A feeling of horror came over her, so intense that it almost turned her faint and then she saw that it was not Rex’s car that was waiting there but another, an unknown vehicle.
The relief was as sudden as the shock.
“I wonder who it is?” she said aloud, and then thought, ‘perhaps the doctor. Perhaps Elaine is dead at last.’
She was conscious that her hands were very cold and that her head was throbbing.
The car came to a standstill. Fenella wondered if she had the strength to get out and then someone came through the doorway and stood on the steps.
It was a man. She looked at him for a moment unseeingly and then she noticed his Naval uniform and gave a little cry – a cry of utter relief and joy.
“Raymond!” she exclaimed and, scrambling out of the car, started to run towards him.
