Qin Yixue gently closed the door to the room and had just reached the first floor when she heard a noise coming from the hallway.
“Honey, I heard Zhang Guoqiang sent his daughter over?” a man's voice asked.
“Hush, lower your voice,” Qin Yixue hurriedly scolded, walking into the hallway to stop Baili Mo, who had spoken too loudly.
The man was around thirty or forty years old, with a commanding presence. He wore a finely tailored suit, and a luxury watch glimmered on his wrist.
“Have the kids gone to bed?” he asked, walking over to Qin Yixue’s side and kissing her on the forehead.
Qin Yixue nodded, “Why are you so late today?”
“I had a business dinner tonight, that’s why I’m late,” Baili Mo said, sitting down on the sofa and rubbing his temples. “Is there something going on?”
Qin Yixue walked over and poured him a glass of water. “Of course, it’s about Yueyue.”
“Yueyue? Zhang Guohua’s daughter?” Baili Mo asked, recalling what his wife had mentioned the day before.
Qin Yixue explained briefly, “Zhang Guohua has been too busy to take care of his daughter, so he asked us to look after her for a while.”
“Yeah, I can see she’s really pitiful. And since Su Ruolan passed away, it seems like Zhang Guohua hasn’t been very kind to Yueyue. She even has her mother’s last name,” Qin Yixue continued.
“Su Ruolan helped us out a lot with the company back in the day. Now, it’s only right that we help out with Yueyue,” she added, her voice softening with empathy.
“That’s only natural. You take charge of this, and if there’s any issue, just let me know.”
Qin Yixue nodded and said, “School starts in a few days. You should arrange for Yueyue to be in the same class as our son. He can look out for her a bit.”
“Alright.”
September
Jinghai No. 3 High School
The first day of school was here, and the gates of Jinghai No. 3 High School were bustling with students and parents.
Since Su Yueyue was a transfer student, Qin Yixue first took her to the administration office to handle some paperwork.
By the time all the formalities were completed, it was already 10:00 AM.
“Yueyue, if anything happens at school, go look for your brother, okay?” Qin Yixue said, holding the girl’s hand as they walked toward her classroom.
The little girl was so soft and adorable; Qin Yixue couldn’t help but worry that someone might pick on her.
But as long as Yueyue was with her son, no one would dare, she thought. After all, she knew how people at school treated Baili Chen.
“Okay, Auntie,” Yueyue whispered, carefully following her.
Once she saw Yueyue enter her class, Qin Yixue felt reassured and turned to leave. But before going, she stopped by the window where Baili Chen was sitting and reminded him, “Don’t bully your sister.”
It was the first day of school, and the classroom was chaotic since the teacher hadn’t arrived yet.
However, the noise died down as soon as Su Yueyue entered the room.
She was wearing the same black-and-white school uniform as the others, with her hair tied in two low ponytails. Her small face was delicate, like a porcelain doll in a display window.
Before long, the students began to whisper among themselves.
“Oh my God, this girl looks like a fairy!”
“She’s so cute!”
“Hey, did you see? Her eyes are different colors!”
“Is she sick or something?”
“Stop saying nonsense!”
“She’s so pretty! She might be even more beautiful than the school goddess!”
“I overheard Baili Chen’s mom say something about a sister…”
“The school bully’s sister? No way, he only has a brother, right? And she has the last name Su…”
“Maybe she’s a cousin?”
“She looks so soft, I just want to hug her~”
(Little soft bun, come sit next to me!)
…
Yueyue stood at the door, nervously searching for Baili Chen in the crowd.
His refined face stood out in the classroom, and it didn’t take her long to spot him. She made her way toward his seat.
When the other students saw her walking in his direction, the whispers started up again.
“Wait, she’s sitting there?”
“Wow, she’s brave.”
“That soft little girl, sitting next to the school bully? Isn’t she asking for trouble?”
“Su Su, come sit with me! I’ll kick my desk mate out!”
“I’ve never been this speechless…”
Baili Chen was lying with his head down on the desk. Su Yueyue wasn’t sure if he was asleep or not.
After a moment of hesitation, she quietly sat down next to him, wondering whether to say hello.
She remembered her mother telling her when she was little that she should always be polite.
Just as she was about to speak, the boy suddenly raised his head, looking at her with a hint of confusion and irritation. He clearly didn’t want her sitting next to him.
“Brother… hello…” Yueyue said shyly, her voice barely above a whisper.
“I’m not your brother,” Baili Chen said coldly, with no hint of warmth in his voice.
In truth, he didn’t dislike Su Yueyue, but he wasn’t particularly fond of her either. He found her a bit slow and naïve, with an innocent look that made her seem somewhat clueless.
He even wondered if her beauty was something she had “traded” for a lack of brains.
“But…”
Before Yueyue could finish her sentence, Baili Chen stood up and walked out of the classroom.
As soon as Baili Chen left, several students crowded around Su Yueyue.
“Little fairy, want to hang out after school?”
“Su Su, what’s your relationship with the school bully?”
“Where do you live?”
“Are your eyes naturally like that?”
“Hey, little fairy, come sit next to me?”
“Let’s go eat after school?”
“You guys can’t be a little more reserved?”
“Who are you calling reserved? Look at your drooling mouth!”
“Su Su, don’t mind these people. Want some candy?”
…
Surrounded by so many people, Su Yueyue felt a little overwhelmed, but she still answered their questions politely.
The morning passed quickly, and by afternoon, the lessons began.
When the bell rang, the homeroom teacher walked into the classroom with a math textbook.
“Wake up, anyone still sleeping! Wake up your desk mate,” the teacher called, slapping the desk.
Most of the students who had been dozing sat up, rubbing their eyes and blinking at the teacher.
Su Yueyue turned to look at her still-sleeping desk mate. After a moment of hesitation, she gently reached out and tapped his arm with her pale, pink-tipped finger.
When the boy didn’t respond, she tapped again and whispered, “Brother, class is starting.”
“What is it?” Baili Chen was suddenly jolted awake. He looked at her with annoyance in his eyes.
Su Yueyue was startled by his sudden movement and cautiously looked up at him.
His deep, dark eyes reflected her image—her soft face, long lashes, and delicate features, making her look like a porcelain doll.
“Class is starting,” she said softly, her voice so gentle it almost sounded like she was complaining.
Baili Chen looked at her cautious, worried expression, and for some reason, he felt a bit guilty. Without meaning to, he mumbled, “Mm.”
