CHAPTER FOUR Paradise Lost Just as dawn was making a new day, and a bolt of sunlight burst between a forest of trees, the gardener’s truck pulled into the yard of the Madame Duvalier’s country home. One could get lost in the quiet, in the shades of pink and coral and warm cream that colored the stucco façade. Lost in reverie, turning back time, the mind could drift, steal into the sultry illusion of this loveliness, thinking Madame’s world a paradise. A colonnade extended across the front of the stately house. There was a balcony above and on either side of the portico a majestic oak soared gracefully skyward.
