Chapter 8

Chapter 8 Helena I was so surprised when Maria came and told me that Mr. Salvatore said that he wanted to eat dinner with us. In a month I've been here, Summer and I's routine is the same. We will eat dinner and go to the playroom afterward. In that month, he had never once approached Summer, and now he decided to invite us for dinner with him. I hope this isn't just for tonight. I hope he's starting to see how beautiful his daughter is. Summer is an incredible girl; all the rebellious acts she did before I came were only to get her father's attention, but she didn't know that her actions only distanced herself from her father even more. Now, she doesn't miss his love much because I'm always by her side. Because he doesn't care about his kid, I was free to do anything with her. We went to the mall to eat ice cream and watch a movie, and I made it a routine to pick her up from school with Gilbert every day. It's so nice to see her smile every time she sees me at the entrance of the school. We were done with dinner, and Summer was looking at me. "Why did we have dinner with him tonight? He won't make you leave... right?" "No, love. Maybe he just doesn't want to eat pizza alone, so he invited us to eat with him." "Do I need to talk to him?" "If he asks you something, you answer it, because it's not nice to not answer." "But if he is not asking anything, I don't have to talk, right?" "Yes, if he isn't asking you, you don't need to talk to him." "Sit beside me, Lena." "Yes, I will." "I love you. I hope the bossy man will be nice and marry you so he can be my daddy, and you will be my mommy." "I think that would be hard, Summer. I am not the type that your father wants to marry." "Why? You are the most beautiful woman I have seen." "There are things you still don't understand, my love. For two people to be together, a pretty face is not enough." "He's too bossy. You know she doesn't like us, so there is no way you will end up together like the princess in stories." "Let's stop talking about it. Now let's prepare and wait for your father in the kitchen." We went to the kitchen holding each other's hands and sat down to wait for him, and it didn't take too long. He stared at Summer, and he didn't even hear me calling him. He finally heard me, and Summer talked to him as well. I tried to show her that he's not a bad person, that despite everything, he just doesn't know how to show it. I want to do what her grandma did and try to get Summer close to her father. Because I know deep inside him, there's love he feels for her. He just doesn't know how to face it and show it. He drowned himself in sadness because of his wife's death and set his daughter aside. But at our dinner together, with the way he couldn't keep his eyes off her, it's clear that his feelings are starting to change, and I am hoping that it is for the better. The dinner was quiet; the only words said were when he asked Maria to give them soda, but Summer and I did not drink it. He is shocked that a little girl like Summer doesn't like soda—one thing that proves that he doesn't know much about Summer's life. We ate all the pizza, and when I stood up to leave, he also did the same. "Helena, can we talk for a bit?" "Yes, sir. Let me just walk Summer to her room and let's meet in your office." He agreed, and I went with Summer to her room. She looked at me the moment we entered her room. "He won't kick you out, right?" "No, love, I made a promise to you, and I'll make sure to stay, and we'll be fine." "Okay. Can I play on my tablet?" "Of course." I kissed her head and left her room to go to Mr. Salvatore's office. I thought about why he wanted to see me. He won't fire me because Summer has changed. She no longer bothers him, and I didn't disobey any of his rules. Besides, he needs me to take care of Summer. I'm confident that he won't let me go. I stood by the door and knocked. I heard his voice letting me in, and I opened the door to see him sitting by his table. I noticed he didn't have a cold look on his face. In fact, his face looked clear. "Have a seat." "Thank you." "I called you here because it's been a month since you started working here, and on your contract, you need to rest for two days." "I don't really need it because I don't have any plans, and I have nowhere to be." "Don't you want to go somewhere?" "No. I don't have anyone." "You said you don't have a family, but don't you have friends?" "... no." He looked at me strangely, but to be honest, I have no family because the only one I can visit doesn't even want to see me, and I don't want to see Roger's face as well. "So, because you are not going anywhere on your day off, you will be free from looking after Summer for two days." "I don't mind these days off, and I also don't mind taking care of Summer. She's very excited, and I don't want to take that excitement from her." "I can tell that she has great trust in you. Out of all the nannies who came here, you are the only one who tamed her." "Summer is a beautiful little girl. She's bubbly, playful, and smart, but she lacks love. She had a reference to love, and she loved her mother. After losing her, all the nannies that came here are just worried about fulfilling her demands to accompany her in her daily routine without worrying about her feelings, without thinking that she needs a little attention." "You're right. The nannies only want to do their obligations. That is my requirement. Because I thought that is what she needed." "She's young, Mr. Salvatore, and she needs love and attention. You have no idea how the lack of affection and love can change someone. That is why there are many teenagers who grow up rebellious and get involved in bad things. Our loved ones who should be there for us and refuse to love or accept us are the most painful thing someone can feel. He looked at me and didn't say anything. I knew I overstepped my boundaries, and I knew I shouldn't put my feelings in this matter, but I want him to see that he can change and give the love that his daughter deserves before she grows up, and the time that is lost cannot be brought back again. What happened to me might happen to her. I don't have any kind of love in my life, and my mother doesn't even consider me her daughter. If he does not change, Summer will also have the same fate, and nothing will change. We grew up with the hope that someday our parents will love us, and when we find that this will not happen, the part of our heart reserved for that love closes and that person is forgotten in our lives.
