“I think I should take my leave now, so that you can rest. I heard you telling your mom that you have to go to work early tomorrow.” Owen said.
“Oh yeah, that’s right.”
“Do you mind going on a lunch date with me again tomorrow. Or maybe every day?” He asked, with a very soft voice which caused my heart to flutter.
“Yes, we can go on a lunch date tomorrow. But I am not sure about every day.” I replied, with a smile on my face.
“Alright, I’ll wait for you in front of your work place by two.” Owen said.
“Okay, good.” I agreed.
“Goodnight beautiful. I had fun with you today.” He said, as he opened his arms for a hug.
“Goodnight, i had fun too. Thanks for coming.” I said and I hugged him.
“I should be the one thanking you for inviting me.” He said, as we withdrew from the hug.
After Owen left, I cleaned up the plates we used to eat and went to bed.
I woke up very early the following morning. Waking up very early was always hard for me because I always needed more sleep. But I have to do it so as to beat the traffic.
I quickly took my shower and made pancakes for breakfast. I ate them with the pancake syrup I had in the house, before heading out.
Chief was the first person I saw when I entered the station.
“Good morning, Hazel, please meet me in my office.” He said, before he turned back and walked towards his office.
“Good morning chief.” I greeted, as I trailed behind him. Wondering why he wanted to see me. Maybe a new assignment? I wondered.
“A 9-year-old girl was kidnapped in her parent’s house. They were attacked around 2AM this morning and the parents reported this to us an hour ago. Your job is to find the girl. And please Hazel, do not do anything that’ll put her life in danger. I’ll forward the details to you now.” He explained, immediately I entered his office.
I was perplexed when I heard the news, but I managed to say, “Okay Chief.”
“You can go now.” He dismissed me.
‘People are so cruel; I wonder what the little girl will be going through.’ I thought, as I walked to my desk.
On reaching my desk, a notification popped up on my phone’s screen. It was an email from my boss. ‘That was fast.’ I thought.
I picked up a pen and wrote down the content in my notepad. The only information provided was the girl’s name which is Mary Samuel, her house address and time of abduction. I had to do the rest on my own.
I grabbed the notepad and pen and I put it inside my bag.
Knowing that the victim’s house was a bit far and I might have to spend hours looking for a cab that is headed towards that direction, I decided to borrow Tunde’s car.
I walked up to him and greeted, with a smile on my face. “Tunde, good morning.”
“Good morning, how are you doing today?” He asked.
“I am fine, thank you. I was wondering if you could lend me your car.” I asked and scratched my head.
“Where do you want to go with it?” He asked and raised his brows.
I showed him the address on my phone and after looking at it for few seconds, he said. “Oh, new assignment, good luck.”
He tugged the keys out of his bag and gave it to me.
“Thank you, man.” I said and headed out.
The drive to the victim’s house was long. It took me one hour. When I got to the house, I knocked on the gate. A man that appeared to be in his early 30’s opened the gate.
“Who are you looking for.” The man asked sternly.
I pulled out my ID card and showed it to him. “I am a detective and I am here to see Mr. and Mrs. Samuel.”
“Oh, sorry ma’am. Please come in. They are inside.” He said, as he opened the gate wide, giving me access to enter inside.
The house was huge, there were about ten cars parked in the parking space. Everything about the house screamed wealth. As the man led me to the main building, I wondered what their source of income was.
“Who is this? And why didn’t you ask for permission before bringing a stranger into the house?” A woman barked at the man that took me inside.
She must be Mrs. Samuel, I thought. Her eyes were swollen and her face was pale. It seemed like she had been crying.
She turned to look at me, but before she could say anything, I quickly flashed my ID card at her. “I am a detective; my name is Hazel and I am here to help you find your daughter.” I said.
After informing her, her angry expression quickly changed to a sad one.
“Welcome. Let me call my husband. Please have a seat.” She said, then gestured at the couches in the living room, before she turned around and ascended the flight of stairs.
After she was out of sight, I looked around the living room. I couldn’t resist the urge to gaze at the beautiful paintings hanging on the walls.
While I was still taking in the beauty that surrounded me, I heard a man’s voice say, “Good morning detective.”
I turned to look at whose voice it was, and I saw Mrs. Samuel descending the stairs with a man. Without introduction, I already knew who the man was.
“Good morning Mr. Samuel.” I greeted.
“Please, have a seat.” He said, as he gestured at the couches in the living room.
I strode to where the couches were and I sat down on a one-seater couch. They both sat down on the two-seater couch that was next to the one I sat on.
Without wasting much time, I dived into questioning them. “As you already know, I am in charge of your daughter’s case. And in this regard, I’ll need your full cooperation so that we’ll be able to find your daughter.”
“We promise to tell you everything we know.” Mr. Samuel assured.
“They came in around 2AM right? What were you all doing at that time?” I asked, as i tugged out my pen and notepad from my bag, to write down necessary information.
“We were all sleeping.” Mr. Samuel responded.
“How many were they and did you see their faces?” I asked.
He shook his head and said “They were five in number and they were all masked up. so, we couldn’t see their faces.”
“Did they steal or carry anything?” I asked.
“The only thing they carried was my daughter.” Mrs. Samuel chimed in.
“Did they touch anything? so we could run a fingerprint test.” I asked.
“They were all wearing gloves.” Mr. Samuel said.
“Before this incident, did you have a fight with anyone?” I asked.
“No.” Mr. Samuel said.
“What of you Mrs. Samuel?” I asked, as I turned to look at her. “I need you to think deep.”
she looked into an empty space, as if she was trying to think. After few seconds, she shook her head and said. “No.”
I opened my mouth to say something, but my words died on my lips when Mr. Samuel’s phone rang.
“Who is calling.” I asked, when I realized that he was hesitating to pick the call.
“No caller ID.” He replied.
“Pick it and put in on loud speaker.” I said.
“If you want to see your daughter again, arrange 10 million Naira before tomorrow.” A man’s voice said, from the other end of the phone.
