"Zanda!" My father called out to me from the hotel lounge room.
I rolled my eyes in frustration. "What now!" I’d only just lay down after my workout and shower.
I was currently lying on one of the plush beds in my beige room, reading pack reports to pass the time until the ceremony.
We were staying in the penthouse suite at the Decan Hotel. It was hosting tonight’s mating ceremony.
I wasn’t looking forward to this stupid ceremony, I’d been coming since I turned 18, and I never found my mate, I was about to turn 92 in a few weeks, though thanks to my Lycan genes, I only looked around 22, people always thought my half-brother Sebastian and I were twins, but in reality, we were years apart.
I still remember the day my father showed up with him and his mother, Rebecca. Apparently, my father and Rebecca had been having an affair for several years. She was the only woman he’d loved since my mother passed away.
I remember meeting Rebecca during the war when she was the Luna of Oberon Pack. I’d noticed my father’s reaction to her, she was his second chance mate. Normally, when a Lycan finds their mate, they claim them instantly. We tend to be overly possessive and protective of our mates, especially alphas, but both my father and Rebecca were reluctant to claim one another.
My father because he was afraid of losing another Luna and wife like he’d lost my mother. She was pregnant when my uncle attacked, trying to take claim over our pack, the largest and most ruthless Lycan pack in the country.
My mother was attacked, causing her to go into early labor. She didn’t make it, and my father blamed himself, so he was in no hurry to put Rebecca in that kind of danger. My uncle was still out there, and he’d vowed revenge when my father defeated him.
And Rebecca was conflicted, she loved her mate, Alpha Nicoli and her son, she didn’t want to leave them, but she couldn’t deny that her love for my father was stronger than what she felt for Nicoli, and so they began their affair.
Once my half-brother Sebastian turned 8 and shifted for the first time, Rebecca’s secret was revealed. My brother was a Lycan, and the wolves didn’t shift until they were 10.
Alpha Nicoli rejected Rebecca and Sebastian. My father was overjoyed when she called him and told him the news. He’d suspected Sebastian or Bas, as I called him, was his son and was happy to welcome them both.
My father Toben and Rebecca married not long after she arrived, and she’s been a wonderful Luna to my people ever since.
"Zan, move your ass!" My father yelled out when I didn’t get off the bed.
I sighed and got up, pulling back on my black T-shirt before leaving the room. "What?" I asked again, running my fingers through my messed hair.
My father was sitting at the dining table with Rebecca, Sebastian, and my future Beta Alexia, although she preferred to go by Max, short for Maxine, her middle name, and my father’s Beta Alvin.
They were looking at reports, and they didn’t look happy.
"Logan has surfaced again." My father’s eyes tightened with anger and fear as he mentioned his brother. I noticed him look at Rebecca, who reached out and took his hand in comfort.
"What’s he done now?" I asked and wandered over to the table, the usual anger I felt whenever Logan was mentioned, rose up, my chest tightening.
I picked up the nearest paper and scanned it. It was a report of an attack on the werewolf pack Stella, which was close to ours. They managed to push my uncle back but at the cost of half their pack's warriors and one of the Alpha’s daughters.
"He’s going from pack to pack." Alvin answered, leaning back lazily as if it didn’t bother him. "I think he’s looking for something."
"Yeah, but what?" Sebastian asked, not taking his eyes off the photos of the dead children in front of him. My brother needed to toughen up if he was going to be my third in command, usually a gamma would be my third, but I’d chosen Sebastian, I trusted him more than any other pack member, other than Max.
"I don’t know." Alvin answer, yawning deeply, what was his problem. "But he keeps doing this, he attacks, then whilst his warriors are fighting, he searches the pack lands, then he recalls his troops and leaves."
"Do you think it’s something that will help him defeat you?" I asked my father, who was still looking at his wife with concern, "Maybe something powerful can get through our boundary spell."
After Rebecca moved to our pack, my father got her to put up a barrier spell around our territory along with a powerful coven aligned with our pack to keep her safe. My uncle had tried several times to get past it but with no luck, although it didn’t stop him from sending rogues to attack.
"Possibly." My father nodded. Somehow, he looked old. I mean technically, he was 254, but like me, he still looked very young thanks to the Lycan genes. "But it’ll be your problem soon."
"What is that meant to mean?"
"When you find your mate," He answered, "You’ll become the alpha, and I’ll step down."
"I have to find her first."
‘We will!’ My Lycan Malik said excitedly inside of me. It was rare for him to be so optimistic. He was usually very reserved and temperamental.
"You will." Rebecca smiled up at me. "I have a feeling that something is going to happen tonight."
"Really?" Max smiled excitedly. She was eager for me to find my mate, mostly so I would be happy but also so she could take over as head Beta and second in command. She hated having to yield to Alvin.
They hated each other, Alvin had a very old school idea that women should stay in the house and not on the battlefield. He and I had gotten into a very heated argument when I announced Max as my Beta.
I rolled my eyes. "You said that last year too." I reminded her.
"Something did happen last year." Rebecca reminded me, "Alvin found his mate."
"Yeah, lucky lady." Max mumbled.
I suppressed a smile as Alvin growled at her, but Max simply smirked at him before returning to the report in her hand. She was frowning as she read it.
"Anyway," Rebecca said, trying to defuse the tension, "This is the year, it’s yours for sure."
"Right." I nodded, not really believing my stepmother.
"We should all be getting ready for tonight." My father stated, standing up and rubbing his face. "We’ll set up a proper meeting about your uncle and how we can assist Stella when we get home."
"Hopefully, with our future Luna." Max clapped her hands together, jumped up, kissed my cheek, and rushed out to get ready.
I rolled my eyes again and walked back to my room to change.
‘Let's get this horror show over with.’ I mumbled to Malik.
