To say Benjamin was amazed would be wrong. He looked ready to pass out as he gazed up at me with a look that made my smug smile to widen even more. I leaned back in my chair, my legs sprawling over each other, the look of victory on my face only glowed brighter.
"How did you do this?" He asked and I just smiled at his shocked expression, shrugging my shoulders.
"What else can I say, Benjamin, I am quite talented." His jaw ticked when I said his first name but he didn't comment anything on that, not that he was in any position to do, either.
"You broke into Carter's system in five days, Miss Green. I am impressed." I shook my head, leaning on his table, my elbows pressing against the cold glass as I smiled sweetly at him.
"Four days, Benjamin. It took me only four days to break into his system." I corrected him and he nodded his head, his eyes trained on me as he studied me under his scrutinizing gaze.
"Hmm, right, Miss Green. But don't you think the amount you're demanding is quite too much?" He asked, raising his now grey brows and I again leaned back, the smile still intact on my face. I know much more than your worthless rear.
"With the services I am rendering you, this cost is only the quarter of what people would give me in the hub."
"And who would have the guts to go against me?" He asked, with almost a threatening edge to his voice.
"Well what can I say, Benjamin, people like Carter are willing to pay me the amount triple of what I have offered you." His eyes narrowed dangerously as his jaw ticked in visible anger. Carter was his biggest rival now. After he killed my mother.
"And you think Carter will crack a deal with you after he'll know you broke into his system for me?"
I laughed, shaking my head at his foolishness. He was too naive for a Mafia leader. He was getting angrier with every passing second and nothing was much more hilarious than his face at the moment.
"Easy with your anger, Benjamin. Don't want your nerve to burst open at this age, now do we?" His glare only turned lethal but that didn't faze me. "And coming back to your question, if I break into your system for Carter, he'd gladly forget what I did to him. Money and power doesn't bow down in front of anyone, now does it?"
"Be cautious with what you say to me, Miss Green. I don't take disrespect very lightly. This maybe your last words if you keep continuing to disrespect me."
And before I knew it his fingers had gripped my throat, enough to make it difficult for me to breathe. His grip increasing with every word. It took a lot in me not to wince in pain. It would definitely form a bruise till night.
But I was also a warrior. A warrior who never tasted defeat and I wasn't planning to taste it now, either. My knees kicked him in the shin and I didn't delay in pressing his face on the table with my knife closer to his eyeball. He went still because a movement of even an inch would cost him his eyeballs.
"Be cautious with what you do to me, Benjamin. I am not a person you shall mess with. Hacking isn't my only talent." With that I pulled my hand and knife away to let him breathe in relief. Fear swirled in his eyes as he took a step back from me warily and I lifted up the glass of water from the table and handed it out for him.
He gripped the glass in his trembling hands and I again plopped down on the plush chair, my eyes gazing at his now squirming frame. He looked hesitant for a while to speak but when he did, he couldn't keep himself from threatening me again.
"One day, Miss Green. One day you'll regret everything you did to me in this office today." He said as he gripped the newspaper kept on the side of his table before throwing it at me.
"Just like the girl in this newspaper, even you'll end up getting burned. Just like her, you'll be the headline too." He spat, hatred seeping his voice.
And the girl on the newspaper was me. It was the ashes of who I once used to be. The girl on the newspaper was Zara Larsson. They couldn't still find a single clue about my death, my accident— or let me rephrase my planned murder. I scoffed, my eyes burning with rage and unshed tears.
And this Elina Green had been waiting for the very day when she'll punish every damn murderer of Zara Larsson. I haven't been roaming impersonating like a woman that doesn't even exist, to die yet again.
I smiled bitterly at him, leaning against the table. "Then I'm glad that I am not Zara Larsson, Benjamin. She was weak and I am not. She died but I won't."
When he didn't say a word, I continued with the rage that kept palpating within me.
"I may or may not love so passionately, Benjamin. But always remember no one can keep up the relationship of hatred as I do. You'll end up regretting."
"I'll join the work from tomorrow. Until then auf Wiedersehen." (Goodbye)
And with that I left his office, leaving him fuming behind.
~~~~~
It was nearly night when I reached my neighborhood which was deadly silent as always. One thing you must know about my neighborhood is that it is either too silent or too violent; there is no in between in my neighborhood. I opened my door using the keys before turning the lights on.
