Eliza
As I walk through the forest, I notice that Brandon hasn't gotten that far. He is whining in the forest in his huge, brown wolf form and I smirk.
"What is the matter? Is the moon too bright for you or something? Did you perhaps step on a rock?"
Brandon growls at me, and I realize he is standing on three legs instead of four. His right front paw is bent toward his body and blood is dripping down on the ground.
"Are you serious?" I ask in disbelief. "You actually stepped on a rock?"
The large wolf won't look at me, yet I get the feeling it's pouting and I snort.
"Let me help you."
Those words catch Brandon's attention. He glares down at me, but I'm not easily scared. Do I hate the guy? Yes. But I'm still high on the adrenaline from having met a dragon.
"Show me your paw," I squat down and grab his large paw—one hand at the front and one on the bloody paw pad. Brandon snarls, but I hush him. "Quiet. Can't you see I'm trying to help you? I might not be able to transform into a wolf yet, but I've learned how to use healing magic."
Brandon stops whining and instead allows me to work my magic. I concentrate on getting rid of the pain in Brandon's body and healing the wound. Unlike the human body, healing wolves with magic is not as complicated. It's all about finding the source of the pain, for example, and then banishing it.
"I can't believe I'm doing this for you," I say through gritted teeth as I run my hand down his paw. The flesh starts moving back into place. Brandon groans in pain, but doesn't move away. The wound disappears, and the paw stops oozing blood. "There, all better."
Brandon bares his teeth at me while I step away from him. Since the one didn't break, it didn't take long to heal him. I let go of his paw, and he immediately steps away. There is a sound of him transforming, and soon, my "favorite" bully is glaring into the woods.
"I would have been fine."
"Oh, really?" I cross my arms over my chest. "The way you were whining, it sounded like you were dying."
Cold eyes move over my face, but in the end, Brandon doesn't argue with me. He just stands there with his big, strong body and frowns. He looks conflicted.
"What is it?" I ask.
Brandon fixes me with a hostile smile."Don't think that we are friends just because you healed my paw."
"Really?" I can't believe this guy. His words and tone makes me want to hit him. Challenge him. "Not only did I save you from a dragon—I also healed your paw. You should agree to stop the bullying."
He snorts. "You have a good night of sleep tonight, just know that things will return to normal tomorrow."
“You’re a f*****g coward, Brandon. The only way you can feel like a man is to pick on me, and I can't for the life of me figure out what I've done to you." I narrow my eyes at him, my fists tightened into balls at my sides as Brandon continues to stare down at me with amused eyes.
“Are you still talking?” He asks, and snorts. “Go home, Eliza. Before I change my mind about a truce."
"I can't believe you..." I growl before storming off in the direction of my house. How could I think saving Brandon's life would change who he is even for a second? The dude is a d**k, and frustratingly stupid.
Why is he so set on being my enemy?
Tears prickle behind my eyes, but I fight them. I won't cry here. No, not me. I will make it home, and rest up for tomorrow and forget Brandon exists.

The next day I'm half-dead even before I've made it to school. I'm seventeen and it's really called secondary school, but I call it school because why not?
Either way, I'm in a social studies class. It's with our class mentor, and I quietly make it to the back of the auditorium. Our mentor is already standing at the front, smiling like a fool. I believe there is a new student and she seems eager to introduce them.
"Alright, everyone," she claps her hands together, right underneath the microphone but still close enough to make us wince. It's her thing. Mrs. Dahlee is an overeager teacher. "As you may know, we have a new student that will be attending our classes, and we are so lucky because the new student is one of the Alpha kings! Can you believe it? He has decided to study at OUR school and take MY classes!"
There are actual tears running down Mrs. Dahlee's face now. "And it's the dragon Alpha—the most fearsome and strongest Alpha. He has come all the way from the underwater country of Atlantis to live here in the city of Pagos! He is peaceful and has promised not to hurt any werewolves unless you threaten him! "
Dragon Alpha?
I wonder if that dragon in the lake could be this dragon Alpha. If that is the case, I already met him, but that might be a stretch? Why would an Alpha king save me?
The other people in the room are gossiping, and I might be able to get clues from them. The clan of werewolf girls sitting in front of me seems to have a lot of information...
"I heard the dragon Alpha king is SO gorgeous, like, you wouldn't even believe."
"Aren't all Alpha kings good-looking, though?"
"Yes, but especially him. Total husband material and big d**k energy."
I raise an eyebrow at the girls. One of them is puffing up her hair in her phone, her eyes glued to the selfie screen as she smiles at herself in vanity.
"What is his name?" I ask.
The girl turns to me, her eyes sparkling. "The Alpha king is Kai Nian. He is supposedly the largest dragon in the world."
I raise my eyebrow. "Oh, is he?"
"Yes, rumor has it he is searching for his mate," she smiles at me, her eyes taking in my blonde hair hiding under my hood and my lack of makeup. "But don't worry, Eliza. He won't be interested in you—you're too much of a tomboy."
