Chapter Twenty-One: The OgreThe light from the morning sun framed the huge figure in front of him, encircling his head in a kind of halo. Unable to discern the creature's features, Luis sensed its mouth was open, slavering, eager to feed. Luis pushed himself further into the tiny cave, arms held up to deflect any attack. The thing remained still, rooted to the ground, studying him. Luis wondered why the creature had not already attacked and devoured him, the fate no doubt of all the other unfortunates who had happened upon this place, or been taken by night time swoops into the village. The creature, full of anticipation for the feast to come, would extinguish his life in a wild orgy of sharp claws and vicious fangs. Hopes, dreams, plans, all gone to nothing. Mother, Constanza. Nothing.
