My New Quarters And Bed Eventually Lady Arlen returned and upon being released, she and Bertram took me between them, each holding onto one of my chained arms above the elbow, then frog-marched me down one of the back hallways of the Great House to an innocuous door. I was surprised by this trip along the hitherto unknown passage, but then I’d never been permitted to wander freely about the house, particularly its ‘working’ areas. Bertram spent a moment unlocking the thick door and I was drawn through it onto a small landing at the top of a steep flight of steel stairs leading to the cellars.
