We had our first snowfall in late October. As I walked back to the house with some wood in my arms to restock our fireplace one bright and cold afternoon, I heard shouts coming from the field behind the house. I placed the wood on the porch and then wandered around the back to see the cause of the ruckus. I came to a stop at the fence and observed Ret, Roscoe, and Danny throwing snowballs at each other. It was the most relaxed I’d seen Danny since he’d moved in here. Ret spied me watching them. “Join us,” he said as he made another snowball and unerringly hit Danny in the chest.
