She heard muffled sounds outside her bedroom door and sat up, trying to remember if she had actually fallen asleep or not. It was before dawn. The chickens weren’t even ready to awaken the world with their clucking. Hannah hadn’t bothered to undress the night before, so she stepped out of bed, straightened her blouse, and tiptoed to the door. She couldn’t decide if she should wait for Mr. Kim to summon her or just go out there, so she paused at the threshold, waiting in the dark.
