Chapter 13 - Flynn

“Did you feel that?” Jonathan jumped up, wings outstretched. He slammed the book he was reading. “How could I not?” I said, sitting up straight. “A witch, and a powerful one at that.” “Did you sense a location? All I got was a surge of power. The vibration running through my body was strong, but I couldn’t pinpoint where it was coming from.” I shook my head. “No.” Jonathan walked to the window. “I’m going out, see if I can pick up anything. You see what you can get and call me.” He took to the skies. I sat, my attention focused on the ripples of magic coursing through my body. The location had been blocked somehow, like this witch was in a void or something. That can’t be right. How can a new witch be blocked? It doesn’t make any sense.  I stood and shook myself. Jonathan and I had been going through the books on the table. We hadn’t found anything yet, and only one book remained. Sensing new witches was something we’d always been able to do. It was a way for us to access and find the one who held the power to break the curse. Of course, Jonathan had always seen to it that they never got the chance to break it. He had more blood on his hands than I cared to imagine. He was quicker, sensed things before I did. Another disadvantage of being trapped in this body. A light witch was destined to break the curse, which meant Jonathan identified her before I could. The demon essence in me blocked the light.  What if he finds her first and destroys her? He said he was going to help end this once and for all, but what if he was lying? I couldn’t take that chance. I spread my wings and took off after him. At least finding him was easy. The curse bound us so we could always sense each other. Jonathan hovered over the northern continent. “I can’t get a location, but she’s down there somewhere.” “That’s awfully vague,” I said. “I know, but it’s all I got. This witch is shielded somehow, and from what I can tell, it’s not a baby or young child. This witch is older.” I nodded. “That’s what I’m getting, too. Do you think she’s the one?” “I don’t know. Do you get the feeling there’s something strange about her magic?” I knew what he was referring to. I had felt it. A battle building, a darkness. My demon senses lit up when they caught it, and I had to fight in order to stop that part of me from exploding. “Did you sense anything strange, Flynn?” “No,” I lied. “We need a way to narrow down the location. We’re going to have to mingle, brother.” He winked at me. He knew I hated being part of the human world. It never turned out well. I couldn’t disguise myself. People took one look at me and cringed. It was as if their darkest fears erupted in their mind. Jonathan saw the look on my face. “Listen. I’ll do the groundwork. You can stay hidden.” “Fine.”  I followed him as we blended into the air and descended, silently landing outside a hotel. “Where are we?” “I don’t know yet. Let’s just check into this hotel and see what we can find. Let me do the talking, Flynn.”
