FINALLY alone in her bedroom, Mutya leaned her back on the thin door. She started shaking as the tears fell on her face.  She slouched on the floor and embraced her knees. She pressed her face on top of her knees to muffle the sobs that exit her mouth. Five years. It has been five years since she suffered from a great heartbreak that shattered her spirit. It took her half a year before she warmed up with the two people who opened their house for her. It was more than a year before she started laughing with them. Life before the Vasquez’ was no better. She was an omega of the pack when her biological parents died when she was thirteen. Omegas in the pack are pack members who are not just common members but rather werewolves that are doing the menial jobs. Since she has no parents that would defend nor pay for her basic needs, she was sent to work in the kitchen as a dishwasher. The modest earning as a dishwasher helped her to get by and paid for the little luxuries she wants since the food was already free. When she turned sixteen, she aided the chef that cooked at the pack house. It became a full-time job for Mutya since she was no longer going to school. She stopped after the semester in the eighth grade. The alpha refused to support her education when she asked for assistance. Her worst nightmare came on her seventeenth birthday. She was very happy when she reported to work that day.  She already expected mean treatments of the pack members but she paid them no mind for she would be meeting the destined mate the goddess has made for her. Werewolves in general prayed at the moon goddess, Selene, for she was said to be the mother of all werewolves since she created the first werewolf. She loved her creation so much that she never wanted her children to wander alone in his lifetime. In turn, she bestowed each werewolf with a mate. This mate is destined only for that person. A werewolf will recognize his mate from the age of seventeen. The mate can be identified in different ways with the help of the basic senses. Through the sight, when a werewolf spotted his destined mate. At the moment, the person seems to be the only one he sees despite the number of people around him. When given a chance to hear the voice, it seems appealing and soothing to the ears. And the most accurate was through touch. When the skin touch, a glimmer of electronic spark between mates will be felt. Through all these senses, the beast inside the shifter will confirm that the person is indeed their mate. On her birthday, she found her mate. She was ecstatic that she will no longer be alone. However, when the night falls, she was running for her life. Aside from being rejected, she was banished from her pack. The mate that was destined for her denied their fate of being together. He never wanted to be associated with an omega like her. He wanted a mate who would be enough to be paraded in the pack proudly. The night that Angelina Vasquez found her in the woods, she has been running for hours. That was the same night when she was rejected. She was thankful that she did not encounter any rogues nor stepped on the territory of another pack. “Mutya, come outside. The mangoes you brought is very sweet. Your father already finished a piece.” She cleared her throat when she heard that from her mother. “I’m still full. I bought a pie in the market.” She responded. “Alright. I’ll left one for you.” “Thank you. I’ll be in my room. I felt a little light-headed. Must be the heat.” She lied. “Sleep it off. You’ll feel better later.” Mutya did not respond anymore. She went to her bed and cried some more for the pain she went through. Once again, she prayed for the moon goddess that she gives her peace. She prayed for the goddess’ guidance.   “You think, I will want someone like you to stand beside me?” She pressed herself on the wall. Fear plague her being as she held the scruffy clothes on her body. Half of her face was covered with her long, brown hair that escaped from the bun she made this morning. Mutya wiped the tears that fell like a waterfall on her face. The blood that dribbled from the side of her lips tumbled down her naked front together with her tears. The person that supposed to protect her caused her pain unimaginable. She tried hard to mute the sob from her mouth. Her throat was in pain due to the unexpressed emotions she was hiding. The screams she made from a while ago stopped when he punched her in the jaw on both sides. Her stomach received the same treatment from his knuckles. Eyes on her aggressor, she saw him buttoned his pants. The sound of the zipper sliced the silent night. “You will never be good enough for someone like me, omega. I want someone who could lift my name and bring glory to this pack.” With disdain, he glowered at the pitiful girl on the ground. “I reject you as my mate, omega.” Terrified and in pain, she stared into his eyes. Quivering in agony, she muttered the words that would seal her fate. “I accept your rejection. I reject you as my mate also.” She said firmly. Her eyes were drenched with tears. Fury marked his face. “I don’t want to see you in the morning. I will kill you if our paths ever cross again.”   Mutya woke up gasping for air. She clasped her heaving chest. It is all coming back.  It has been so long since she had that dream. She glanced at her surroundings. She sighed in relief when she saw the familiar dream catcher on the wall. It swayed in the air. She remembered her father placing it there. He disclosed that there was a shaman in the market who told him that the dream catcher will help her sleep better. It did help her sleep better. The dream catcher represents the presence of the couple in the room. That way, she did not feel alone but rather protected. Mutya sat in the middle of the bed. Despite the cool air coming from the open windows, she was drenched in sweat. She climbed out of the bed when she felt a little better. She grabbed for the towel before she left the confinement of the bedroom. She saw no one when inside the hut. Her parents must be in the garden. A smile formed on her lips when she saw the food on the table. Her mother indeed left a piece of mango. Living with the Vasquez made her life easier. She was accepted by the couple as their own child regardless of the baggage she has with her. Angelina treated her like a child. On the first year that she was with them, the old woman would comb and braid her hair. She also learned that the woman had a miscarriage in the past. The doctor advised them not to have another child or her life will be at stake.   On the other hand, Bernardo built the bed she has in her room. He even put an extra lock on her door and windows so that she will feel safer. He asked their neighbor to install the metal grills in her windows. Her adopted father promised her that no one will hurt her again while she was with them. He was true to his promise last five years. She dashed to the shower. While on it, she was thinking of preparing pasta for dinner. It was her father’s favorite. She has to be better. The couple who embraced her with their heart deserved a strong daughter just like them. With much greater resolved, she changed into a pair of shorts and vee neck shirt. She went to the kitchen and prepare pasta for dinner. Her folks would be hungry when they arrived from the garden at sundown.
