The month Ember was gone sailed by without much notice. We were busy dealing with problems that had arisen with a small coven of witches. There were about 6 of them. They had been casted out of their coven due to the practice of black magic. They were murdering life stock and had even made an attempt on a human’s life. They were calling much too much attention to the supernatural world.
Some humans knew of us, but not all of them needed to know. As much as some thought it would help us be on top of the world, on the contrary, we would end up with a target on our backs. Our children wouldn’t be safe, nor would our homes.
It wasn’t unusual for small problems to arrive. Peace isn’t forever. People have their own hidden agendas and secret desires that cause mass havoc for those around them. Too greedy and selfish with their own wants.
We had been tracking them for the last two weeks. They had killed one of our scouts in an attempt to gain entrance to our kingdom. Had they asked for an audience, we may have obliged, but since they just stormed the grounds without rhyme or reason why, we took it as a threat.
Sleep was evading us as we each watched for any sign they were going to strike us. We had been in wolf form mostly, but would occasionally shift. Our bodies weren’t used to being in form for so long and it made our wolves cranky. They wanted to flutter about with some fighting. Not all business.
My wolf had about enough of me a week ago. We were missing the luxuries of our homes. The river waters were cold and didn’t provide our bodies with the proper nourishment. I was getting tired of eating deer and antelope. We love our meat, but we also need the sides to it.
Along our journey, we spoke to many trying to figure out where they may be hiding. The last coven we had crossed pointed us in this direction. Last they heard, they were causing problems with humans.
Shifting, we grabbed our clothing and prepared to enter the human town. Walking along the road, we kept our eyes and ears open. Anything could happen. If they are here, they won’t be fighting fair.
Humans were walking all around us. Their eyes were watching us closely. We were extraordinary and had a beauty they coveted. It was very normal for them to stare and watch us. Several of the female humans would walk by giggling if any of us made eye contact. It was silly, but then again, we never fully understood humans.
Moving around a corner, I felt my hair stand up on end.
“GET DOWN!” I commanded.
We all ducked behind objects and got low. A red ball of energy flew past us and hit a dumpster. Melting the side of it as if it was made of plastic. Dripping from the edges. Several garbage bags fell to the ground in the absence of the wall.
They looked around without making themselves too vulnerable. Careful to watch for another power ball. Moving low to the ground and being hidden, they moved towards the origin. They could hear women cackling about the hole in the dumpster.
Moving in, we could hear all 6 of them. They were in an older looking building; it may have been abandoned. They were steadily working away around a circular table. There were bottles, bones, animal organs, and herbs placed all around them.
An older looking woman had her face set in a hard line. She was fully engrossed in what they were doing.
“Would you all shut up!” She yelled. The cackling died down to an uncomfortable silence. We were nearing the entrance to the building. The door looked as though it would fall with a slight breeze.
Whatever they were up to was not good, they needed to stop before they succeeded in what they were doing.
I mind linking with the men around me and letting them know the plan. We are going to go through the front door. Another group is going to go through the back door. I cautioned them they would use magic against us.
Hitting the door, it moved without problems. Our weight is a force it cannot hold back. The screams of the witches could be heard as the other group moved in from the back door. The sounds of things being smashed, growls of wolves, and the screams of the witches could be heard all throughout the house.
Moving in on their location, we found the table had been turned over, destroying whatever they had been working on. Strong pungent smells of blood and death filled the air. Most of the witches weren’t a match for the werewolves and Lycans. The older witches were holding their own for the most part. They were visibly worn down. Their magic extracts a toll on the user. They had obviously been using a great deal of black magic.
I moved towards the leader. She was busy fighting my men, so wasn’t paying as close attention as she should have been. Lunging at her, I restrained her arms to keep her from using any magic against me or my men. One of the guys shoved something into her mouth to stop her from saying spells that could harm us.
The woman’s eyes were fiery red. They were ablaze with hatred and anger. Her skin was an unusual color now that I was up close to her. Her eyes spoke of centuries, but her body in human years looked to be no more than 50.
Witches are much like dragons. They can live centuries without old age taking them. Usually, they die from other causes. Most often it is internal disputes. Witches can be very contentious creatures. We regularly hear about disagreements that end in one of both witches dying. One always claims it is more powerful than the other.
She was fighting against me, but my body is built like a brick house. She isn’t getting away easily. Looking around us, I see the last witch in her group being slain. It was always sad and hard to watch, but I know they have no respect for life. In our world, that leads to only one path; death.
My men restrained the witch. I had agreed to take her back to her coven to face the trail. Without this promise, I would have killed her on the spot. We had been given a bracelet that would stop all of her powers from working. She was fighting the men holding her, but wasn’t having much success.
As we were working to get the bracelet onto her hand, she slammed her hand against my chest. Her eyes began to glow. I could feel something inside of me. At first it didn’t hurt, but then it was like she was ripping my insides out. I fought to remove her hand from my chest to stop the pain.
The next second, I watched as the light left her eyes. One of the warriors holding her hand plunged his hand into her chest. Ripping her grey heart from her body. Her body quickly slumped over.
An uneasy feeling settled over me.
“Burn this place down.” I felt the need to get out of there as fast as possible.
The men grabbed a clear liquid we have that is undetectable to human machines. Pouring it all over the house, they lit several matches to get the fire going. It didn’t take long for the building to be engulfed. The liquid we poured all over the place would completely destroy any magical beings. This would keep humans from asking questions if a body was to be found.
Finally, free of their reign of terror, we headed home. I missed being home. It’s fun traveling, but we haven’t really gotten to do any sightseeing. Just completing our mission.
The leader of their coven is going to be pissed, but at least she won’t be a threat anymore. That’s what really counts. One of my guys took the pendant off her neck before she burned up. We are keeping it in a magic sealed box to provide proof to the coven leader that she was destroyed.
Ember will be here in two days, all the more reason to hurry up and get home. During our time apart, I struggled some with my beast, but in keeping busy I was able to avoid it affecting me too much.
I came up with a plan with my parents. It would be a lot of us going back and forth to each other’s kingdoms, but this way, both of our people would get to know us as mates. I am anticipating it will be a while before we finally live under one roof. If Ember accepts me at all.
