Glossary
Brief definitions, mostly about musical terminologies and jargons. Words can be found in the story, especially words with asterisk (*) to indicate that it can be found in this section.
• Damgeen. Jargons in this form indicates its own definition in Damgeen High School Musical based on its culture and conventions.
A
Ability
• Damgeen. One of the PLARA categories which focuses on the quality of every superstar in terms of music; musical talent, skill, ability, capability, and other opportunities.
Application
• Damgeen. One of the PLARA categories that entails the application of music in real and/or everyday life.
Ascending
Moving upward; rising.
B
Backline
The musical equipment that is set up on stage. The term is used when referring to the gear owned and provided by the venue.
Baton
A thin stick used by a conductor to direct an orchestra or choir.
Bongo (drum)
One of a pair of small drums that are played with the hands.
Busk
To play music for tips. Usually performed outdoors, ideally around people with money.
C
Clavinet
An electronic keyboard instrument, an electronically amplified clavichord with a distinctive bright staccato sound.
Crescendo
A gradual, steady increase in loudness or force.
A musical passage characterized by such an increase.
D
Dark voice
A technique and style by singing in a naturally lower-pitched.
Dinner set
A compilation of songs performed at a gig that creates a relaxed atmosphere.
Doxology
A hymn or form of words containing an ascription of praise to God.
E
Egress
The act of going out; exit.
F
Fanfare
A short, showy, piece of music usually played for a special event. It is often played to announce the arrival of an important person.
• Damgeen. Traditional rites of initiation for new students called rookie to showcase and introduce their talents and skills; composed of two categories: Show It and Mosh Pit.
Flashmob
A large public gathering at which people perform an unusual and seemingly random act and then disperse.
Following
The fan base of an artist or group.
Front man
The lead singer. Sometimes it's a woman.
Fusion genre
A music genre which combines two or more genres, although it usually is used to refer to jazz fusion. For example, rock and roll originally developed as a fusion of blues, gospel and country music.
G
Gear
Musical equipment.
Gear head
Someone who knows a lot of details about all kinds of musical equipment and likes to talk about it.
Genius (musical genius)
Someone who has musical ideas of a very high quality, whether original or interpretative, and the ability to execute ideas at a very high level.
• Damgeen. The third to the most outstanding group or individual superstar/s; third rank.
Gig
Anytime you perform music live, usually involving some monetary compensation.
Gig bag
A padded bag for the storage and transport of musical instruments, especially guitars.
Glissando
Rapid scale passage produced by sliding over keys or strings e.g. piano, harp, violin, trombone.
Green room
A room in a theater or studio in which performers can relax when they are not performing.
Groudie
Combination of groupie and roadie; an ardent follower of the band, consistent attendee, and carrier of equipment in and out of the venue.
H
Hack
A musician that doesn't play well but acts as though they do.
Hail
To cheer, salute, or greet; welcome.
Haribol nitai gaur
A mantra meditation that can be repeated by chanting or hearing the words "haribol nitai gaur." This mindful repetition of a sacred mantra is believed to help refresh and purify the heart and mind of people; good way to start and end a day.
Harmonization
The chordal accompaniment to a line or melody: "Using chords and melodies together, making harmony by stacking scale tones as triads"
House
Can refer to the people in the venue, or the area where there could be people in the venue.
I
Impresario
A person who organizes and often finances concerts, plays, or operas.
Improvisation
Something that is improvised, especially a piece of music, drama, etc., created without preparation.
Instrumentalist
A person who plays a musical instrument.
J
Jam
An extended musical passage with improvisational performances.
Junk band
Band creating music by using recycled resources and materials.
L
Learnings
• Damgeen. One of the PLARA categories that focuses on adequate learnings and knowledge about one's craft; measures one's commitment and activeness inside and outside the classrooms.
Lineup
A particular order or disposition of persons or things as arranged or drawn up for action, inspection, etc.
Load in
The moment in time that the crew or band shows up to unload and set up the equipment.
Load out
To carry musical equipment out of the venue.
M
Maestro
A person who is very skilled at playing or conducting music.
• Damgeen. 1. The second to the most outstanding group or individual superstar/s; second rank.
2. General term to address the higher-ups and music teachers in DHSM.
Mains
The speakers facing the audience along with the system of amps, equalizers, and effects attached to them.
