ENZO KING
After my call with Vince last night after work, I packed an overnight bag and drove off. It has been exactly six hours since I am on the road and I am sure that I will make it home in an hour or less. It even frustrates me because I am driving over the speed limit because my girl just won’t answer her phone, in fact, it has been off since last night. It is now 1 in the wee hours of the morning, and I am very tired not just from driving but from my work too. I am given a day off because I need to analyze a case study and prepare for court, but here I am doing what boyfriends do when their girlfriends are in some sort of situation.
Thirty minutes later, I am driving into my hood. The time is 1:48 AM and my first stop is at Nandi’s home. I try calling her phone, but it is still off.
I take a breath in and out and then call her mother’s phone. It rings for a while and then she answers in a sleepy voice.
“Enzo, hi. Why are you calling at this time; is there a problem?” She asks.
“Ma, I am so sorry to bother you at this time and worry you. I was trying to call Nandi, but her cell phone is off. I want to say that I am outside your house, I can just drive into the yard and I will sleep in the car. I just didn’t want you to be surprised in the morning when you find me in your yard,”
“Do not be silly, son. Just park your car inside the yard and I will open the door for you,” She said, hanging up.
I got off the car to open the gate and then went back to my car so that I can drive-in. After all that, I saw the front door light going on and the door opened. I got in and greeted Nandi’s mother.
“I am sorry for showing up at this time, Ma. I was worried about Nandi I had to drive down here to check on her. She turned her phone off,” I said and she looked puzzled.
“I didn’t know, son. Is there something that I should know? What made you come straight here instead of you going home? Do not get me wrong, but I am concerned by your worry. Please sit down. Are you hungry?”
“I am, but you don’t have to worry about me, Ma,” I sat down on the couch.
“Nandi wasn’t herself, but she said she was fine. When she came back home, she went straight to sleep. She woke up later from a dream and went to take a bath then went back to sleep without eating. I really don’t know what happened,”
I breathed out and concluded that Nandi did not tell her mother about the attack.
“Ma, Nandi was attacked from her spot yesterday. Luckily, my brother Vince was coming from work early and helped her. Vince then called me and told me everything and seeing Nandi’s phone off, I decided to drive down,”
“Oh, son. Nandi did not tell me anything,” Ma covered her mouth in distress.
“She probably did not want to worry you, Ma,”
“Still, son. I am her mother and I have every right to worry,”
“I am sorry,” I said and held her hands.
“Uhm, you can sleep with Nandi in her room,” She got up.
“Oh, no, Ma. I can just sleep here on the couch and just…”
“No. You will sleep comfortably on the bed with Nandi. Now go,” She said.

I was woken up by chewing sounds and the bright light coming through the lace curtain. I growled and stretched my arms and sat upon the bed. There was my girl, next to me, eating meat. She is not even giving me any attention.
“Good morning, babe,” I draped my arm around her shoulder and kissed her cheek.
“Hi,” She said, coldly.
“Since when are you a breakfast person and why are you eating meat so early?” She looked at me then back at her meat and shrugged. “We have to talk about you turning your cell phone off the entire time. I told you about this before and I told you to stop it. Why won’t you listen?” I asked, firmly, and seeing that she is ignoring me, I grabbed the bowl of meat from her. “I am talking, young lady,” I said and I got her attention this time. She frowned.
“Why did you tell Ma about the attack? Why did Vince even tell you; what are you even doing here?” She scoffed.
“If you had your damn phone switched on, I wouldn’t have had to sacrifice my day off to study and drive all the way here. Did that bastard hurt you?” I inspected her face.
“Can I get my bowl back, Enzo?”
“Answer me!” I raise my voice. She tries taking the bowl but she flinches and squeals like someone in pain. She holds her shoulder and grins.
“Baby, what is wrong with your arm? He hurt you, didn’t he? I will mess him up when I find him. Get up and get ready; we are going to the doctor,”
“Baby, I am fine. It’s not much pain,” She says.
“I don’t care. We are still going to the doctor, come on,” I ordered.
“Okay, babe. But can I first please finish eating my meat?” She pouted. How can I say no to that cute face?
“Fine but kiss me on the lips first. I miss you so much, I don’t understand why you are mad at me,”
“I am mad because you are here and I miss you so much, but you will be leaving me again. Baby, I miss you, can you hear me?” She sadly says and I wrap my arms around her, hugging her tight but careful enough not to hurt her arm.
She ate her meat and when she was done, we then went to take a shower together. I was so tempted to have s*x with her, but I respect her mother’s presence in the house. Although I got hard, I held myself until we were in our clothes.
“Your breakfast is ready,” Nandi says, finding me busy on my phone, going through my emails.
“Thanks, babe. I will be right there now. I just need to respond quickly to my boss’s email and I will be with you now,”
My boss is a very needy person he even irritates me. It has been only two weeks, yet I am enough of him. I cannot wait to open my firm and be my own boss, but for now. I will work on getting experience and learn how firms are run and maybe win a few court cases so that people can trust me and my work.
“Done!” I said after sending my reply to Mr. Roberts’ email and then went to join Nandi and Ma in the dining room. I was shocked to find Nandi eating more meat.
“Nandi, are you okay?” I asked.
“Yeah, why?”
“Baby… never mind,” Nandi can be too sensitive sometimes and any little thing might turn out big to her. “Morning, Ma,”
“Hello, son. Did you have a good sleep?”
“Yes, thank you. Again, I am sorry for bothering you in your sleep,”
“It was not a problem, Enzo. You are always welcome here, no matter the time,”
After breakfast, Nandi and I drove to the hospital, and luckily, we didn’t wait long to get help from a doctor. We went to his office right away.
