Chapter 1
I skip giggling over to the swings. It took me forever to find the park and now I'm finally here. I plop down on the swing and try moving but I can't. My feet don't touch the floor. I frown and squirm more trying to move the swing up and down but it won't go. "Why don't you move and let the big kids on the swings." A voice says behind me. I turn around in the swing and see a boy who looks like he couldn't be more than 8. "I am a big kid." I say and he laughs. Laughs. "Not you aren't, you're just a little baby." "No I'm not, I'm a big kid!" "Sure sure. What are you, ten?" He asks and I shake my head, my pigtails swaying as I do. "No I'm 18." I stick my tongue out at him. "Yeah right. What 18 year old dresses like that. Plus you're shorter than me." He snorts. I frown but don't say anything while turning around. I am 18! I try moving the swing again but I get the same result. I puff out my cheeks frustrated. Why won't this darn swing move? "Look lady why don't you move so I can go on?" "No, you wait your turn mister." I tell him sternly. Before I have time to think my face hits the ground. I sit up seeing him smirking at me. That little boy pushed me. Tears well up in my eyes and I try desperately not to show I'm upset. "That wasn't very nice." A voice says behind me. I sniffle and turn to see the two men. They both had brown brown that was slicked back and dark brown eyes. They were much taller than me and the boy that had pushed me. I wasn't very tall so they easily towered over me. "Why would you push a little girl off the swings?" One of them asks the boy. "Cause she said she was 18 when she's not and she was taking forever." He groans in irritation. "I am 18." I glare at him defensively. He sticks his tongue out at me so I do it right back. "Why would she lie about her age?" The other twin asks. The boy shrugs. "I don't know, because she's dumb." "Uh uh." I shake my head. "Yes you are, you're the most dumbest girl on earth." He says. "No I'm not." My voice cracks as I cross my arms. One of the twins kneels down and wipe my tears away. "I'm not dumb." I whisper to him shaking my head. "You know, when little kids pick on someone it usually means they like them." He informs and my nose scrunched while looking at the kid. He was at least half my age if not more. I stand up and put my hands on my hips. "You're just jealous you're not 18." I stick my tongue out at him. He opens his mouth but then looks behind me and makes what I think was supposed to be an intimidating face before leaving. "Serves him right." I say nodding to myself. I plop myself back onto the swings determined to do it. I kick my legs but once again nothing happens. I peer over my shoulder when the chains jingle. One of the men lightly push me so the swing moves up. He does this a couple more times until I'm going really high. I giggle as it comes back down. His hands catch my swing effectively stopping me from going up again. I turn around and frown. "Why'd you stop?" "It's getting late, little one, you should get home." One of them says. I look up at the sky and squint my eyes. It was getting late. If I didn't leave now I'd be in big trouble. I hop of the swing and start running out of the park. I stop in my tracks before turning back around and running back to them. I hold my hand out and they look on in question. "High five, dummies!" The twin on the right lips twitch up as he clasps hands with mine. "Thank you! Bye!" "Don't run!" I hear one of them yell. I couldn't have even been half way home yet before I felt something wet hit my nose. I look up to see rain clouds and instinctively shiver. I gaze around for a little trying to find a place to sit until it stopped. It couldn't possibly go on for too long, plus, I didn't want to get wet. I panic as I walk some more not knowing where I am. Maybe I should've gone straight home instead of looking for somewhere to sit. I see a bench and puff out my cheeks as I sit down. I put my head down trying to block out the rain but it doesn't help. "Kid?" I look up seeing a car stopped in the middle of the road. In the front seats are the two twins from the park. "Hey! I just saw you!" I attempt a wobbly smile. "What are you doing out here? You should be home." One of them says. I push my wet hair back and look around. "I don't know where I am." I admit sheepishly. "Come here then." One of them beckons. I shakily stand up shivering and walk to the car. The one in the passenger seat gets out and opens the back door. I hesitate. They looked trustworthy and have shown they're nice but what if they kidnap me? When thunder sounded loudly behind me I instantly got in the car. "You're freezing." The one in the passenger seat observed when he sees me shivering. He turns the heat on and I relish in the feel. "Where do you live, little one?" He questions starting to drive again. "I don't know the exact address but it's on Polly street." After telling me he knows where it is he introduced himself. "I'm Damien." He looked at me through the mirror for a brief moment and smiled. "I'm Dimitri." The one in the passenger seat too introduces with a welcoming look. "I'm Alice." We chat for a bit more but overall the rest of the car ride is spent in a comfortable silence. "Pull over here, this is where I live." He stopped the car before getting out along with his brother. One of them opens my door for me and I step out. "Thank you." I say as they walk me to the door. I ring the door bell and then cringe remembering its night time. Ms. Gordon opens the door and glared down on me. "Alice Reed what did I say about ringing the doorbell?! You'll wake everyone up!" She stops her scolding when catches sight of the men behind me. "Hello." She greets with a wide smile. "Was Alice bothering you? I'm so sorry." "I was not!" "Hello." They say politely. Damien clears his throat. "Little Alice here got lost and we gave her a ride home. She wasn't a bother whatsoever. She's a very sweet girl." "Well, that's a change. She loves to have an attitude with me." Ms. Gordon sighed and motioned me in. "Come in now darling." She says. I give her a weird look before stepping in. She grabs my wrist tightly causing me to wince. "Say goodbye Alice. Don't be rude" She says forcefully. I snatch my hand back from her and wave cheerfully at Damien and Dimitri. "Have a nice night." Damien bids with a small smile. Right when I close the door Ms. Gordon has my hand in a right grip. "Ow!" I whimper. I hated living in an orphanage. Tonight's going to be a long night.
