10 He was in a long tunnel that wormed its way into a hillside. It was damp and it stank of death and Ralph tried to run but he couldn’t because the blood that ran along the ground was so sticky that he could not even lift his foot, despite straining every muscle, groaning with the effort. The blood clung to the sole of his shoe like impact adhesive. Gripping his calf with both hands, he pulled with all his might. As it slowly lifted, the sole peeled off like a banana skin. He lost his balance and fell, just as a great black thing bounded down the tunnel from out of the depths, its mouth huge and gaping, its teeth like great butcher’s knives glinting in the half-light.
