Party Preparations

Bella closed her bedroom door softly, the weight of the conversation with her parents still heavy on her heart. She sat down on her bed and a shiver ran down her spine as she tried to process it all. It felt surreal, but this was her reality now, and it terrified her. She wrapped her arms around herself, as if trying to ward off the cold that came from within. Why now? she thought. Why is this happening just when things were starting to make sense? Her fingers lightly touched her lips, remembering the electricity she had felt when Asher kissed her. It was still fresh in her memory, as if it had just happened moments ago. And now, with the uncertainty of their future as mates hanging over her, everything felt even more intense. A soft ping broke through her thoughts. Bella blinked, glancing down at her phone, which was resting on her bedside table. Her heart leaped when she saw the notification light up with Asher’s name. A smile tugged at the corner of her lips as she picked up the phone, her pulse quickening in anticipation. Without hesitation, she swiped the screen and answered the call. "Hey," she said softly, her voice warmer than it had been all day. "Hey, Bells," came Asher’s voice, smooth and rich, like a balm to her troubled soul. "I just wanted to hear your voice." His words sent a shiver through her, but this time it wasn’t from fear. It was from the overwhelming emotions she felt whenever they talked, whenever he was near. There was an unspoken tension between them now, thick with anticipation and hope, tangled with the uncertainty of their future. "I’m glad you called," Bella replied, her fingers twirling a loose strand of hair as she settled deeper into her bed. "I … missed you. Is not the same without you. The space feels … empty." "I miss you too," Asher confessed, his voice a little husky. "I’ve been thinking about you non-stop since yesterday." Bella blushed, her heart skipping a beat. "Really?" "Yeah," Asher said, letting out a soft chuckle. "I mean, I can’t get you out of my head, Bells. Every time I close my eyes, I see you... I feel you." His voice dropped to a whisper, full of longing and emotion. "Do you think about me too?" Bella swallowed hard, her chest tightening. The intensity of his words, his feelings, it was overwhelming. "I do," she admitted softly. "I think about you all the time, Ash. I can’t help it." There was a pause on the line, and Bella could feel the electricity between them even through the phone. The connection they shared, the unspoken bond that had been growing for years, seemed to crackle with energy, as if the distance between them meant nothing. It was as if they were in the same room, breathing the same air, their hearts beating in sync. "I don’t know how I’m supposed to wait two more days to find out," Asher said, his voice raw with emotion. "I keep telling myself to be patient, to trust that everything will work out, but..." He trailed off, and Bella could hear the frustration in his voice. "What if we’re not fated mates, Bella?" His vulnerability tugged at her heart, and she felt her own doubts rise to the surface. But she couldn’t let herself fall into that spiral of fear. Not now. She took a deep breath, steadying her voice. "Asher," she said softly, "we have to believe that the Moon Goddess has a plan for us. I know it’s hard, but we’ve come this far. We have to trust her, and trust ourselves." "I want to believe that," Asher said, his voice filled with yearning. "I really do. But it’s hard when all I want is to hold you, to know that you’re mine. That we’re meant to be." Bella’s heart clenched at his words. She knew exactly how he felt. The uncertainty, the longing, it was a weight they both carried. "You’re not alone in this, Ash. I feel the same way. Every time I think about what might happen... it scares me. But then I remember how I feel when I’m with you, and that fear fades away." There was a pause on the other end, and Bella could almost hear Asher’s breath hitch. "You mean that?" he asked, his voice quieter now, more vulnerable. "Of course I do," Bella replied, her voice steady despite the racing of her heart. "Being with you feels... right. Like it’s always been meant to be. I don’t know what the future holds, but I know how I feel right now. And I’m not going to let fear take that away from us." Asher sighed, and she could almost picture him running his hand through his dark hair, the way he always did when he was trying to sort through his emotions. "You’re stronger than I am, Bells," he said, a hint of admiration in his voice. "I don’t know what I’d do without you keeping me grounded." Bella smiled, feeling warmth spread through her chest. "We balance each other out," she teased lightly. "You keep me from overthinking everything, and I keep you from losing your mind." Asher laughed softly, the sound sending a wave of warmth through Bella. "You’re right about that." He paused again, and when he spoke next, his voice was softer, more intimate. "I wish I could be there with you right now. Hold you in my arms, just... be close to you." Bella closed her eyes, her heart aching with how much she wanted that too. "I wish that too," she whispered. "But you’ll be back soon, and then... we’ll know for sure." "Yeah," Asher murmured. They both fell silent for a moment, the weight of everything hanging between them. Bella could feel the anticipation building, the tension of the unknown mingling with the deep affection they shared. But beneath it all, there was hope, a hope that, no