Chapter One

“Olivia! Olivia!” “Hi, Amber!” “Have you seen the poster?” “What poster?” “The play audition?” “Where?” “All over!” “So, what about it?” “Like duh, you can audition! You have a very nice voice.” “But....” “It’s been your dream since forever!” “I know but what play?” “Peter Pan, and you can audition for Wendy or her mom Mary.” Then, my other friend, Khrystel came from her class. “Hi Olivia, Hi Amber!” “Hi, Khrystel.” “What are you guys talking about?” “Amber was telling me about the play Peter Pan.” And her eyes widened and her voice excited. “Oh, I saw that. And I heard earlier that the director is the guy you always looked at the canteen.” Although I exactly knew who she was talking about, I just denied, to drop the topic. “I don’t look at anybody in the canteen.” Then they looked at each other, smirked, and smiled, making faces towards me. Amber said this with one eyebrow up. “Yes, you do, girl.” “It’s the hunk guy with cute dimples and chin.” “Which guy?” And I denied it again. I hope my nose won’t grow longer each time like Pinocchio. “Oh, I don’t know his name, he is handsome but not too famous to make his name known to everyone.” “Oh right, Khrystel, we saw Olivia stare at this blue-eyed hunk for several times, right?” Then they made that funny face again. “So what’s his name Olivia?” “I am not so sure what you’re talking about.” In my mind, Pinocchio has been running and the thought of his nose growing long. “Oh c’mon.” Then my friend, Stephen came. We were all classmates while we were in Grade seven to ten but separated when we chose our courses in Grade 11 and 12. “Hi, girls!” “Hi!” “Have you seen Julia?” And Amber mimicked Stephen. We never liked how Julia treats Stephen. They became classmates since grade 11. We always tell Stephen to stop courting her but he keeps on following her desires, making him like a dummy. “How long have you been courting that girl?” “I am not so sure. Almost a year maybe. We’re having a review session for our math.” “C’mon, Stephen, she’s just using you for her math assignments.” “Maybe, but I love how she looks at me. She has this charming aura that magnets my heart.” “Duh, she’s a fake.” Stephen just brushed off the topic ao we won’t nag him to stop courting Julia and he went on with a new topic, which involves me. In a nerdy style of talking, he boasted. “By the way, I saw this new poster regarding a play.” And the two girls smirked, knowing what Stephen did was to change the topic. “We were talking about that.” “Do you know who the director is, Stephen?” “Oh, I didn’t see that.” “It’s not written in the audition poster, but I saw one girl pointing at him and saying he’s the director of the play.” “How does he look like?” “Less handsome than me, I guess.” “Stephen!” “Blue eyes, firm chest, right muscles in his arms, and tasseled brown hair.” “That’s him, right Olivia?” And she looked at me with the ‘I told you’ look. “Are you sure, Khrystel?” “Yes, Amber. It’s the guy.” “And what about this guy? what’s the fuzz?” And my girl friends both looked at me with ‘we know you have a crush with this guy look.’ “It’s the guy that Olivia has a crush on, Stephen.” “What? really?” “You know the name of Olivia’s crush?” “You have a crush?” Stephen looked at me like I was somebody from another planet. And my face suddenly turned red and heated the skin on my face. “You’re blushing!” “I am not.” And everybody laughed at me as I blushed and smiled at them. Then my hunk crush, the one we were talking about suddenly popped out of nowhere. He looked at us, smiled, we had an eye to eye though afar, then he walked a little far from us towards his car. He has a metallic blue Toyota Corolla, which he looked more handsome with. Amber nudged me and pointed to everybody with her lips that the guy with who I have a crush is walking by. And all of my other friends looked at him. I felt the urge to look at him again and smile. When he looked at us, I looked somewhere else so he won’t see me looking at him, but his stare didn’t lasts because he looked away immediately and walked away. “Oh, that’s MB.” Stephen whispered to all of us in a closed circle. “Embie?” “Yah, that’s what I hear them call him.” “So what can his real name be? Embolistic?” And all of us laughed. Then, we heard his engine start and he drove pass by us. We all stared at him as he drove away from us. Then everyone laughed again because of the names we thought. After some minutes of laughing. “Olivia, get an application for the audition.” “I will think about it.” Khrystel cupped my face with her hands. “I am your best friend, we all are. You have been dreaming this for years. You sang better than the casts of all the school plays we had since we became freshman” “Yah, don’t think anymore, do it.” “Thanks, guys. I will ask my parents. There would be a lot of practice and days of going home late, I need their permission. “Think about it! Remember, it’s your dream!” “Hey guys, Julia is here. See you tomorrow.” “See you Stephen.” “I hate that girl. I can see how she’s using Stephen.” “Hey, my mom is here. See you tomorrow!” “Bye Amber!” “We better start walking, Olivia.” “Let’s go Khrystel.” “Stephen is really funny. But the name Embie is funnier.” And we both laughed. Then we quieted while we walked. “Can I admit something to you, Khrystel?” “Sure, what is it?” “Promise not to laugh or tell anybody yet.” “Of course.” “I don’t look that pretty for a stage play.” And my friend halted and looked at me sternly with both her arms on each side of her waist. “Who said that? You maybe a little chubby, but your face is perfect and your voice is like an angel.” “You’re saying that because you’re my friend.” We started to walk again. I looked at the floor, thinking I may not be able to do it. “I am not. I am your friend and I will tell you frankly if you don’t fit the role. But you do!” I shrugged my shoulders and smirked. “I am not sure about that.” “Okay, look at it this way. It’s just an audition. What if you make it?” “What if I don’t?” “At least you tried, you won’t just be dreaming about it.” I just gave a smirk. “So, do you really have a crush on that guy?” “He’s kinda cute but....” And I shrugged my shoulder and gave an ‘I don’t care’ expression. “But what?” “Nothing.” “Hey, I never saw him with any girl, everrr!” “I know, but it doesn’t mean he can be my boyfriend.” “I never said that. It’s just a maybe.” And we finally came to Khrystel’s house. “See you tomorrow.” “Okay, I will run inside now.” “Bye!” And we both waved at each other.
