Chapter 1The crunch of gravel from the bulldozer sounded over the chants of the protesters. Ashleigh Wilson c****d her head to the side as she noticed a white van pull up alongside one of the brightly colored construction vehicles. Those trucks and steamrollers, as large and oppressing as they could be, were expected at the protest today. The white van was not. Ashleigh quirked a brow before glancing back to her other protesters chained to the border of trees around the beginning of the Sandy Pines forest, one of the last remaining mixed climate regions in the Southwestern eco-zone of Kingston, Ontario.