"An ugly one at that," one of the other girls snickers, but the last one falls silent, Emma. Why? Because she used to be my friend and gets uncomfortable when the two other girls—whatever their names are—are mean to me.
"Yeah, I might not win any beauty pageant, but—"
"Eliza!" A new deep voice exclaims. It sounds incredibly happy, and the other girls turn pale. They are staring up at someone behind me, and I turn around, choking at the sight of a s*x god.
He is a male, obviously. His hair is kept short, giving him an edgy look that works in his favor, and my eyes do a double-sweep up and down his tall body. He is wearing completely ordinary clothes: washed-out jeans and a t-shirt that makes his chest muscles and biceps fight for space.
... is this really the dragon Alpha king?
He looks more like a model for sportswear or camping gear. He has a full beard, yet it doesn't hide his full pink lips, and even though he is packing on pounds of muscle, he has kind, orange eyes. It's strange because I thought guys with tattoos were usually tough. This one has his left sleeve filled with them, but his face is gentle.
I continue to gawk at him, and a knowing smirk touches his lips, but he doesn't say anything. Instead, the teacher speaks. Actually, she might have been speaking this entire time, but I completely ignored the introduction. I was busy talking to the pack of hyenas... I mean girls.
"Kai, you may take a seat anywhere you would like," Mrs. Dahlee says.
Kai doesn't even turn around to acknowledge our teacher. His attention is on the girls that are gaping at him. He gives them his most friendly smile, and I inwardly roll my eyes.
Of course he is drawn to the popular mean—
"Move down a couple of seats," Kay says, his voice ice-cold and what you would expect of an Alpha. The girls immediately wince and do what he says.
Scary.
"Am I?" He asks.
"Huh?" What is he talking about?
He seems to stifle a laugh. "Scary?"
"Oh..." I squirm in my seat, unsure what to say or what to do with my clammy hands. I place them in my lap. "A little bit?"
The only answer I get is a chuckle, and without waiting for an invitation, Kai easily flops down in the chair beside mine, and I have to press myself to the corner because he is man-spreading. Not on purpose, but the dude has some incredibly thick thighs.
"You like them?"
I blink repeatedly. "Excuse me?"
Kai motions at his legs. "I've been trying not to skip leg day at the gym, and it's paying off. At first, it was strange using legs, but I'm used to it now," he grins at me. "The admiration in your eyes is very rewarding."
I'm taken aback by his confusing words. What does he mean by "it was strange using legs," and also, how did he know I was admiring his thighs? I didn't say anything, did I?
"No offense or anything, but I'm pretty sure I didn't compliment your legs."
Kai looks surprised, but then his lips curve up in amusement. I raise an eyebrow at him, and he smirks. "No, but you thought about it, didn't you?"
It finally dawns on me. "Are you a mind reader?"
"Yup."
Oh dear, this will be troublesome. A series of shivers run down my spine. I'm uncomfortable as heck. I have no idea why this gorgeous guy is sitting beside me and smirking as if he knows a secret that I have yet to hear about.
Also, can he read every single thought inside my head?
Probably.
I avert my gaze from him and try to empty my mind, but instead, my eyes land on Brandon. He is sitting a few seats away and... glaring at Kai? If I didn't know any better, I would say that he looks pissed off.
"He is jealous," Kai snorts. "Watch this."
He casually puts an arm around my waist, pulling me toward his muscular body. Brandon gasps in response. He looks shocked, and I turn a deep shade of red—not because of Brandon, but because Kai smells like aftershave, and my nose is making out with his pectoral muscle.
"I think this will be an interesting year," Kai says and pats me on the back. There is a smirk on his face as he peers down at me, but his attention quickly moves to Brandon. "There is definitely not a lack of competition, but I expected as much."
I squint my eyes at him. "Are you high or something?" What is he even talking about?
He snorts in amusement. "Nope."
The hand around me disappears, and as weird as it sounds, I sort of miss the warmth it provided me with. I mean, hot dude holding me? Yes, please.
Though, since I'm sure Kai can read my mind, I pretend that I'm unbothered. I focus on our teacher, aware of Kai eyeing me with a look of amusement. His lower face is hiding in the palm of his hand and he is leaning forward without paying any attention to Mrs. Dahlee.
It unsettles me. I'm not used to people looking at me, especially not guys, and I awkwardly pull my hood higher over my head. Hoping Kai will look away.
And he does, but not without smirking about it. I don't know why Kai is so interested in me and his proximity makes it hard for me to focus in class. I'm a blushing mess.
To make matters worse, Mrs. Dahlee smiles at me after the first class ends and says, "Ah! Eliza, why don't you show Kai around? He could use someone responsible like you to show him where everything is!"
Great.
I pick up my bag from the floor, and then I look up at Kai, who towers above me. He is wearing that same trademark smirk from before and says. "Take good care of me, yeah?"
