Chapter 11 It was a lively meal. The young ladies were so preoccupied with the handsome Phillip Kendall that they barely noticed Cullom’s absence. Questions about their guest’s background, profession, business in town, and especially his female companion from the tea room occupied most of the conversation. As I was curious about a great many of these things myself, I didn’t bother to admonish their unladylike curiosity. Instead, I sat back and enjoyed the show. Kendall was unflustered by the barrage and perfectly at his ease, an amused smile tugging at his lips. I knew from personal experience that he was a consummate liar.
