GINEVRA June 1912 So many of the island"s people so often complained about it, about its many steps, but I never minded the journey from Newport to Providence. It was often not the easiest; the short steamboat ride from the pier in Newport over to Wickford on the mainland of Rhode Island could be brutal in the harshness of winter. Then it was on to a train for a short ride from the Wickford pier to the Wickford Junction Railroad Station and then, at last, the final leg of the trip from Wickford into Providence by yet another train. There were times when the nearly one-hour journey was the favorite of my day. I had no one to take care of, worry about, save myself.
