Chapter 6

1402 Words
~Xander POV~ I was just pulling into the office’s garage when my phone rang again. Without looking at the caller ID on my phone, I answered it through the car’s bluetooth, “hello, Xander here.” waiting for a reply. “Hello, Mr. Mathers?” the sweet, yet delicate voice said on the other end. “Yes. This is he. What can I do for you?” I asked, now looking at the phone for the caller’s identity. “Yes. This is nurse Tanya from Mercy Hope Hospital” she said in an ever so sweet yet unsure voice. “How can I help you?” was my response. “Doctor Townsend asked me to call you and inform you that Jane Doe was being moved from her current room to room 3114 due to it being closer to the nurses station.” she said, more assured of her statement. “Thank you for the information. However, could you please tell me why he needed to move her? I thought she was stable… did something happen?” starting to feel his heart beat jump at the thought that something bad had happened while in her coma. Why would that bother me? It’s not like she’s my girl, or anything else. I do not even know her. These thoughts kept running through my mind. Lord have mercy, what have I gotten myself into with this one? “No sir, she is fine. No changes as of yet. He just wanted to make sure a close eye was kept on her since her state is unknown still. He believes once she continues to heal she will wake up from the coma and wants someone to be on top of it when she does, just in case she starts to panic.” sounding confident in her comments and full of concern and compassion for Jane Doe. “Thank you nurse Tanya for the update.” was all I said before disconnecting the call. Concern rushed through my veins as my blood started to move faster. I had walked into the front lobby of my office building and nodded at the guards sitting at the security station as I entered. “Good morning Mr. Mathers.” they said as I walked by, nodding as my greeting. I waited patiently for the elevator before it opened to take me up to the sixth floor of my building; which was the top floor of all things. This building was constructed by my father and grandfather before I was born. The architecture on it was in old stucco that made it look immaculate and masculine at the same time. The first floor was primarily set up for security, although it did have four sets of restrooms on it, two down the hall on each side of the security reception area. Each floor was set up this way to ensure availability. There was also a small cafe on that floor and every floor above it, so no one had to leave for a meal if they did not have the time or want to, except for the third floor, which was primarily a dining hall. There was a fine dining restaurant for when business partners or prospective business partners came for a business lunch or dinner, they would be entertained. The floor itself not only has a fine dining restaurant, but there is also a Sports Bar with live entertainment and Karaoke nights that I had set up for the younger employees to hang out after a hard day’s work. This seemed to go over well with many of the employees as the public was also allowed to come through with a cover charge. It was considered a very exclusive place for nightlife entertainment and the bouncers were very cautious about who walked in. The other floors in the building were busy with the various levels of need, not only for the company but the employees as well. For example, there’s a child care and learning center, an urgent care medical center for working parents and employees, the mail room has a floor all to itself and the other floors have various offices for the varying needs to keep the company moving smoothly. The elevator door opened and I stepped out onto the executive floor. The receptionist greeted me with a smile and said good morning while she tended to the calls coming into the floor for everyone working on it. I turned left and made my way down the long corridor to my office, where I stopped in front of Margie. She handed me a message and nodded with a smile. I smiled back and nodded as I left her still on the phone with someone. Now Margie has been working for me for a long time. She actually worked for my father towards the end of his time until he retired, leaving the company in my hands. She’s a rather slender woman in her late to mid fifties, an average height with salt-n-pepper shorter length, slightly curly hair. Looking at her, one could tell she was rather athletic but not one of those nuts who go on marathons monthly. Her complexion has a natural light tan to it, so it makes her light brown eyes shine constantly, which actually matches her friendly yet motherly personality. Walking into my office, I looked out the large window to see the mountains off in the distance. It was very peaceful looking at the view and made me feel calm. I set my briefcase down next to my cherry oak desk while sitting down in my chair to return messages left for me. “Hey... hey... hey Xander! Where ya been pal?” a cheerful yet annoying at times voice said as my best friend Johnathon walked through my office door with the biggest smug look on his face. “What’s up John?” smirking back at him as he sat down in the chair across my desk. “Man, if I knew you were going to blow me off last night and then not come in until almost ten this morning, I wouldn’t have asked you to go out last night to the club.” emphasizing the word now while laughing. “I’m sure you wouldn’t have John.” now leaning back in my chair, chuckling back at his roguish ways. “But then again John… you do like the nightlife with all the ladies to yourself!” drawing out the word all for dramatic effect while smirking at him. “What happened man… Did you get lucky with a little hottie beforehand and lose your way?” now snorting his chuckles as his eyes gleamed over with the thought of a gorgeous beauty wearing a very short, very tight little dress… if that’s what it could have been called. Chuckling at his response and my memory of last night hitting Jane Doe with my car as I was going to meet him, I leaned forward with my elbows on the desk, hands folded together, moving downward. “Let me tell ya John, I wish that was the case by far.” eyes now glazing over remembering hitting someone with my car. “Then what happened to you Xan? I was almost worried. Almost!” crossing his arms over his chest as he sat back in the chair. Then, not giving me time to answer, he continued with... “There’s a live band downstairs tonight, wanna go check it out after work?” moving his right leg so it can rest on his left knee. “Sure. Let me get this done first and I’ll get back with you later. Want to grab something for lunch at the cafe’ or leave the building today?” now leaning back again in my chair. “Doesn’t matter to me, man. Just let me know when I stop back by though, OK?” he said while getting up and started for the door. “Sure thing John.” shaking my head while chuckling to myself, I said “see you later man.” “See ya!” was the last thing he said as he waved at me from behind and walked out the door. Moments later, I heard a knock at the door and, before I could answer, Margie said, “Excuse me, Mr. Mathers? I have some news on Jane Doe.”
