“Where are you?” Synne asked me from the other line.
Today is the first day of school in college. We have been dreaming of this because we have always wanted to live the carefree life of college students. We hope that’s the case.
“I’m at the entrance,” I replied before stepping out of the car.
I hate that my father has not allowed me to drive a car yet. He said that I am too reckless to drive on my own no matter how hard I tell him that I will drive safely. I already even have a driver’s license but I am still stuck with the drive.
“Oh! I’m here, too! In front of the water fountain,” she beamed.
I immediately spotted the water fountain right in the front. Standing beside it with a lot of other students is Synne in her black cropped shirt and a pair of ripped jeans. Her phone is in her ear. “I see you,” I told her before running to where she is.
She looked around and brought her phone down as she saw me. She rushed towards me and smiled excitedly. We have been waiting for this to happen. “You look good!” she beamed as she stared at me from head to foot.
I am wearing a white chiffon off-shoulder top and a pair of faded jeans. My long wavy brown hair is down with a side clip. Mom told me I look like a lady and I was kind of proud. For the last seventeen years, I am always seen by Mom as a baby. It was such a compliment to be called a lady by her.
“You, too!” I told Synne. “Anyway, where do we go first?” I asked her as I faced the huge entrance in front of us.
Our previous school was also huge but this is the University of Nevada, one of the biggest universities in Vegas.
“I think we have to go and get out schedule first. I overheard people going to the registrar. We can go and check first before we go to the general assembly,” she replied as we both headed to where the registrar is.
Students are all lined up in there. I can see some cliques staying together—the jocks, the cheerleaders, the band people, and some muscular men. They are most probably seniors because they seem to have known each other for a long time already.
Synne hooked her arm around mine and led me to the shortest line she saw. We were just so busy looking around, observing all the students around us until one line made way for someone.
I narrowed my eyes at the man in a black shirt and a pair of jeans. He looked so simple but the scowl on his face makes him look so scary. He walked straight to the front while the rest made way for him.
Who is he? And why does it seem like everyone is afraid of him?
“That must be him,” Synne mumbled, making me look at her with narrowed eyes.
“Who?” I asked because I have literally no idea of who that person is. Is he a thug or something?
Synne looked around to see if someone might hear us from earshot before leaning closer. “He’s Xavion York Zachory, allegedly one of the leaders of Upsilon Pi, one of the most dangerous fraternities not just in UNLV but in the whole of Nevada!”
My eyes widened as I stared at him again. Xavion is at the registrar and the people around him look so alarmed and calculating. After a few moments, he was given a piece of paper—probably his schedule—and he left without throwing a glance at anyone.
It is rather amazing to know that someone is capable of acting that way. I am more amazed than disgusted and disappointed. He’s like a king and it was obvious that no one wants to get on his bad side.
He left the area without talking to anyone and right when he was gone, everyone started to murmur and whisper to each other. Gone is the silence brought by his presence in an instant.
I looked at Synne who is shaking her head. “He’s handsome but he is too dangerous,” she commented.
I rolled my eyes. “He looks scary.”
He is. And with the way everyone is treating him, he is even scarier.
“Well, he is powerful,” she replied. “Having a fraternity as dangerous as Upsilon Pi back you up makes you a hundred times powerful. Did you know that their fraternity donates hundreds of thousands of dollars to the school every year? Some said that the school owner is one of the members of the said frat, too.”
I haven’t heard about fraternities. I am not the type to concern myself with issues that do not involve me. I have a lot of things to think about and I can’t be stressed over something that is clearly out of my scope.
I pursed my lips and shook my head. There’s nothing I can do with that. More importantly, I have learned from my mother to not overstress myself.
Synne and I finally got our schedules and walked over to the general assembly in the auditorium. She said that this is not only for the freshmen but also for sophomores, too. We decided to sit on the benches near the exit so we can leave faster later on.
Everything is so new to me and I can’t help but feel excited about my college life. Dad told me a lot of stories about his college life and said that it was one of the best moments of his life. Mom was different though because she didn’t take up the course that she wanted but nonetheless, she was excited for me.
“Do you think we can impress senior boys here?” Synne asked after pointing at some hot sophomore men from the crowd. She has been looking forward to seeing handsome boys. Her parents said that she can have a boyfriend in college and that is the reason why she’s so excited about this.
I rolled my eyes and shook my head before laughing lightly. “You need to study first,” I said but I don’t really need to remind her because she’s more intelligent than I am. That is the reason why she’s on her way to get her pre-law while I went for business administration.
We were surveying the whole scene before I felt someone stand beside me. I slowly looked up and was stoned on my spot when I saw Xavion towering over me. His brows are furrowed at me before pursing his lips.
“Can you move a bit?” he asked me in a small voice and I had no questions asked. I pushed Synne who seemed to not have been aware of the situation yet. “Thank you,” he uttered as he sat beside me without further ado.
I pinched Synne, making me glare at her but stopped immediately when she saw Xavion sitting beside me.
“What the hell?” she hissed.
I pursed my lips and shook my head. “Stop being so annoying!” I hissed back.
She squealed silently before leaning closer. “f**k! He’s so handsome!”
I swallowed hard and did everything I can to fight the urge to turn to him. I know he’s handsome—dangerously handsome—but I have that certain urge to check him out again.
“How long will this be?”
Synne was shocked to hear Xavion speak suddenly. “He’s asking you something…” she hissed.
I bit my lip and slowly turned to him in a shy manner. “An hour, I guess,” I replied and prayed that he would not sense the fear in my voice.
He nodded and looked at the stage. “Thanks,” he whispered in a low baritone and that was the time for me to stare at his face.
