Chapter 4

1697 Words
On the luscious green grass sits a girl, her hair, the colour resembling caramel, looking so sweet and nearly edible making people want to bury their faces in the luscious locks, blows gently in the breeze. The color is so beautiful and rich that you can nearly believe that you can smell caramel coming off the shiny tendrils. Her emerald green eyes, that are so vivid that they are able to capture anyone in their depths if they are lucky enough to be looked upon by the beauty, scan the area, a light smile on her face that doesn't really reach her eyes. A large arm is wrapped around her waist and a man sits behind her, his chest pressed to her back, his gentle breath against her neck, making her slightly cringe, his chin sitting on her shoulder as he looks at the same view as her. The seemingly perfect couple only a mere four months ago, has now become a school-wide joke. Of course, no one ever says it to Ember’s face, but she knows they're all thinking the same thing. Oh poor her. The man wrapped around her tightly but never once as tightly as it was before, is the beta of the pack. Surrounding them are Ember’s two brothers. She is one of three, a triplet lot. Alpha blooded triplets, the stunning beautiful girl and the amazingly handsome boys. They are a source of amazement for all. So how did the three-year relationship between the two people become a joke? How did the relationship that seemed so beautiful between a handsome future beta and a beautiful alpha daughter, warrant everyone to look at Ember with pity? No one ever looks at Declan with pity, after all banging the hottest girl in school for so many years is considered a massive accomplishment. They all look at Ember with pity because as soon as Declan turned eighteen and gained his wolf it became apparent that the childhood sweethearts were not fated mates, eventually confirmed when the triplets got their wolves three months later. Every single person in this school knows that Ember is going to be dumped, it is just the when that remains. Declan and Ember just keep the charade of the pointless relationship, knowing full well that it has a looming deadline. Ember has seen the pitiful looks, she has seen the predatory eyes, watching her like she is a dead carcass, once abandoned, all the vultures or, in this case, wolves will pounce. She has seen the girls gloating looks. She has no idea what they are all so smug about, they aren't his mate, they aren't her brothers' mates. What makes them any different? What makes them special, but she is somehow sad and pathetic, able to be ridiculed as if she did something wrong, as if she is not worthy of anyone just because she is not fated to Declan? Ember leans forward, trying to get more space between the two of them. She would rather just move back into the friendship stage of the relationship now. Carrying on this pointless association is just a waste of time and will get more awkward as time goes on. The longer it drags on, the more it is going to be really awkward when either of their mates joins the group of four. That is the part she is finding the hardest to deal with, not only the loss of having Declan, when she really thought that he would be her mate, it is also the feeling that she is going to get kicked out of their little group of four. While it sounds weird for her own brother to kick her out, she has seen everyone in the pack. Everyone now knows that when she finds her mate she will be leaving the pack, so technically, she is an outsider. Who cares about her Amethyst pack Alpha bloodline? Who cares about any of it, because really it is going to have nothing to do with her and that is how everyone feels about it and they have made it abundantly clear. She will just have to pack up and leave her pack, leave everything she's ever known behind. That is if she even has a fated mate, the moon goddess already had a tough enough time on the day of their birth worrying about the two future Alpha boys. Why would she worry about the alpha girl? So that is a story of how she has gone from one of the most respected she wolves in school to somehow the pitiable one, the pathetic little one waiting to be dumped. She knows that she is more than that, but that is all anyone else sees now and what everyone else sees. It is hard not to see it in herself. Declan kisses her neck, keeping his lips on her soft skin. "Don't tell me that you are being all miserable again?" Ember snorts, miserable? Declan has really been thinking too highly of himself. It is not the loss of Declan that is getting to Ember, it is the loss of her identity within the pack, it is her brothers pulling away, it is her families looks at her. While it was an initial blow, she is more than happy to go back to just being friends with Declan. It is just the waiting that is now getting on her nerves. She would rather find her mate first, so then she would feel like she has won this game. But this school is large, comprising of four packs and to top it off, after word was spread that Declan was not in fact her mate, most of the unmated males from the packs that weren't already in school may have inadvertently shown themselves in front of Ember on the off chance that they are her mate. Even with the looks and the supposed rumors and pity, Ember is the most desired she wolf in the area. The parade of id*ots showing themselves in front of her was slightly annoying. It was also disappointing as her mate was not among them, so that means one thing: her mate is not close by, so chances of winning are stacked against her, as she is playing in very unfavorable conditions. "I am not miserable, I am just watching" The longer that Ember is with Declan after finding out the truth, the more she starts to question herself. Has he changed or was he always this annoying? While he is perfect friend material, boyfriend material in the next instance, not so much. It is funny, that a little thing like a fated mate can completely change your view of someone. Maybe back then she just saw what she wanted to see instead of what was really there, felt what she wanted to feel, even though none of it was real. Was it just wanting to remain in the Amethyst pack or did she actually like Declan? She is not actually sure now. She knows it was never love beyond friendship, otherwise it would have hurt a lot more than it did. Is that lack of judgement? Or is that just blind reliance on the moon goddess to get it right? How can she possibly always be right? She has to make mistakes at some point. She must make some at least, otherwise there wouldn't be such thing as rejections in the world. Does Ember think that the moon goddess made a mistake in not pairing up her and Declan? Not really, when she stopped and had a good hard think about it. Now that she looks back and starts to realize that Declan is good but there is a lot better, right now she can only hope for more. Declan is good and is perfect for someone, just not her and she is fine with the discovery. Whatever happens from here, she is hardly going to throw herself a pity party about Declan. He is not worth it, her feelings for him were surprisingly shallow. She just never knew the fact before. She watches the people scurry around, everyone seems so busy, all with something to do, someone to see, yet she feels so stuck. Something finally draws her attention, something out of the ordinary, as a murmur seems to travel across the entire school and people start rushing towards the entrance. Ember, Declan, Xander and Maddox don't need to bother doing such useless things like running down the front, they will know about it soon enough, they don’t follow the masses, they were born to lead the masses. While Ember’s curiosity has peaked, it is still not enough for her to follow. Finally, word gets back to the group. "A new kid?" Ember relaxes back down. Here she was thinking that it was going to be something good, the way everyone was running. She thought it was going to be slightly more interesting. Xander laughs. "Is that really what this school has been reduced to? Is it really worth all that just to go look at a new kid? I didn't realize we were all so boring" Ember clicks her tongue against the cheek and smirks at her brother, even though her brothers have been pulling away, she has been trying hard to treat them the way she always has. "Well, we all know that you are that boring" Maddox and Declan laugh. Even though the three were born on the same day, obviously Ember has no rights to inherit the pack. In the competition between the two boys, Xander is the steady and sensible one, Maddox is the joker, the violent, ever fun one, a strange combination, but in Maddox it just seems to work. Declan kisses Ember on the cheek before they all start walking at a slow pace back to their respective classes. Even though Ember has no interest, she can’t help but cast a glance down toward the front gate. The mess is nearly cleared with no sign of the new kid and no sign of the people that thought it was so exciting that they had to flock like sheep.
