Chapter 3 – Things to Do

2067 Words
If these are Nathalie's unfinished business, then I have a peculiar mission. I go through her things to do again. She scribbled the words in an English calligraphy font that I had to trace to check whether it was handwritten or not, but it was. 1. Take a bath 2. Burn the dress 3. Go to the laundry shop 4. See Dr. Amanda Lee 5. Take the ticket 6. Submit a resignation letter I never thought taking a bath would be a challenge. It took me more than an hour to finish taking a bath because I had to scrub her skin in a careful and thorough manner to get rid of the dried blood from the stabs and bruises she got. After I get dressed, I crossed out number one on the list. Then do the next task. I breathed on it, and the black evening dress was in flames and gone in an instant. Two tasks were done. I raised my brows on her third task.  2. Go to the laundry shop  Which laundry shop? This will be a bit hard because there are many laundry shops in this city. "Nathalie, don't make me guess," I said, tapping my forehead. "Why can't you remember anything?" I pace around the room and force my brain to think. If I could travel inside her brain, I would say it's a ghost town, it's really quiet. I sighed, taking her purse, but checking on myself in the mirror making sure I put on clothes. "Oh my!" My lips parted in surprise when I saw my reflection. What happened to Nathalie? I remember her having waist-long, curly hair as black as midnight. Her eyes should be green. She has really beautiful alabaster skin. My possession of her changed her looks somehow. I still have long, but now wavy hair and the color was now honey blonde, and my eye color changed from green to hazel shade. As for my skin, maybe, it wasn't noticeable but I can say that my complexion is more of peaches-and-cream now. Nina made me jump when she opened the door. She should really know how to knock.  "I'm back, and oh..." she went inside, and stared at me as my face was so close to the mirror. "Wait," Poof! She was gone again. I mean, she just ran away like that and went back again with eyeglasses in her hand. "Sorry, it took me so long to realize you can't see without your eyeglasses," She hands it to me. “You left it in the living room,” I took it from her and put on the eyeglasses. I wish I could tell Nina these were just regular eyeglasses, and I wonder why Nathalie's wearing non-graded eyeglasses if she can't see clearly without them, and why would she lie? I still wore the eyeglasses anyways, because I noticed Nina loves to blabber a lot. "Nina, I forgot where to pick up my laundry, do you know where it is?" I was hoping she knew, but she shook her head. "You didn’t tell me, but you said just in case you forgot, I should just tell you 'look at the flower', which kinda vague," she explained, "what flower?" "Look at the flower," I repeated, looking around, then nodded. "Are you busy today?" She raised her brows, then shook her head again. "Would you like to come with me?" "Are you asking me to hang out with you?" she sounded elated but suspicious at the same time. She narrowed her eyes as she stared at me. "We never do that?" I tried to confirm.   "Nope, the only time you talked to me was before you went to that party," she said, "You really don't like making a chat with me or with anyone else, Nathalie," "I see, but would you like to hang out with me today? I really wanted to finish this," I told her, showing the planner to her.  Her eyes and smile widen. "Let me just get my bag," She was about to get out of my room, when she stopped and turned to me, "Are you really going out wearing that, Wednesday? I mean... Nathalie, you looked like you're going to a funeral, let me lend you something," I really don't care about colors, but this was the only dress I had in the closet, a black dress. I waited for her to come back, and when she did, she hands me a floral dress, then left, saying she'll wait in the living room. I changed from my plain black to a peach-colored and pink floral print dress. It perfectly fits Nathalie's body. I did not take much time in the mirror this time, I grabbed her purse and planner as I get out of the room. "That's better," she exclaimed, then she asked, "where to?" I shrug, "Let's look at the flower?"   The laundry shop I was looking for was not hard to find. As soon as we got out of the building, the Moon Flower Laundry Shop sign came into view. "Ah, that flower," We both exclaimed, and then she giggled. We entered the shop, where the smell of the detergent and fabric conditioner welcomed us as we walk to the counter. "Good morning, Nathalie," The old woman greeted, 'Good lord, what happened to her?' she thought as she eyed me from head to foot. "Why? What happened to me?" I said audibly, not realizing right away that she said it in her thoughts, not out loud. She raised her brows as she looked at me and Nina. I almost chuckled.  "Good morning, Olivia," I greeted, thanks to her name tag, I could know her name. "I placed your clothes in the box as you instructed," she pointed at the two boxes of Nathalie's belongings. "All you need to do is sign this form, then we can send these boxes to the charity," Olivia continued. Since there were no exact instructions on what to do with her clothes, I signed the form. I was still trying to open up her memories, but I could not get in. A shield or a lock was blocking me to read her memories. "You donated all your clothes?" Nina reacted as she watches me sign the form. "Relax, Nina," I said, accidentally touching her, making her feel calm and relaxed. "Let's just shop later," "That's weird," she beamed, smiling to herself. "Huh?" Confused, I turned to her as soon as I gave the form to Olivia. "What's weird? Donating all my clothes, or buying new ones?" "Me? Feeling calm and relaxed," she mumbled, placing her hand in her chest, and still smiling.  "I'm glad," I said, then to Olivia, "Thank you for your help," I saw Olivia's lips twitched a little. She also found me weird. Nina, still smiling, opened the door, while I read my next things to do. I tried to understand it because at first, Nathalie wrote: See Dr. Amanda Lee; Take the ticket; Submit a resignation letter but she erased the whole thing and then re-arranged the order. She had to submit the resignation letter first, then see Dr. Amanda Lee. Finally, take the ticket. Should it be in order? I looked up in the bright sky. "Who is Dr. Amanda Lee?" I was trying to ask Haamiah for a message. "Dr. Amanda Lee, the pediatrician?" blurted Nina, also looking up in the sky, trying to know what I was looking at. "You know her?" I turned to her and confirmed to know if we were talking the same Amanda Lee because I have met a lot of Lee, and there are hundreds of millions of Lee in the world and don't even start in China or Korea. "Yeah, she's my niece's doctor. I sometimes accompany my sister there whenever Jaimee has a check-up," she pointed at the hospital building, and it was beside the company where Nathalie works. My forehead furrowed because I knew that hospital. I have been there days ago when I went for Corynne's soul. It's becoming a mystery to me that I have to keep on coming back to that hospital. "Let's go," I closed my eyes, then I remember I can't just disappear before Nina, so I started to walk into the pavement. "Oh, don't we need an appointment?" she asked, following me. I showed her the planner, "I think she... I mean, I think I made an appointment with her," Maybe... It took us fifteen minutes to reach the entrance of the big hospital, and with Nina chatting animatedly, that made our walk really interesting. We went to the front desk and asked where to find Dr. Amanda Lee. "She's not here yet," The head nurse answered while looking at the monitor. "But she'll come today because Mr. Johnson has an appointment with her," she assured us. "Thank you," I said, then walked alone to the waiting area alone as Nina busied herself in getting drinks in the vendo machine. I shook my head, even from here, I could hear her thoughts. I glanced at her and when our eyes meet, I said 'just water' to help her get what I wanted from the machine. As I sat on the colorful chair, I noticed two women in nanny scrub uniforms and three nurses hovering over the stroller because the baby kept on crying as if he was in pain. I tried to listen to their thoughts but they were talking at the same, making it difficult for me to understand the problem. I tilted my head to have at least a glimpse of the baby, but with the women standing around the baby, I could not see him as well. "What's happening?" asked the man who just came in. He put down the little girl he was carrying, and let her wander on her own in the lobby. I squinted my eyes, recognizing the girl. Maya! "Oh!" I exclaimed. Maya sat quietly on the next chair, and as she played with her barbie doll, she was thinking of many things. Her thoughts kept on changing from unicorns to fairies.     He was the man who was supposed to go to Corynne's room, but he left because of a call.  My heart, Nathalie's heart, was pounding hard it hurts. I stand up and walk towards him as he was like a magnet to me that I cannot stop myself from going in his direction. "What's happening with Zion? Why is he crying?" he asked, and the ladies parted like the red sea. The nannies were in a panic as they don't know the reason either.   He scooped the baby carefully and cradled him closer to his chest, but the baby won't stop crying. Even from afar, I could feel the distress in both the father and the son. And yet, I couldn't help admiring him as he carried his baby beautifully in his arms. I shook my head and blinked. What's wrong with me? I am getting distracted again. "Why are you crying, Zion? Tell daddy," he said as if the baby could speak, Whatever discomforts him, I had to know, so I step forward, with Nina trailing behind me, her thoughts were telling me to stop, but I just can't ignore them. I tapped him, as he tried to talk to the baby as if he was an associate, on his shoulder. He turned to me with his eyes fusing with a questioning look. It took me a while to speak because once again I was mesmerized by his dazzling eyes. "Your baby is crying," I paused because it was obvious. I struggle for the next words to say because his honey-colored eyes are drowning me.  "Don't I know it?" He stated the obvious, raising his brows, and meeting my eyes. I squinted my eyes as I try to read his thoughts, but like Nathalie's it was quiet. I wanted to hush the people around me, but I don't want them to think I was insane. I don't want to scare him either, so I met his eyes. "Can I hold your baby?" I asked him, not leaving our eye contact. "Err...What?" he blinked, looking confused about what I was asking for. "Zion, can I hold him?" I breathed, with my eyes still smoldering him. He nodded, then gave Zion to me.
