The Call
Caelynn let her cellphone fall to the floor. She heard the dull thump as it hit the carpet in her bedroom, she heard Cillian on the other end of the call faintly repeating her name. She sank to the floor, with her back sliding against the wall. Caelynn hugged her knees to her chest and she let the tears roll down her cheeks, the droplets wetting her jeans, a sob tore through her. Her twin is dead, gone forever. She had not seen him in years, not ever since she ran away from home after discovering that her father was the head of the Irish Mafia family. She recalled that night in vivid detail. A man had followed her from a nightclub down a dark alleyway that she had ducked into when she had realized that she was being followed. Her heart thumped in her chest as she hurried away, and the man had caught up with her. He was dressed in a gray hoodie, blue jeans and white sneakers. She could never forget, even if she tried, the nightmares still haunted her even 10 years later. He would always catch up with her, grabbing her by the hair and yanking her down into the filthy alleyway ground everything around her reeking of urine. He then proceeded to grab at her clothes, tearing her dress, exposing her breasts. He bit one hard while fumbling with his jeans. She screamed and screamed. Before he could enter her he was yanked off her by a big blonde guy who took off his shirt and shoved it at her without looking at her and gruffly told her to get dressed. She had shakily pulled his shirt over her head, stumbling to her feet on shaky legs. She had followed him when he had beckoned her to come along. The guy who had assaulted her was unconscious and being carried away toward a black SUV. She looked for a way to get away, to run, but she was also too shell shocked to get her body to work with her, so she followed the hulking blonde man to the vehicle. He opened the front passenger door for her and helped her into the vehicle. He didn't speak to her at all except for when he told her to put on his shirt. He went around to the back of the SUV and put on another shirt and got into the driver's seat. Everything felt so surreal, and she thought that she was imagining all of it due to disassociation from the attack that she had just gone through. The blonde guy started driving, everything around her seemed so familiar, but in her dazed state she did not quite grasp that they were busy taking her home. When they stopped in front of her house, she just sat in the car and the hulking blonde guy came around and opened the door for her to get out again. She looked at him confused. "Your brother is inside, miss Kavanagh" his voice had snapped her out of it. She got out of the vehicle and practically ran into the house. The other two men unloaded her attacker and carried him inside the house behind her and the hulking blonde guy. The hulking blonde guy led her into the basement where her brother was sitting in a large lounge chair by a fireplace, a tumbler in his hand. She had never been allowed into the "man cave". Her brother had only been allowed to go to the "man cave" when they turned sixteen. It was a very luxurious room fitted with a large TV and seating area, a pool table, a fireplace with two lounge chairs, a fully stocked bar and then there were doors leading to other rooms. The other two men with them had carried her attacker into one of the adjoining rooms, and she heard a loud thump, presumably as they had put him down before they exited the room and closed the door. Caelynn came out of her stupor and turned to her brother. She asked him what the meaning of this was, and he explained to her that their father was the head of a very powerful family and that he was second in charge and would one day take over and that they had a protection detail on them since the day they were born, that their father wanted to protect her from knowing any details of his true business because he loved the way his little girl looked at him as if he were superman. Aidan went on to tell her what he was never supposed to tell her. Aidan then told her that she had two choices, she could stay could stay and watch what they do to this monster, her monster, or she could leave, but she could rest assured that he would never dare lay another finger on another woman. She was stung by the betrayal of the secrets he had been keeping but had told her brother that she wanted to stay. The room they had left her attacker in was small, suffocatingly dark and dingy. The only light came from a single flickering bulb hanging overhead. The stench of blood and sweat hung heavy in the air, creating a sickening atmosphere. In the center of the room stood the hulking blonde man, shirtless again, tall and muscular, his face contorted in rage. He had left the great room earlier while Aidan talked to Caelynn. The attacker, an unknown man to her, sat tied to a chair in front of him, his face swollen and bruised from the hulking blonde guy's relentless beatings. He paced back and forth in front of him like a caged animal, his eyes burning with hatred. "You thought you could just do whatever you wanted, didn't you?" he spat, his voice dripping with venom. "You thought you were untouchable because of your affiliations. But you were wrong. You messed with the wrong family." Her attacker sneered, being arrogant even in this dire situation. "The Don will have his men find and kill you, maybe even f*ck you like I did your wh*re," he taunted. Aidan looked at him coolly and nodded at the hulking blonde guy. "You see Cillian over there is not a happy man, he is enraged that you separated him from his ward and even got as far as you did. Since I am feeling really generous, I will not kill you." "You're making a mistake, boy" the man spat at Aidan. Her brother's face twisted into a sadistic grin. "Oh, I'm not planning on killing you," he said, pulling out a knife from his pocket and handing it to Cillian. "I want you to suffer like my sister did. I want you to feel every bit of pain and fear that she felt." With that, Cillian plunged the knife into her attacker's thigh, causing him to scream in agony. Her brother leaned in close, his voice low and menacing. "You see, I've been studying up on your methods. I know all about your torture techniques. And I plan on using them all on you. You wanted to send my father a message because he was refusing to deal with you. You will be a message to everyone else that even thinks of touching my sister to get to the family" Caelynn saw the fear in the monster's eyes, and she vomited in the corner. Cillian looked at her sympathetically and motioned with his head toward the door, a small motion meant only for her, it had been as if he was silently pleading with her to leave. Instead, she stood her ground and watched as he proceeded to methodically torture her attacker, using every method he could think of. He broke his fingers and toes, and even used a hammer to break his kneecaps. Her attacker's screams echoed throughout the room, but Cillian showed no mercy, fueled by her pain and his own thirst for revenge. After what seemed like an eternity, her attacker was a bloody and broken mess, barely clinging to life. Her brother stood over him, a look of satisfaction on his face. "Cillian did a great job. This is for my sister," he said, before delivering the final blow with the knife that Cillian had handed back to him, plunging it into her attacker's heart. The room was silent, except for Cillian's heavy breathing. She looked down at the lifeless body of her attacker, a sense of relief and closure washing over her. She knew that this act of revenge would haunt her for the rest of her life and it left a pit in her stomach but she knew that she couldn't stay there any longer, she knew she couldn't stay in her life any longer. So she left after that, changed her identity after withdrawing all the cash she had and maxing out all the cards. She was sure that Cillian had followed her, but he never showed himself to her or tried to take her back. She picked up her phone laying on the floor and whispered in a broken voice "How?"