I nearly screamed when I saw someone sitting on my sofa— practically sprawling over it. My heart was pounding in my ears, my body trembled at once. And the intruder was none other than Lucian Matthew. He looked at me, bored, as if he didn't just gave me a heart attack.
I glared at him as I took a step inside and his own eyes looking at me with the same intensity— or maybe with even more. Something inside me twisted with anger as he practically broke into my— okay, his house, sitting on the sofa as if it was okay to invade someone's privacy.
"What the hell are you doing here?" I asked and his lips curled up in a menacing curve, making the hair on my back to rise up at his sudden amusement.
"Waiting for you, sweetheart. What else?" I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath to calm my raging heart. He infuriates me like no one else does.
"Stop calling me that, Matthew." He rose his brow before he stood up, walking towards me.
He was wearing a worn up hoodie and a black faded jeans. His masculine smell suddenly felt so close to me as he stood only an inch away from me. The proximity with him pushed Elina Green inside and forced Zara Larsson to crawl out and Zara Larsson wasn't good with eye contacts or proximity.
The ring of his lower lip rolled as he was speaking and nothing ever distracted me as much as it did. But I quickly snapped out of it, taking a step back.
"Why? Weren't you the one who called me 'sweetheart' when you so generously rescued me, hm?" He asked, quoting the word sweetheart with his fingers. His voice was rough, almost like he was keeping his anger at bay.
"I didn't knew who you were back then! And you know what, you can keep this house to yourself. I'll find another place to live." When I stepped ahead to get my things, his hand gripped my wrist and pulled me back, making me collide with him.
I could feel my insides boiling in rage. Who the hell he think he is? I looked up to give him a piece of mind, but I couldn't speak anything. Not even a single word. Like his eyes made me forget everything. I kept staring in those pools of midnight which only got darker with every second. I could see his scar more clearly now and the Zara Larsson inside me wished to touch it, graze it. But Elina Green in me wished to dig my claws in them, drawing out the blood.
I saw his lips pulling up in a malicious curl as he tilted his head, looking at me like a predator look at its prey— with those predating eyes. I snapped out of his spell when he snorted, shaking his head, mockingly.
"Tch. Tch. But how will you get a house with that fake identity of yours, hm, Elina Green?" He whispered, making my heart to thud loudly inside my chest. The way his tone turned malevolent, I knew he was thinking of something really evil.
Does he know who I really am?
But how?
I licked my lips, before pulling up my courage to glare at him. He doesn't scare me. He doesn't scare me. I chanted inside my head as I jerked my hand of his grip and he smirked, releasing it easily. I grabbed his collar, burning holes in his eyes but he stood there, unaffected, increasing my anger even more.
"Why are you so adamant in proving me against my own identity, Lucian Matthew? And I don't need you or your house to protect me. I am very much capable of getting a house under my name." I lied through my teeth. I cannot. I need his house to hide myself until the correct time arrives. I can't let my truth be exposed before I avenge the death of my family and I.
And I won't let anyone ruin it. Be it the cops or the Assassin— Lucian Matthew himself.
"Oh, sweetheart, if you would've been capable enough of at least renting a house under your name, you wouldn't be here, after blackmailing me. No?" The ring on his lower lip rolled as he spoke with a venomous smile as he took a step forward, followed by many more while I took one step back, every time he took a step ahead.
No freaking wonder he is the smartest assassin in the town.
"Do not test my patience, Matthew. Else, I'd report you to the cops and you'll be behind the bars before you can even blink." I said, smiling sweetly, taking one step ahead. "Remember the posters and news which claims rewards on getting you caught. Tch. Tch."
His midnight eyes burned with anger. The fire inside his orbs flared as his lips curled in a dangerous snarl before he removed the gun from his waistband and pointed it directly on my forehead and my heart froze for a second. My eyes widened when he reloaded his gun, drying my mouth. Holy cow! He looked ready to murder me now.
"What, cat got your tongue, now, hm, Elina Green? No more threats to deliver? No more witty comments for me?" He said, raising his brow, sardonically. I didn't knew him, I didn't knew if he would really pull the trigger or not. And I had my revenge waiting for me.
"Are you forgetting, I am an assassin, sweetheart. I get paid to kill people. And my fingers don't tremble when people beg or plead me for their life. I have charges enough to get me the death penalty but you know what, Green? One more death won't make any difference. So I could just pull the trigger and watch you die and your cops won't do a s**t!" I gulped when he pressed the cold metal against my forehead, my eyes widened, waiting for him to shoot but he didn't. Instead he freaking smiled.
