CHAPTER TWO Escape For three weeks, the city was peaceful and Madame Duvalier’s houseguests were clueless of the activities that kept their lives safe from harm. With a rude banging at the door in the middle of the night, however, Isobel and Katarina’s thoughts were easily reminded of the night when their father first brought them to Madame Duvalier’s house. They jolted from bed, the commotion incredibly loud, thundering all the way to their third floor rooms. The girls were up and on the stairs, inching downward, peering suspiciously, as they listened to the sounds of Madame Duvalier arguing with a man in the foyer. Perhaps she didn’t realize how much sound carried in the house. “I will not be driven out,” she shouted. “You have no choice!” the man shot back emphatically. They seem
