Jack “Elizabeth, take the children and run,” My father orders my mother. The pack alarms woke me up, and I stood in the living room watching my frantic parents argue about what to do. My little sister is beside me, crying her eyes out. “I’m not leaving you, Larry,” Mom argues. “Take the children, Liz,” Dad says in a desperate tone. He flicks his eyes to me. “Jack,” He grabs my shoulders. “I need you to be brave. I need you to protect your sister,” he says. “Daddy,” Emily cries. “Go with Jack and Mommy, Em,” Dad touches her cheek. “Know I love you both.” A pounding can be heard on the door as people cry out. I can smell smoke and get a sense of foreboding. “Be brave, Jack. Remember who you are,” Dad touches my cheek as the doors burst open and strangers flood in. “Liz!” Dad yells
