After her declaration, almost as shaky and fast as his own, Laura let her breath out in a whoosh. Connor grinned.
“Let me guess. You have a shiny new degree in economics. It was all kinds of fun to study, but once you started thinking about what you’d actually do with that degree, all the fun went away.”
“Got it in one,” she said. “I loved learning the theory, the way all the systems fit together and feed off each other for better and for worse. The ways economies rise or fall, sometimes for reasons that would be totally irrational unless you consider that humans are involved. But the idea of doing the work, especially for government or big cities. Or even teaching. The research, the meetings, having your findings ignored over and over again.
