CHAPTER 8 - The Devil’s Trap

2222 Words
Rachel waited for Levi in front of the school gate as they had promised yesterday. She had waited for thirty minutes, and there’s still no sign of him. She let out a deep sigh. She should’ve known that he was just showing off in front of her yesterday. Feeling disappointed, Rachel turned around with a lowered face, she suddenly bumped into Levi’s hard chest. “Going somewhere, Rachel? I thought you said you’ll wait for me here.” He said, smirking while holding into her waist before she fell back. Rachel was stunned by the gorgeous creature in front of her. He was too handsome to be true. For a second, she even almost forgot about Adam. Why are there so many handsome boys nowadays? They were nothing like the guy she ever dated before. “Levi? I thought you’ll bail on me!” She hit his chest softly. Levi let out a soft chuckle. “I am the man of my words. I always kept my promise…” He put his hands on the side of her cheek, caressing it softly. His hands are warm and soft. “Especially… to a beautiful girl like you.” Rachel almost fainted as she gasped for air to breathe. Damn! This man is intense. She quickly pulled back from him and looked away. “Come on! The class will start in a minute…” Rachel said as she walked towards the class. Levi followed behind her with an amused look on his face. Humans are fun to play with. Adam was on his way to his seat when he saw a new suspicious student in his class. He sat beside Rachel, and he gave Adam a weird look. “Adam!” Harper called for him, distracting him from that new guy. Adam took a seat beside Harper and put a lunchbox in front of her. “I’ve brought you breakfast!” he said proudly. “Really? You don’t have to bring me food every day, Adam.” Harper said shyly. She was just being polite, while she actually likes his sweet attention. She almost ran out of money since she decided to live independently, and she hasn't eaten anything today. “Oh, come on, Harper! This is nothing. Today I’ve made some omelet on my own.” Harper quickly opened the lunchbox with anticipation. She had to restrain her laughter when she looked at the omelet. She even can see a piece of eggshell in between the tomatoes and onions. “What happened to the egg? Did a car ran through it?” she chuckled. It looked more like a messy scrambled egg than an omelet. She took a bite and spat it out immediately. It was too salty. “You don’t like it?” Adam asked with a sad face. Harper doesn’t have the heart to hurt his feeling. “No, it’s good!” Harper said as she took another spoonful and swallowed it with so much difficulty. “You give me too much credit, Harper. Yours still taste better than mine.” He replied with a happy smile. Poor Adam still thinks that Harper actually liked his food. They didn’t realize that Levi is paying attention to their affectionate behavior. He couldn’t help but feel jealous of his little brother, Adam. He also wanted to have her. She looked tempting with her big innocent eyes. Harper smiled bitterly at Adam and quickly put down her food when she saw the professor entered the classroom. Saved by the bell! Harper said to herself. She promised herself to teach him a cooking lesson the next time she went to his house. Meanwhile, Adam’s attention went back to the new student that sit beside Rachel. “Who are you?” The teacher suddenly asked him. Levi reluctantly gets up from his chair, “Sorry, sir, just visiting my brother today.” He said, smirking, and throws a glance at Adam. Only then, Adam knew that his hunch was right all along. He is Leviathan, the prince of Envy. The brother that he despises the most among all of his six brothers. The atmosphere inside the class suddenly turned cold and eerie. It was the exact same feeling when Harper met Adam’s brother the last time in his apartment. Harper looked at Adam’s stern face. She elbowed Adam to break their intense staring contest. “Adam, is that your brother?” Harper asked carefully. He didn’t reply and kept his eyes on him the entire time until Levi walked out of the classroom. “Adam?” Harper tapped his shoulder lightly. “Um…Yes, Harper…What did you just say?” He asked her back. “Is he your brother?” She repeated. “Levi…He’s the one that my older brother had warned me the last time at my apartment.” He explained. “Is he a bad guy?” Harper asked concernedly. “Yes, he is…And I want you to stay away from him.” He warned Harper with a stern voice. What is it between him and his brother? Why they never get along well with each other? They were all undeniably handsome, but each had a different persona. “Adam, are you going to watch my competition tomorrow?” Harper asked, switching the topic. Tomorrow is a big day for Harper. If she can win the competition, she could have a place to live. “Your competition is tomorrow?” He asked her back in surprise. “Yes, and I hope you can come. I even brought a ticket for you.” Harper slid the ticket on top of the table to his front. Adam felt touch by her invitation. She wanted him to come. “Don’t worry, Taylor won’t come! He also had a match tomorrow.” Harper said as if she could read his mind. Adam smiled from ear to ear. “Of course, I’ll come… I won’t miss it.” He replied. She smiled back at him. She hopes he would keep his promise this time. ******************* Adam already brought a bouquet of roses for Harper. He knew that Harper would win the competition for sure. He took a final good look at his reflection in the mirror before he stepped out of his apartment. Just when he opened the door, he suddenly saw Rachel. Feeling confused, he raised one eyebrow as he looked at her uninterestingly. “Rachel? What are you doing