Chapter 3
April Telford POV
(ONE WEEK LATER)
■■■■
I tried to focus on the class.
But my mind was blank.
“Are you okay?”
I heard Sierra ask me
And I nodded as a reply.
The class went like a blur.
This was my first day at college after Abel's accident.
I was spending all my days in the hospital, staring at him.
Walking along with the nurses when they checked his pulse, his breathing.
I hoped that somehow magically he would turn to me and smile.
Saying he is awake.
He is fine.
But so far, the magic hasn't come true.
But I kept on thinking.
Thinking that he would smile at me soon.
His best friend, Theodore.
I don't say he was the Knight in my story.
And yeah, I had hugged him tight.
Probably ruined his perfect shirt with my tears, but he wasn't my hero.
I had hated him my whole life.
No one knew this about him.
But Theodore Brown was the biggest bully of my life.
Always found chances to have me grounded.
Making me cry at everything.
Made fun of me in front of his girlfriends who were older.
Like he was.
He was Abel's age.
They were both classmates.
Theo came from a poor family.
When we first met him, his father was arrested on drug charges.
And his mother was living with her then second husband.
My mother had welcomed Theo to our family.
He was always welcome, happily.
I considered him a family. Even though we tried our best to kill each other.
But I had never spoken to him ,after our parents' death.
He never came home after that either.
But I knew Abel and he were still friends.
I would see Theo at the parties. When Abel used to take me along with him, which never happened often.
When I met Theo, I was fifteen.
And he was the person I wanted to kill.
Had even planned to buy books, to learn how to get away with a murder.
But it hadn't happened.
Even now, I haven't spoken to him.
He made sure he spoke to Morgan but not me.
I hated him already, nothing of this mattered.
But I couldn't ignore the fact that there was no one but him, out there for me or for my family.
He was the only one, somehow.
Sierra nudged my shoulders and when I looked around, everybody was leaving.
The professor was already gone.
The class was over, and I was here thinking about everything from the past.
Present
“Are you sure, you are okay?
You don't seem fine”
Sierra asks, as we walk out
And I nod.
She's stayed with me for two nights.
But she had her professional course exams, so eventually she went back home to prepare for that.
I should have prepared for mine too, but my mind wasn't doing alright.
“How's your brother?”
She asked, after a minute of silence.
“He is just like that.
Sleeping”
I answered, licking my dry lips.
“I'm sure he will be fine.
Soon”
She squeezed my hand as we headed to the parking lot.
“Did you speak to Ian?
He had texted me saying you weren't picking his calls.
I mentioned that your brother was at the hospital that you are busy”
Sierra asked. And I sighed
Ian
My half boyfriend
Well, it was complicated
I guess the whole of my dating history is complicated, that's why I was still a half virgin…
“No.
I'll text him later.
I just need some time to process everything”
I sighed.
And she nodded, agreeing.
“Is that Morgan?
Your brother's secretary?”
Sierra asked
And when I looked up
It was indeed Morgan.
But she wasn't alone.
“f**k.
Who's that guy, April?
He looks young.
Maybe a couple years older than us.
But look at his tattoos, all over his left hand.
His t-shirt looks so skin fit.
No way nerdy Morgan could hit that high score.
Right?”
Sierra asked.
Her jaw dropped and I rolled my eyes.
“He is Theo”
I murmured, as I stared at them.
What are they doing here?
“My brother's friend”
I added
“Is he single?”
Sierra gushed, not taking her eyes off.
“He is off limits, Sierra.
Now I should go check on them.
To know why, they are here.
Because no way Mr. Brown and Ms. Webb will be here with us on a Monday morning”
I shrugged as I headed towards where they were.
There was only one car.
Theo's black BMW.
Did Morgan ride with him?
If yes, but why?
We're they dating ?
Isn't this against the company policy to date inside the office.
Like no dating policy kind?
Oh, yeah.
Theo didn't work there.
And they were two individuals who could do what they wanted as adults.
“Ms.Telford.
We have to talk to you”
Morgan smiled as she looked at me.
“Catch an Uber Morgan.
I'll talk to her”
Theo put his sunglasses back, as he opened the passenger seat for me.
Morgan looked at me and back at him.
Stunned to speak
“But…”
She tried
But Theo didn't pay any attention.
He left the door hanging as I didn't move, and he got on the driver's seat.
“After Mr. Brown is done speaking.
Please call me.
I'm certain, you would need a better explanation from me”
Morgan stated, her voice nervous as she stepped back.
I felt bad for leaving her behind, so I grabbed my car keys
“Take my car, Morgan.”
I offered
She nodded, relieved.
I took the passenger seat
And he didn't give me a second to shut the door or even put on the seat belt, as he started the car…
Racing the speed
“Apple.
I know things have been hard.”
He started.
His eyes focused on the road
Last time I had seen his arms, was three years ago.
Usually, he always wore a tuxedo, full shirts, and suits to the party ,or any events.
Looked like a rich businessman, which he was.
He had done big for himself.
Just like my brother.
But now he was here with a white t-shirt and jeans.
Showing off his biceps,
Maybe he wanted all the girls in my college to stare at him.
He was a man w***e. And still his.
Probably f****d everyone…
He is lucky, he is good-looking.
With those grey eyes and black hair of his.
Perfect body,
Tall figure.
And apple?
He can't call me that anymore.
I hated it,
The nickname.
But I remained quiet.
I almost forgot what his voice sounded like.
“Your stepbrother Finneas?
He is a pain in the ass”
His jaw clenched, as he pulled over.
And I licked my lips as he turned towards me.
Theo…
“You cannot take over your brother's position until you are twenty-one.
And technically, the only legal guardian or legal person who can help you is your step-brother.
Who is trying his best to get Abel's company.
We don't have time.
We can't leave the company with Abel's absence for too long.”
I noticed the way his eyebrows moved with every word of his.
“Are you listening?”
He asked
And I nodded.
“Abel will be fine”
I whispered.
And he nodded.
“But until then, we need to have someone to run the business in his absence.”
He continued
And I nodded, understanding.
“Do you trust me enough to take over Abel's company?
I mean, it will be f*****g hard, but I don't want anything to go wrong during Abel's absence.
I know the struggle that he has put into that company.
It's his dream.”
He sighed.
He was right.
If there was one person, Abel would trust.
It was Theo.
“Okay.
You can take over the company.
I mean, you are the only one Abel would trust”
I murmured, as my voice low as I stared at his eyes, as he looked back at the road.
“I asked, do you trust me, Apple?”
He repeated his words. As he turned towards me!
Again
And I swallowed hard
I would have said no
Because he was like a known stranger to me
All my hatred was sealed for him.
But I nodded
Wanting to know where he was going with this.
But out of everything I had expected
His words, crashed my life
In matter of seconds
Again
“Good.
Because I want you to marry me”