“Nandi is swollen internally. I will prescribe a cream for her to rub every night before she goes to sleep and some analgesic to take at least twice a day. Please wait here and I will go and jot it down and sign it for you,” The doctor said and went off.
“This was really unnecessary,” Nandi complains.
“I don’t want to take any chances. I am glad that we are here,” I held her hand and kissed the back of it.
“I am glad that you came here for me. I love you, baby,”
“I love you more,”
“I am craving Ice cream and Hershey’s flavored with cookies 'n' creme. Can we please get them?”
What is wrong with Nandi? Why does she eat a lot today? Maybe it’s because she didn’t eat the whole day yesterday.
“Anything for you, my love,”
The doctor came back with our prescription, and we went to the pharmacy to get the prescription before we left.

“I’ll have Hershey’s and Vanilla ice cream, please,” I said to the lady who looks like she is flirting with me.
“Why don’t you try out our new ice cream flavor? It tastes good, like the way you look,” I chortled, shaking my head.
“I don’t think it will taste as good as I look and my wife won’t like it. Can I get my order, please?”
“Oh, so you married. But I don’t see any ring on your finger?”
“So, you’ve been checking me out?”
“Why not? You are a whole snack to me,” I let out a short laugh, getting annoyed.
“I am glad I am just a snack to you because my wife sees a whole meal here. And whether I have a ring on or not, I don’t see where you still fit in. Are you giving me my order or do I have to do it myself?”
“Baby, what is taking you long? I told you that I have work to get done for that lady I was telling you about. Her order should be done by tomorrow,” Nandi walks into the store.
“Come here, baby. Come and hear what this lady is telling me. She says I am a snack, can you believe that?” Nandi laughed.
“You say what? Nah, you are a whole full meal, baby,” Nandi plays along. Now we are making a fool of the lady in her store.
“That’s what I told her, baby. I think she has a crush on me,”
“Oh no, you don’t say. Someone has a crush on you. That’s crazy! I say give the woman a chance. This is your moment to shine!”
“Uhm, here’s your order. Can you please leave my shop,” The lady snaps.
“Woah!” Nandi jumps, holding her head like a mad person. “She owns the shop too. Baby, take her… She is miss independent,”
I laughed, taking the ice cream tub and the Hershey’s before we exited the shop, laughing at the lady’s face. I didn’t know that Nandi could be this crazy.
I opened the door for her to get in the car and then I went to my side and started the car before driving.
“Baby you should go and see your parents. You can’t travel all the way only for me,” She said, eating Hershey’s.
“But that was my only reason to come here; you, baby,” I said, looking ahead of the road.
“Yeah, but you can’t leave without seeing them,”
“Okay, ma’am. They are at work now; I will go home later when they get back before I leave,” I said, and she kept quiet. “Babe, you see you are doing it again,”
“I’m sorry. I was so comfortable having you here with me and now you must go. I just can’t get used to you being far away from me,”
I sighed and took her hand into mine and quietly drove until we arrive home.
Ma was sleeping in her room when we got into the house, and I remembered I decided to use the little time I have before I leave to go through the case study and prepare for court tomorrow. My parents come back at 4 PM from work, so I will spend an hour with them and then drive back to Joburg at 5. I will probably arrive there at around 11 PM if I drive a little faster or I will get there at 1 AM like I did when I came here.
“Babe, I am going to scoop some ice cream for you,” Nandi says, getting out of the bedroom.
“No thanks, baby. But I will have some from your bowl. Just please get my laptop bag from the car so that I can push some work while you get busy on your work,”
“Okay,”
——————————————————————————
It’s that time for me to leave and I am even scared to tell Nandi that I am leaving. But first, I am going to my parents’ house and then I am shooting straight to Joburg-The City of Gold. No, I am not making up the name. Johannesburg is called eGoli and it means Gold. It is based in the province called Gauteng, which also means ‘place of gold’ in South Africa. Just google and you will see that I am not lying. I won’t lie, that is a place to be; that is a place where dreams do come true. It is very nice there, but I will have to adjust to the lifestyle there.
I heard Nandi gagging, forcing my attention on her. I shut down my laptop and closed it.
“Are you okay, baby?” I asked.
“I think I…” She now chokes and drops all the beads on the bed, covering her mouth with her hand.
“Nandi, do you need to vomit?” I ask, panicking.
She gags once more and this time, I scoop her up and run with her to the bathroom and open the toilet seat for her after I got her on her knees. She immediately vomited in the toilet bowl and I held her hair back.
“Baby, you need to stop eating the way you were doing today. Look at the results now,” I scold, lifting her.
“I don’t know what is happening with me. I have had an eating disorder ever since you left me and I can’t control it,” She cries.
“It’s okay. You will be fine, baby. Wash your mouth while I make some chamomile tea for you, okay,” I kissed her forehead and went to the kitchen. I made the chamomile tea for her, and her mother and I found them in the living room.
“Here is your tea, baby. Drink while it is still hot,” I gave Nandi and her mother their teas.
“You are so sweet, son, thank you,” I smiled at Ma.
“How are you feeling right now?” I asked Nandi.
“I am a little tired, I just want to sleep,” She said, lying down on the couch.
A part of me sees an opportunity to let her sleep so that I can leave without her watching me leave because it is also said to leave her behind. I grab the fleece and cover her body. I lean to her face and leave a peck on her lips.
“I love you, Nandi,”
“I love you, Enzo,” She said after closing her eyes.
I will see you again soon, my love. Stay well.