Master
• Damgeen. The segment of superstars who studies at Damgeen for a longer time. Compare to rookie.
Mosh pit
An area in front of a stage where very physical and rough dancing takes place, especially at a rock concert.
Musicality
Knowledge, skill, and artistic sensitivity in performing music.
N
Noodling
Playing nothing in particular on an instrument. Heard often in music stores and when someone else is trying to sound check.
O
Orchestra
A group of instrumentalists, especially one combining strings, woodwind, brass, and percussion sections and playing classical music.
P
PA system (public address system)
A combination of electronic devices that makes sound audible via loudspeakers to many people, as in an auditorium or out of doors.
Patter
The talk with which an entertainer accompanies a routine.
Pentatonic scale
Also called five-note scale or five-tone scale, musical scale containing five different tones.
Percussion
Musical instruments that you play by hitting them with your hand or an object such as a stick.
Prima donna
A musician who feels and acts entitled.
PLARAmeter
• Damgeen. 1. A high-tech wrist device used by DHSM's students as a tool to keep in track with their merit points gained throughout a set of long-year activities.
2. Composed of five categories: (1) Personality, (2) Learnings, (3) Ability, (4) Rendition, (5) Application; believed to be the 5 core qualities and traits that every musician should possess.
3. Composed of two ordinary colors: (1) Blue for junior high, (2) Black for senior high.
And three special and exclusive colors for Triad of the Year: (1) Purple for Genius of the Year, (2) Silver for Maestro of the Year, (3) Gold for Virtuoso of the Year.
Personality
• Damgeen. One of the PLARA categories which includes perseverance and modesty.
R
Reggae
A style of popular music with a strongly accented subsidiary beat, originating in Jamaica.
Rendition
An interpretation, as a role or a piece of music.
• Damgeen. One of the PLARA categories which means the creativity of superstars in interpreting their music, themselves, and their style.
Reprise
The repetition or reiteration of simply any repeated section, such as is indicated.
Rider
A document that a band, musician or other performer will send over to the booker relating to their requirements for performance
Rig
A collective term for a musician's equipment.
Roadie
Person that works with a group that specializes in carrying in and out of a venue, helps the band set up and tear down, and travels with the band.
Rookie
Someone who has just started doing a job and does not have much experience, especially someone who has just joined the army or police force.
• Damgeen. A newly enrolled student (or superstar), mostly Grade 7 and 8, having their first year in Damgeen High School Musical.
S
Saxophone
A member of a family of metal wind instruments with a single-reed mouthpiece, used especially in jazz and dance music.
Scat
A vocal improvisation without any actual words.
Set
The period of time a performer is on stage.
Set list
A groupings or songs to be played during a performance.
Spike
A marking that is used to show the correct position for set pieces, furniture, actors and other items which move during the course of a performance and are required to stop or be placed in a specific location.
Staging
Planning the proper location for each individual on stage.
Superstar
A person, as a performer or athlete, who enjoys wide recognition, is esteemed for exceptional talent, and is eagerly sought after for his or her service.
• Damgeen. Term used to address a student in DHSM. Hence, the entire study body is called superstars.
Supreme Organization of Leaders in Music and Academe (SOLMA)
• Damgeen. Considered as the highest student organization in DHSM that provides assistance, leadership, and service to serve the student body in terms of music and academic areas.
T
Triad
A group or set of three connected people or things; a chord of three notes played simultaneously.
Triad of the Year
• Damgeen. Top three groups or individuals with the highest and most outstanding record for a certain school year. Composed of Genius, Maestro, and Virtuoso of the Year as 3rd, 2nd, and 1st group or individual superstars, respectively.
Trombone
A large brass wind instrument with straight tubing in three sections, ending in a bell over the player's left shoulder, different fundamental notes being made using a forward-pointing extendable slide.
Trumpet
A brass musical instrument with a flared bell and a bright, penetrating tone.
Turntable
The rotating disk that spins the record on a phonograph.
V
Vamping
To play a line or riff that can be repeated to fill up time; to kill time speaking on the mic.
Vertical
A weekly gig at a particular venue; they line up vertically on a calendar.
Virtuoso
A person with highly skilled in music or another artistic pursuit; who is extremely skilled at something, especially at playing an instrument or performing.
• Damgeen. The most outstanding group or individual superstar/s; first rank.
Vocal range
The total span of musically pitches that a singer can produce.
