Chapter Six “What do you mean she’s not here?” Nic demanded. Lucas studied him, his hostile expression fading to neutral, he stepped back out of the doorway, giving Nic tacit permission to enter. “She didn’t think you’d be back. So she left.” Nic wanted to be mad about that, but he had thought he couldn’t come back. Inside the apartment, his gaze was caught by her ring, the ring he’d pushed onto her finger in Vegas, lying abandoned on a side table. And he felt real fear. He’d solved the problem of his mother, but had he damaged their marriage? He’d come here spoiling for a fight, he realized, hoping she’d make it easy for him to leave. She hadn’t.