matter what, they would find their way through this. Together. "Bella," Asher’s voice broke the silence, his tone serious but tender. "No matter what happens, no matter what we find out... I need you to know something." Her heart skipped a beat. "What?" "I’m not going anywhere," he said firmly. "Fated or not, I’m not walking away from you. You’re... everything to me. And I’ll fight for us, no matter what." Bella’s breath caught in her throat, her chest tightening with emotion. "Ash..." she whispered, her voice thick with unshed tears. "I feel the same way. No matter what, I won’t give up on us either." The line went quiet again, but this time it was a comfortable silence, filled with the unspoken promise between them. They didn’t need to say anything more, their hearts had already said everything. As they finally said their goodnights, Bella lay back on her bed, her heart still racing, but this time it was filled with hope. Despite the storm of uncertainty, despite the fear that lingered at the edges of her mind, she knew one thing for certain: Asher was her anchor, her other half. And whether the Moon Goddess had destined them to be together or not, they would face whatever came their way. Together. -- The next day, Bella found herself at the pack house, joining the other teenagers who had been roped into helping with the party preparations for Asher's upcoming birthday. Streamers, balloons, and tables were being set up around the large hall. The atmosphere was light and bustling, full of chatter and excitement, but Bella’s mood was anything but cheerful. As she tied a string of banners along one of the walls, she couldn’t help but overhear the chatter nearby, particularly from Diana and her clique of girls, who were positioned too close for Bella’s comfort. The high-pitched giggles and exaggerated gossip were grating on her nerves. It wasn’t like she could just walk away either; she had been assigned to decorate the same section as them, much to her exasperation. "I still can’t believe it," Diana was saying, her voice dripping with satisfaction. "I mean, he had to have sensed it. Why else would he kiss me like that?" The girls around her nodded enthusiastically, hanging onto every word like it was some divine truth. Bella clenched her jaw as she adjusted the banner a little more aggressively than necessary. "I heard even a few of the adults are talking about it," one of the other girls chimed in. "They think Asher’s finally found his future Luna." Bella's stomach twisted at the mention. She rolled her eyes, trying to focus on the task at hand, but it was impossible to block out their voices. "It just makes sense," Diana continued, her voice laced with arrogance. "I mean, we’ve always had a connection. He’s probably just waiting for his birthday to make it official. I can't imagine anyone else by his side as the Luna." The smugness in Diana’s voice made Bella’s blood boil. What a load of bullshit, she thought. The kiss was clearly nothing more than a misunderstanding on Diana’s part, but the way she was flaunting it, spinning the narrative to suit her delusions, made Bella want to snap. It took every ounce of Bella’s willpower not to storm over and set the record straight, to remind Diana and everyone else that Asher was far from choosing a Luna, especially not one as entitled and insufferable as her. But she knew better than to create a scene, especially now when so much was at stake. Still, it didn’t make it any easier to hear the gossip. The whispers of Asher and Diana being "fated" mates were spreading beyond just the teenage girls. Bella had overheard a few adults talking in passing, speculating that Diana’s family had been boasting about her future role as Luna. She swallowed hard, feeling her wolf, Banja, stir with frustration. What a joke, Banja growled in Bella's mind. Tell me about it, Bella replied internally, biting her lip to keep from snapping at someone. She could feel her fingers trembling slightly as she tied another knot, her frustration bubbling beneath the surface. It was infuriating that the entire pack was being swept up by Diana’s delusions. “Bella,” a voice called out, pulling her from her thoughts. She turned to see one of the older pack members motioning for her to help with another part of the hall. “Can you come help us set up the main table?” Grateful for the distraction, Bella nodded and quickly moved away from Diana and her entourage, but not before catching another snippet of their conversation. "I bet he's planning something special for me during the party," Diana was saying, her eyes gleaming with self-importance. "After all, I’m going to be his Luna. Everyone will know by then." Bella rolled her eyes so hard it hurt. As she made her way toward the main table, Bella took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart. Her fingers still tingled from the tension, but she knew she couldn’t let Diana get to her. It wasn’t worth it. She grabbed a large floral arrangement from the nearby table and began positioning it at the center of the main display, her mind wandering back to her phone call with Asher the night before. His words had been full of hope and emotion, grounding her in the whirlwind of uncertainty they were both feeling. Bella closed her eyes for a brief moment, letting the memory of his voice soothe her frayed nerves. Soon, she thought to herself, gripping the edges of the table as if that could anchor her at that moment. Soon, we’ll know the truth. And no matter what happens, I’m not letting go.