here?” He asked. Rachel burst out into tears and hugged him tightly. “Help me, Adam…Your brother did something terrible to me!” she cried even louder. Adam quickly pulled her inside and closed the door before the neighbor could hear. He didn’t want them to think anything weird or badmouthing him. Therefore, his heartbeat went up after hearing that she mentioned his brother, Levi. “What did he do to you?” He asked firmly while looking into her. Her eyes were red, and she had a runny nose. “He just tries to rape me!” Adam’s eyes went wide at her words. How could he do that? Not even him, the prince of lust, dared to bed humans without their consent. And to forced humans to fulfill his lust was so unlike Levi. “What did you just say?! Don’t you dare lie to me, Rachel!” He warned her. “I’m not lying to you, Adam. Do you see this?” She opened one of her shirt’s buttons and showed Adam a lovebite on her neck. “Is that even real?” Adam asked accusingly as he checked on the mark on her smooth neck. Rachel suddenly pushed him back and pressed her lips onto his. Adam’s eyes went wide after he realized what happened. They just tricked him! Levi knows that Adam cannot reject s****l temptation like this. Rachel circled her arms around his neck and deepened the kiss. She was literally on top of him now. Damn! Adam felt weak as he realized that his own sin has taken over his body at that moment. *************** The jury for tonight was a very strict one. Harper felt her heart beating rapidly as her turns grow nearer. Harper saw a girl just around her age performed beautifully before her. She had wonder can she compete with her in this? Can she be as good as her? A train of bad thought-filled Harper’s head. She then heard a loud clap from the audience after the girl finished with her performance. “What a great performance by miss Susie Garreth!” The MC said after she went back to the backstairs. The girl looked at Harper disdainfully. “The next performance is Harper Brown. She’s a college student from Cornell University, but her dream is to become a professional dancer. Give her a big applause!” The MC shouted cheerfully, followed by a loud clap from the audience. Harper took a deep breath before she stepped out onto the stage. She makes her entrance gracefully tiptoeing to the soft song. As she started to dance, her eyes instantly catch Mrs. Clara. She looked at Harper from the front row with tearful eyes. Harper tried her best to make Mrs.Clara proud. As Harper makes another turn, she tried to spot Adam from the audience seats, but he’s not there. His seat was empty. Harper kept dancing, but halfway through her performance, he still hasn’t come. She was starting to feel worried and disappointed. She looked into his seat again, but her eyes saw another man sitting there. No, she already buys the ticket for Adam! How come there’s another person who took his seat?   Harper looked in that direction one more time to get a better look at the man. She almost fell from the stage when she realized that it was no other than Adam’s brother! He looked at her straightly with his searing eyes. His stares were deep and distracting. Harper unconsciously ruined her moves since she wanted this performance to ends quickly. Adam said she needs to stay away from him! Harper was sweating in cold after she finished with the performance. She even saw Levi giving me a big round of applause from his seat. Harper quickly went backstage and joined the other girls. What is he doing here? Suddenly, she felt someone tapped her shoulder from behind. Startled, she jumped back in shock. “Oh my God, Mrs. Clara! I thought you were somebody else!” Harper sighed in relief. “What happened back there, Harper? You were good on the first half of your performance, but it went off messy at the end.” Mrs. Clara asked her softly. She knows that something must be bothering her. “I just felt nervous…that’s all,” Harper replied to her casually. Harper thinks that she just ruined her only chance to win this competition. “Hey, don’t be sad…Have you seen how impressed the judges are by your performance earlier?” Mrs. Clara said in an assuring tone. Harper looked up at her face, “They did?” she didn’t pay much attention to the judges since Levi’s presence disturbs her so much. They then waited for the final result. Tonight the judges will pick the three best performances, and the selected candidates will be automatically invited for the next round, competing against another country. It was quite impressive. ************ All of the ballerina lined up on the stage nervously, as if we were about to hear a death sentence. As expected, Susie Garreth won first place. Harper’s heart suddenly deflated. Tears almost rolled down from her cheek when the judges called her name. She unexpectedly won third place and she got 10.000USD as the second runner up. She couldn’t believe what she just heard! She now has money to rent an apartment. She couldn’t wait to tell Adam. But why didn’t he showed up today? ************ Harper went out after the competition ends. The street was quite empty tonight. She tightened her jacket as she pulled out her phone from her pocket. She had decided that she will call Adam and asked about his whereabouts. It was ringing several times, “Harper…” she heard Adam picked up her calls. She was about to scold Adam for bailing on her tonight, but she suddenly saw Levi stood in front of him. “Harper…I’m on my way there! Please wait for me…” Adam said from the other side. “Harper??” Adam asked her again because she didn’t reply. “Adam…Your brother is here,” Harper uttered slowly as her eyes fixated on the devil in front of her.
