“Congratulations on the successful completion of the murder case Hazel.” Chief said, when I entered his office. “Thank you chief.” I said and smiled. “Until we find another assignment for you, you can just enjoy your free time.” He said, then dismissed me. “You can go.” “Thank you chief.” I said, before leaving his office. When I got to my corner, I sat down by my desk and started reading a book since I had no work to do. Few minutes into reading the book, Owen’s call came in. ‘He probably wants to remind me about our date tonight. Is it even a date?’ I thought, before picking up. “Hello beautiful. How are you doing today?” He said over the phone. “I’m good. How are you?” I asked. “I’m good. Had lunch yet?” He asked. “No, I haven’t.” “Would you mind if I take you out on a lunch date?” He requested and I found myself blushing so hard. “I would love to, but I’m at work right now.” I said. “We could eat at the restaurant close to your work place. I don’t mind going there.” “Sure.” I agreed. “Alright. I will be on my way. I’ll call you when I am outside.” He said. “okay.” I said, and hung up. “Hazel, want to go grab lunch with me?” Tunde asked, as he approached me. “Oh, sorry I have plans already.” I said, rejecting his offer. “Okay.” He said and turned back. He looked a little bit sad. I had always known that Tunde likes me, but he has been too shy to profess his feelings for me. I’ve caught him times without number, throwing glances at me. He had been so nice to me and i was glad that he hasn’t made any attempt to confess his feelings, because I would have straight up rejected him. And that might have affected our friendship. Minutes later, Owen’s call came in. But, I didn’t bother to pick up, because I knew he was outside already, that was why he was calling. I leapt to my feet and trudged outside. His car was parked just outside the station. Immediately he sighted me, he came down from his car and walked towards me. “Hello, beautiful.” He said, as he opened his arms for a hug. “Hi.” I said, as i hugged him. “So where should we go to?” He asked. “There is a Chinese restaurant over there.” I said, as I pointed towards a direction. He turned to look at where I was pointing at. “Let’s go there.” He said and held my hand. When he touched my hand, current passed through me. It felt like I had touched an exposed wire. I couldn’t explain that feeling and why I felt that way. I wanted to withdraw my hand, but I couldn’t bring myself to. I loved the way I felt and I wondered if he felt that way too. When we got to the restaurant, we ordered Chinese rice with chicken and Coca-Cola to top it. “How is work?” Owen asked, as he tried to cut a piece from the chicken on his plate. “Well, work is not stressful today. I just finished solving a murder case and I have not been assigned to do another job.” I replied. “Keep up the good work. People like you make our world safer.” He said. “I disagree with you on that, I only caught the culprit after the deed had been done.” I protested. “Catching him means stopping him from committing other crimes.” He pointed out. “I agree.” I said, feeling defeated. We finished the rest of our food in silence and he walked me back to the station. When I entered the station, I saw Lizzy- my office bestie, approaching me with a big smile on her face. “Is that your new man?” She asked. “Oh Lizzy. No, he is not.” I denied. “Then who is he? Your friend? I mean he is hot. If you are not interested in him, please pass him over.” She said and winked. I shook my head and smiled, as I walked down to my desk, without giving her any response, wondering why my heart skipped a beat when she talked about passing him over. There was no work to do, so I closed early and went home. By the time I got home, I was very hungry. so, I decided to make macaroni for dinner. I dropped my bag on the couch and walked to the kitchen. While I was slicing onions, Owen’s call came in. “Hello beautiful, are you still at work?” Owen said, when I picked up. “No, I’m at home.” I said. “Have you eaten?” He asked. “No. But, I’m cooking Macaroni right now. Have you eaten?” I asked. “No, I haven’t eaten. But I am about to order something.” He said. “Why don’t you come over for dinner.” I offered. The words left my mouth before I could even stop myself. I couldn’t believe that I had just invited him to my house. “Are you sure?” He asked. He didn’t wait for my response when he said. “I’ll be on my way.” I could feel how excited he was over the phone. “okay.” I said and hung up. I was still cooking, when i heard a knock on the door. ‘That must be Owen.’ I thought, as i strode to the door and opened it. My jaw dropped when I saw the person standing before me. It was my mom! “Mum! what are you doing here?” I yelled. I was shocked, I was not expecting to see her. Especially not when I was expecting Owen. “Don’t you want me here?” She asked, as she raised her brow. “No, that’s not it. It’s just that you didn’t tell me you were coming.” I said. “Well, can’t a mother surprise her baby?” She said and raised her brow. “you know I don’t like surprises mother.” I said and rolled my eyes. “So, should I go back?” She asked. “No, please come in.” I said, as I opened the door wide and stepped aside, giving her access to enter. Just as I was about to shut the door close, Owen appeared in front of me. ‘I’m doomed.’ I said, inwardly. I didn’t even get the chance to tell him not to come anymore. I could feel sweat forming on my palm and my stomach tightened. "Oh, who is this young man?" My mom asked, as she walked back to the door. At that point, I didn't know what to say. Is he my friend or just someone I know? I was confused, but I had to tell her something. "Mom, this is Owen. My friend." I said, quickly. “Nice to meet you, Owen." She said, as she stretched her hand for a handshake. "Nice to meet you ma." Owen replied, nervously, as he shook her hand. "Maybe I should just come back another day." Owen said to me. He sounded shy. I was about to tell him “Okay." When my mom chimed in. "No, please come in." She said quickly. We both locked our eyes and i nodded in approval. "Oh my God." I screamed and ran to the kitchen. I had forgotten that I was cooking. Thank God the whole food didn't burn. I served the macaroni into three plates and I took them to the living room, where Owen and my mom were both seated. Upon entering the living room, Owen was saying "I studied medicine and surgery, but I don't practice it. I am a software engineer." "Oh nice. So, you make a lot of money. How much do you make per month?" My mom asked. "Mom!!!" I yelled, then I continued. "You shouldn't be asking him about something so personal." "I didn't even realize you were standing there. Thank God you didn't burn the whole house." My mom joked and laughed. "It's not funny." I muttered and rolled my eyes. "Please enjoy your food." I said, as I handed the plates to them. We all ate in silence. "I see the way you two look at each other, are you sure you are just friends?" My mom asked, just as we finished eating. That was when it dawned on me that, I might actually like Owen. Not just like, but love.
