“Watch that kid,” Dirk said quietly. “The one in the black hoodie that says ‘Thanks for nothing’ on the back.” “Got it.” Maverick leaned back, one foot on the wall behind him. The kid in question strolled slowly by the patio of one of the upscale restaurants on the Mall. After glancing around, he went down on one knee to tie his shoelace. When he stood again, he dropped something into his open backpack and meandered on, closing the pack as he did, leaving it slung over one shoulder. “Not bad. But any decent sneak thief could pull that off,” Maverick commented. “Keep watching.” They eased into mid-evening pedestrian traffic on the Mall, following the kid.
