Chapter Seven: Footsteps in the NightThat evening, Constanza was well enough to come home. Señora Gomez, waiting inside the house, met Luis as he returned from the meeting and rushed towards him, her face etched with concern. Before she even spoke, he raised his hand, smiling, “It's not plague, Señora Gomez, I promise you. You can rest easy.”
“Thank the Lord,” she said beaming, the colour returning to her cheeks. “If poor Constanza… Well, I'm sure you understand what I mean.”
He reached down and picked his sister up. She snuggled into his neck making tiny cooing noises and he kissed the top of her head. “You've been very kind, Señora Gomez. Thank you.”
“Don't mention it.” She stroked the little girl's hair. “If you need me, you know where to find me.”
“Thank you. Good night.”
