A few minutes later, as they walked away from the pawnshop, Maverick glanced at Dirk, saying, “Want to stop for a beer?” After a brief consideration, Dirk replied, “Sure, why not.” They decided on a bar Dirk had a passing acquaintance with not too far from his apartment. He liked it because it was small and quiet, a rarity in the area. They found a table and ordered a couple of draws. When the beers arrived, Dirk took a deep drink of his while he studied Maverick. “Tell me about yourself,” Dirk finally said. “All I know is the one comment you made a while ago about making bad choices.” “Yeah. Like not going to college. My old man owned a plumbing company and wanted me to come work for him. It was a dirty job but decent money so I did. Problem was, I got to see how the other half lived.