And I didn't knew what was more scary, the speech he just rewarded me with or the smile that held so many ways to torture me. And for the first time, Elina Green felt helpless. I wasn't scared of him. But provoking him wasn't the bestest idea considering the mission I was working on.
"But where would be the fun in killing you when I can torture you, no? You see Elina Green, this is my house. And you're under my mercy. And since I have no murders to plan for a while, I'll be staying with you from now on." He said, tucking his gun back in his waistband and I looked at him, a little relieved but more tensed. Death looked better than living with him.
"I am not staying with you." I gritted out but he just smiled, raising his left brow as he let out a dark chuckle that passed shiver down my spine.
"You don't have an option, Elina Green. I told you, blackmailing me wasn't the best choice. I don't know about hell or heaven past death but I'll surely grace you with the hell in this life itself. I'll be your hell from today, sweetheart." He dragged the last word, making my heart to hammer against my ribcage. Just kill me, already, Lord.
I didn't had any choice but to comply. But as much as he was in power now, I didn't want him to know. I didn't wish for him to have an upper hand on me. The only weapon I was left with was pretence. The only thing I am so good at it. So I smiled, holding my head up and his smile suddenly dropped. What was he thinking I would do? Cry to him? Plead him not to make my life a hell when my life is already dead and in hell?
"You know what they say, Matthew? An established criminal is dangerous but a hidden criminal, they are treacherous. You'll never know what I have for you, Lucian Matthew. And when you'll think, you're winning, I'll pull your face down the mud. Mark. My. Words."
"We'll see. Who'll be in the mud and who'll be the one in power. I run this city, Green. I run this state. I run the underworld. And you are nothing but an inexperienced hacker. You can reach the King but only to bow down but you can't be the King. I rule the jungle, I create my own rules and you can't win in my own game."
When I didn't say a word, he nodded towards the kitchen before again plopping down on the sofa, flipping through the channels of the television, which wasn't there before. He must have installed it when I was out. Sneaky bastard.
"Cook me the dinner. Shouldn't keep your doyen waiting." I gritted my jaw at his dominating words. Only if I wouldn't have been in so desperate need of the house, I would've shown him, who I really am.
"Oh, and put more salt in my food." Oh, I will.
~~~~~~
I was working on my laptop, trying to work on my own system. On Zara Larsson's system. I knew only two of my murderers— Carter and Benjamin but the two other murderers were still under the covers. I didn't knew who they were. Rebecca? Lisa? Morty? Sternberg? I didn't knew. There more so many suspects but no clue. Carter's system gave away no clue for the other two murderers. They must be the leaders or planners of this so hideous task, that they were still under the covers. No one talks about them. No one knows who could they be? Someone who could even rule the Carter and Benjamin.
Lucian Matthew wasn't in his house today. He was out, probably murdering someone or just torturing another soul. Once I am done with my enemies, I'll deal with him. I shook my head, going through my data. Something, something must have changed, something must be missing or something must have been added in my data. But I couldn't find a freaking single thing! My blue orbs focused on the screen of my laptop as I had removed my colored lens. My hair pulled up by the hairband and I didn't had my glasses on. I never needed them on the first place.
And just when I thought, I wouldn't be bothered by him, there was a knock on the door and I jumped in surprise. I closed my eyes with annoyance before I quickly reached for my lenses and I swear, I couldn't put it in my eyes from the panic that increased with the increased number of knocks. Geez! He was doing this intentionally. I quickly put my glasses on, once I was done with the lenses and quickly got up to open the door. I didn't knew if the person was Lucian Matthew or not. So I tried asking who was outside numerous times but no one replied, making my heart to thud.
I gripped the knife in my hand before opening the door and there stood Lucian Infuriatingly Matthew, with his face mask on as he was leaning against the doorframe and I let out a breath before glaring at him as I pushed his mask down, vehemently and he rose his brow, walking inside before he sat down on the sofa, placing his right leg over his left one's.
"Be quick next time, Green. Or I may think that you were impersonating to be someone else." He said, his face impassive and I swallowed down, my heart still beating in my chest. I wasn't impersonating to be someone else. But I was surely feigning to be a person that doesn't even exist.
"Why didn't you answer when I asked who was on the other side of the door?" I gritted out and he looked up at me before shrugging his shoulders before speaking, his ring rolling in process.
"Because it's fun to see you all riled up, sweetheart."
Have mercy Lord.
