they are leaving a trail for us'
'So Dawn pack is not the trap. Out there lays the trap?'
'Whatever it is, do we have any choice but to run headfirst into it?'
All four nod their heads in agreement they aren't about to stand here and investigate nothing when such an open trail is available to them. While they may be running straight into a trap for investigation purposes and getting to the bottom of it all, they have to.
As usual, the bodies are spotless. There is nothing to be investigated. The only lead is the most obvious scent trail. They all strip and shift. Hunter takes the lead. He has the best sniffing nose out of the four of them and can lead them at a high speed while tracking.
Back in Opal moon, six of them are sitting together in the large lounge room, books piled high around them in some sort of order. Mostly the order consists of read and unread.
The words have long blurred together.
While Cressida has had the most sleep out of all of them, she also has been stuck in these books for many weeks, the niggling headache that seems to constantly be sitting just behind her eyes making it hard to concentrate for long periods of time.
Jade is having micro naps between boring page after boring page, really struggling to keep her eyes open, not even sure if she is helping in anyway, not sure if she is reading the right information or retaining any of the right information. The others have told her to go to bed numerous times. She can't possibly do it with the others out there, off pack, she needs to know they are safe and will only sleep when they are on their way back to Opal moon.
The witches targets are so erratic that she fears that they will not be able to get a solid lead and may never be able to guess her movements and that is the biggest worry.
The victims this time seem to be so different from the others that it makes it hard to make any correlation.
They cannot keep following a trail of dead bodies, they need something.
Jade raises her arms above her head and stretches her back. Her fingertips are brown with a dusty residue of the old books, a slight black tinge coming from the ink that they have been trying very hard not to touch, but it is hard not to run a finger along the tiny font just to be able to follow it, making sure they aren't missing anything.
In the other group, the four have well and truly left the Dawn pack border and are running at high speeds through the trees. The sleepiness that they felt previously is a thing of the past as they are all wired, excited yet slightly frightened of what they are going to find.
The scent trail is so easy to track they don't even have to try hard, it is like they have purposely rubbed scent all over the place to make sure the group would follow.
After they run for approximately an hour, they finally come to a familiar looking concrete structure. It is identical to the last one down to every last detail, even the trees surrounding it are incredibly similar, the thick foliage hiding a large majority of it from prying eyes.
Basic raw materials sitting permanently yet untended, but this time there is something vastly different, causing a sense of relief at the same time as a sense of apprehension, because they cannot sense a single other living presence in or around the building.
